Hmm... If I have to pick just one, I guess it should be Getting Away With It.
But songs like Get The Message, Forbidden City or Time Will Tell are serious contenders.
Tough to come up with just one...

Its gotta be TwistedTenderness - which i think is an excellent, powerful track.
Getting Away With It also rates up there as one of my favourite Electronic tracks.

I remember putting a thread up a while ago where i mentioned that some of Barneys best lyric writing moments have surfaced in Electronic work.
The most interesting IMO, for the mix of Bartos' sound and Barney's melodies : I feel alright ('For You' CD1 3rd track)

Definitely. i was having alisten to the first album the other day and thinking how good the lyrics are, particuarly in comparison to some of the lame efforts on GR
the one where Barney is clearly heard farting during the middle and Johnny Marr applauds him.

Getting away with it. And the one where you hear Barney puke and Johnny Marr eating it, can't remember the title though.
Tighten Up has the essence of the Electronic collaboration tied up neatly in 5minutes. Johnny Marr's guitar work on that song is the best since the Smiths (even better than The The tracks) and Barneys lyrics/delivery seal the deal. Now if only that synth noise that drives the intro wasn't so dated. I love the whole first album but if I had to choose one, Tighten Up gets my vote.
I have to say I have a tie between "Try all you want" and "Some distant memory". I'm not sure why, but I get a kick out of the fact that out of all the real instruments they could have had on the album they decided to put an oboe on "some distant memory". does anyone know why this is?

Get the Fooking Message. Might have been Tighten Up without that old-fashioned synth noise. That's the problem with the first album: it sounds a little cheap. I prefer the production of the third album: much more creative and daring...

I totally agree about the "cheap" sounding first album, although its got some killer tracks on it its got a lacking element of polished production that TT has, and even RTP to be honest.
I thought one of the major probs with RTP was the over-production. i think barney said something similar. The production on TT is first rate though

I'm not sure if I would agree on that one - the best guitar work other than The Smiths? Some of his The THe stuff - particularly the heavy stuff - Dogs of Lust/ Sodium Light baby etc and even from Mindbomb is particularly good. Tighten up is excellent - but the guitar work is very similar to the Smiths.
I agree and that's why i like it so much. Dogs of Lust/Help Line Operator are awesome but in a different style. I like Johnny's guitar the way it was during the 80's, chiming melodies and strumming chords into my subconscious roller-disco. Biggest disappointment in my life was driving 4hrs after class to catch The The at Tipitina's in New Orleans with my Johnny Marr t-shirt in tow only to find out Johnny was back in dear ol Blighty having a baby! That bastard! I held up the T-Shirt anyway and kept yelling for Johnny Marr until his replacement showed me his middle finger. Matt Johnson put on an amazing show that night even with a second rate guitarist.
I had that t-shirt - white with Johnny's picture in red. I wore it to the NO/ACR/Mondays gig at the Gmex in 88.
I've seen The The 3 times with and without Johnny, and I can say that they are awesome with Marr. Matt Johnson could never see the point in NO though. Shame!

Nah...just thought I'd get everyone to write in...actually...I was going to end this on 7 December, but I've been too busy with work...but I have two nights off in a row now...so maybe I can tabulate it tonight...
The only Electronic track I possess/have ever heard is "Getting Away With It". I got away without out (hearing) anything else for years, as I went through a "no to N.O." period between Technique and Republic, (partly out of being so gutted at Brum 89 that the NEC security made me take my studded belt off, and I had to stand at the front with hands in pockets to keep my jeans up :), partly because too many of my musically formative years had been channelled into essentially one band, and I needed to expand my horizons somewhat) and apart from Monaco haven't ever bothered with the side projects. One day maybe I will have a listen to some stuff.
Of course, it has got to be "Some Distant Memory" off that first LP - I don't have the two later albums - just sorta lost interest in the whole Electronic thing - but the first LP is great only one dud track - Gangster - even the Tennant/Lowe collab "Patience Of A Saint" doesn't grate as bad as the appalling "Getting Away With It".
But "SDM" is in a league of its own - the most touching thing he's done since "1963" - and what a gorgeous ending....true - this is the only place you'll hear an oboe on a New Order-related song.
That lead instrument on NO's Times Change sounds a bit like an oboe. Although it's probably only a synth preset. Speaking of Times Change, I think is vastly underrated, just like Some Distant Memory.

I agree with 'Times Change' being underrated : I love the thing sounding like an Oboe that might well be an Oboe and the chorus.

Quite right, Buster - Barney just cannot rap for toffee - I think he should stop trying to be Grandmaster Flash and just get on with writing some decent fucking lyrics for a change....
