Anyone catch this?

I used to be a massive U2 fan, then they came out with some unbelievable shite in the early 90's, mainly that Zooropa malarkey and appearing on stages with Lemons.

But to be fair, they were fucking good last night, they came across well, and the version of I Will Follow was brilliant it made me realise why I liked them so much when I was younger.

I was reading something the other day though, apparently U2 appeared at the studio when Closer was being made, and they were somewhat awestruck by meeting Joy Division. So I can see where Hooky was coming from when he mentions U2 taking some of the Rock from Joy Division. To be fair, neworder (at least Barney) never wanted to become the next BIG thing, but whilst watching U2 last night, I couldn't help thinking that could've been neworder.

When Bono and co were talking about touring and playing LIVE, and how that was them "at home" I instantly thought of Hooky. That's all the Hookmeister wanted, and to be fair, that's basically what WE want as well. Obviously you can't always have yer cake and eat it, what neworder achieved will always be second to none. I also remember Bono mentioned the Order when they received one of their awards in Manchester a year or two back. I believe Hooky's quote was "Fuck the thank you's - we'd rather have their money"

Basically, I hope to buggery we get a good few gigs next year and the album's a cracker.

Have I mentioned that I would like to see Age Of Consent back on the set-list yet? :D

didnt the edge and bono actually go to see jd at a gig and thats what inspired them to get into a band?,plus the fact they still drop jd tunes into their live set from time to time or so ive been told in this very forum but i had many the same thoughts as you shugvs m8,"if only" seems to be the phrase bandied about where new order is concerned. if only ian had lived if only they had cracked america if only they wasnt so lazy if only theyd played the game

the list is endless.

that said im not complaining,theres a new album to look forward too and gigs as well no doubt,and when you consider that u2 are being patted on the back lately and people saying "well done lads nearly 25yrs and still at it" i think its a bloody miracale that weve still got new order to listen too when u consider how long they have been together. heres to the lads cracking america and becoming the worlds oldest boy band. :nod:

there's just something about U2 that makes want to puke. OK, they have written some good songs, but I will never be able to respect them the way I do New Order. For example can you imagine New Order singing HYMNS before going on stage?! U2 are known to do this. And one other thing, if it wasn't for the Sunday Blooday Sunday and other religious / political songs U2 would never have made in it the States and have had the success they have enjoyed. And one last thing, if that looney tune Brian Eno was to work with bands that did were rumoured to do drugs (ie New Order) and not bible thumpers then our Manc friends might have more fun tickets in the bank and would not need to resort such desperate measures as guesting with Gwen The Fanny and the likes...: smoking:

Bono is quite an entertainer... the U2 gig I've seen from the Elevation tour (they did 3 nights in Montréal damn it, nobody can beat that!) was quite good...

I can't see Barney playing with the crowd.. sorry ;)

But if you know yer history (shameless Celtic link) New Order were VERY close to doing an advert for Sunkist in the late 80's. Except Barney couldn't stop laughing whilst doing the lyrics and Hooky had to hold up a sign which read $200,000. In the end Rob vetoed the idea I think. The lyrics can actually be heard at the end of the BRAIN MIX from Blue Monday 95.

:nod: Which was the reason I nearly never started the thread. My missus is always moaning about my obsession with neworder, and no matter how much you try and explain that they SHOULD have been massive goes straight over her head. As I mentioned, you can't always get what you want, but sometimes you just wish you'd get more recognition for everything they achieved. They did it their way, they chose not to play the so-called game and hats off to them.

I have to admit to thinking about NO whilst watching the 'I will follow' performance. My missus only saw the Finsbury park dvd the other night and gave me stick about barney looking too old to be acting the way he was. I obviously shot her down, but could see what she was trying to say. I only watched a small part of u2's performance and it was actually pretty good, what I don't understand is how my missus now thinks that it's acceptable for U2 to keep going but not my beloved order. I haven't heard (and don't intend to) U2's new album, but someone said on a DR-thread that they heard some obvious JD-guitar rip-offs, and who asked bono to appear on 'new order story'? did he do it off his own back?

Tony Wilson almost definitely. Wilson has mentioned Bono a few times in interviews over the years. Another (probably) less likely possible would be Quincy Jones, who has had dealings with both groups as well.

