I think it's dead good: love the electro bassline, and the usual New Order style hooks. Bodes well for the new album.
Have just listened to the rest of the album though (on MTV site), and it's a load of s*&!e.
Yesterday I've got to listen to the track in full quality and I think it's pretty good... As some people have said "Bizarre Love Triangle" Light. But it's really hard to notice Barney's voice. Did he play guitars on the track? I don't understand the reason to invite someone for a collaboration if it doesn't show anything in the final thing.

Credibility. Bernard's a dance music legend, an inspiration to so many other artists, and maybe old Gwenda thought she needed a few big names on the credits to boost her own status in the eyes of the record-buying public. Let's face it, no fucker would have mentioned the new Gwen Stefani album on this site unless it had New Order involved with it, so her plan is already working, she's widened the potential audience and may even get a few record sales from the completists.....
Of course, New Order weren't adverse to dropping a few famous names around as soundbytes before Get Ready....

I doubt having New Order as a collaborator will increase sales in the US though... UK maybe, but US, let me doubt it.
I believe there is a real link though, we all know Gavin Rossdale loves the band (even if his cover of In A Lovely Place is not the best I heard), maybe Gwen does too for real...
However, the addition of Hooky is quite good... that bass is what attracks me in New Order's music, so it'll always work for me.
Well considering its Gwen's album that is pretty much gonna be all girlish-pop music I think the fact she allowed New Order the publicity of being on it was cool.
Maybe if she disguised her voice like Sumner's and covered New Order songs it would be better, but its her gig. New Order is probably glad to be a part of it.

Personally, I've been a semi-fan of Gwen and No Doubt, and NOs involvement in the album may make me buy the CD.

Well fook me with a used cappuccino stirring stick. Never thought I would ever hear anyone say that New Order were clinging to the coat-tails of someone else to get publicity.
having downloaded this album (cough!) I can safely say that I really like THE REAL THING, its unmistakably New Order, very Here To Stay meets the Republic era. Unmistakable Hooky bass after 15 seconds or so. So did they produce this as well? its very polished, but thats not necessarily a good thing for the new album, I like raw and edgy. Its a New Order song without Barney vocals, thats how I'd summerise it. Its one of 2 good songs on the album, What You Waiting For being the other one.
good too see Hooky keeping up the good work.

You should all go on MTV's website and vote for Real Thing as the best song... this might help the song to be released as a single, hence more publicity for New Order, and more help for the upcoming album!
I had a quick listen to all the tracks. I liked the 'real Thing' purely for Hooky's bass.
The track reminds me of the Technique days, though thankfully, Hooky's bass is more up front...
I'm not that keen on most things in the charts nowadays, but if this one is released as a single, it wouldn't be a bad thing. I agree with the comment that it sounds more like the Pet Shop Boys (therefore Electronic) but with Hooky adding some kind of musical relief!
Not a great track, but then, the Other Two weren't involved. You need all four to make a truly great sound...

Don't bother... The first thing they'll do is prepare a unique single remix with omits Hooky's bass.;)
Well, I've listened to the full album and I can say that, to my taste, The Real Thing isby far the best song on that album.
85% of the rest is hip-hop shit ! :barf:
It often sounds like a bad Madonna album. Man do I hate profoundly that hip-hop movement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 
As for the Slow Jam Mix of The Real Thing, included on the album as a bonus track, it's not a dance mix. It's just a smoother, alternate version, of the original mix (actually, it's 3:35). Almost accapella. Hooky's bass is totally absent on this one.
Finally, for those of you who hear Barney's voice on this song, you are out of your mind. There are no Bernard Sumner vocals on this track. Period.

I will take a pass on the cappuccino part but like it or not, NO will get more publicity from being on Gwen Stefani's album.

Yes and someone has said that the "Slow Jam Mix" was done by New Order but i really doesn't sound like anything related to New Order. Can someone check this information or was it just gossip?

Since it's titled Slow Jam, it sounded obvious that it COULD be them...
The bassline was great and the backing instrumentation wasn't bad, but I've never been fond of her voice. It's not as gratingly thin and phony as Britney Spears' or Hilary Duff's, but it's not my taste. I've never been a No Doubt fan, but, on this Christmas album, a Very Special Christmas 3, that my mother bought about 7 years ago, there was a No Doubt track on there, "Oi to the world" that my sister used to over play every year. It drove me nuts.
No, the Slow Jam Mix IS NOT by New Order.
Barney and Hooky only play guitar and bass parts on that track.

The "Slow Jam" mix is by Wendy and Lisa. Barney & Hooky's contributions are absent.
Do we know yet whether the lyrics are also contributed by Barney?
Some of the phrasing sounds just like him...
