i disagree, barney's voice isn't the best. Gillian has better voice, but Ian has a deep, energetic with angst voice that grabs my attention. Very Chilling

Ian's voice was too weird. I think it would have hindered the band if he did not off himself. Barney's vocals have matured quite well and are quite pleasant to listen to.

When I was younger my mum used to give me into trouble for listening Ian/JD, coz she thought it sounded like the devil...!?!

Ian was different, i like different. Plus Ian had troubles in his life leading up to his untimely death. Its what the music to jd is, depressing, a reflection to ians moods.

You cant really compare,Curtis was a great enigmatic frontman for JD,and Sumner is equally as good for NO,in a completely different way.

Ian and Barney, for separate reasons.. Ian was Joy Division's hurt soul, Barney started as an ill-equipped frontman, who eventually came into his own with his own style.

Gillian has a very underrated voice, nothing wonderful, but miles better than most "popular" singers today.

Peter Hook, well....stick with the bass playing, son.

It's gotta be Barny, curtis was good, but Barny has deffinately gained the edge over time, and the early live stuff was hillarious

Hooky isn't bad on some stuff, but it has to be in the right key, pottsy is just a barny sound alike, but in the time of need, when NO did nowt for years at least monaco provided us with Hooky's bass and a Barny soundalike, nearest thing to what i yearned for.

Roll on the new album and some gigs, hopefully in the north west, preferably salford, they're always best playing at home.

I've never liked Ian's voice. It fits on Transmission ans She's Lost Control, but on Isolation, it's horribly out of place. Maybe he was trying to sound isolated amidst the instrumentation, but I still find his voice really off key and out of the mix. Now, in the beginning of New Order, Barney's voice was pretty horrid, but over time, and over several key changes, his voice has become much better. Now, I know some don't like how he's been trying to sound like a pop star since True Faith, but I kind of like that.

I vote Sumner. He remains to this day one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Period.

Barney, especially around 84 when he was confident, aggressive and pissed.

Hooky rarely sings LOUD enough live. Example, that NOish song he did for Monaco. Mumbling in the mike.

I agree with Mike, once Barney got his confidence around 1984 he became the best. Prior to that he needed some work.

Was listening to the Wellington University gig New Zealand 1982 last night. On all the "new" songs (Leaver Me Alone, Your Silent Face) he sounds like crap. BUT he really belted out Denial, Chosen Time and did justice to In A Lonely Place. Familiarity and confidence plus Pernod.

when Barney took lead, he sound unconfident. Sounded like he needed to get da pussy . But comes Brotherhood, he felt confortable and sounded like a man, not someone twisting his balls.

You bet your ass I got Studio 54 7/784 gig! It always travels with me whenever I must leave Fortress Twist for a night or three.