I never really liked U2 - was always impressed with the catalogue number for Crass' 'Christ The Album'box set -'BOLLOX2U2'

And I LOVED the TOTP interview with New order and Steve and Barney's comments about U2 - 'That Bongo geezer...setting himself up as some sort of Jesus figure...Barney would trip over the flag...etc...'

That Oakenfold rehash of "Lemon" is one of my favourite records of all time. Reminds me of a mate's wedding in Goa nigh on 10 years ago, everyone blasting that one out on the beach. Halcyon days.

Only own one U2 record meself - Achtung Baby - and Mr Hibster quite rightly caned me for picking it up on ebay. Reminds me of an ex. 5ft11 Scottish bird. Nuff said.

Caught them on Jonathan Ross on Friday and like the Shuglet said, twas brave of 'em to play something like I Will Follow. Bit like New Order getting up there and banging out Ceremony. One for their 'ardcore I should imagine and good to see they've not forgotten their roots.

Yeah I've heard the Sunkist ad. But if you've seen the iPod commercial in question you'd see why it would be so un-New order like.

I do really like U2 but I'm not sure "as much" as New Order. Something about JD/NO seems sacred and above their peers, so much so even "Bonio" has admitted as much. My favourite U2 albums basically encompass all the later "experimental" stuff, I can't stand the chest-thumping anthems of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" etc. I much prefer the understated brilliance of "Your Blue Room" from the Passengers record, or "The Playboy Mansion" from Pop. But for some reason no-one seems to like Pop :scratch: I agree with Al Jarvis that the Perfecto reworking of Lemon is a great track, as are numerous other U2 remixes. "The Lady With The Spinning Head" and most of Achtung Baby is superb. They were taking a risk at least, and could have just remained a very bland rock outfit in order to perpetuate success but they didn't.

Even "All that you can't leave behind" was a great record, I listened to that to death for about a year on the bus to college. The new record sounds good but I thought Vertigo was a very bubblegum single I.e. fantastic for a short period of time but doesn't have long lasting appeal. In comparison, Beautiful Day is still a timeless track four years on IMO. I'm getting more and more into the new record though and will have a better opinion formed in a month or two no doubt.

About Bono, can't help agreeing with the guy who posted this on the Billy Mackenzie mail list - nice words about Rob:

And we seem to forget that New Order did record "Vietnam" for that Hope album "to help the child victims of the war in Iraq". I don't see any problem in having done that though.

Yeah Chris, much of the early Associates stuff was fantastic - just like New Order, very hard to pigeonhole and Billy had a fantastic eccentric edge to him! Real shame he died so young. Got most of the Associates/Billy Mackenzie back catalogue and largely it is hard to fault - Billy (and Alan R) were lyrical and instrumental geniuses.

Ah yes, but if I'm feeling all epic but also slightly ethereal, I'm quite partial to "The Unforgettable Fire" as well.

U2 are one of those bands that you're really supposed to hate, but I just can't do it It probably helps that all their best ideas were swiped from Joy Divsion anyway...

well tbh vertigo IS isolation as far as the bassline goes,but so bloody what,new order are hardly innocents when it comes to nicking ideas for songs. new order have swiped ideas from maddona to hot chocolate and visa versa and furthermore is it really nicking?,the fact that many people are getting off on a 24 yr old jd groove makes me smile even if they dont know it.:)

I've always felt that U2 overplayed the worthy card too much, with Bono being more a self publicist than a band member.

Somehow he has the air of someone who considers himself to be bigger than the band and it came across imho on JR's show..

I've always admired NO's shunning of the spotlight by comparison, as a teenager they just seemed "cooler" for it.

I know we're not comparing but U2 seemed to follow trends whereas NO at least tried, sometimes failing (often miserably :D ) to set them

hiya mick. i only twigged the hot chocolate ripp when hooky himself pointed it out in an interview,where he was being asked about other bands emulating or blatanntly nicking ideas from them(lightning seeds "pure" and love vigilantes comes to mind. to which hooky replied that he didnt really mind all that much as he thought it was quite flattering to have other musicians rate them enough to want to do something similar,at which point he pointed out the the bassline to "thieves like us" is a direct copy almost note for note of hot chocolates "emma". of course a ran out and bought hcs greatest hits and lo and behold he wasnt lying,they are almost identical in note but thieves is quicker in tempo. quest completed
