do you really need all those dance-remixes? i would love to buy singles with different songs on it, not versions. most of them don´t sound like the original song at all.
who needs remixes?

Michael Sonic you are absolutely correct-o-mundo.... as I have well stated on numerous occassions on this very website all remixes are shite.
The only decent thing ever to come of a re-mix is when they're done by New Order themselves.... like.... Shame of the Nation The Kiss of Death, Perfect Pit etc. The Beach and so on.
Who on God's clean earth really wants to listen to Crystal the G-Klass Carmen Bentley Deftone Jimmy Hoskins Abu Dabi Sidewalk Trivial Sub-zero mega-splodge mix 3??????? - I'm into recording music also and believe me, it takes about 10 minutes to put a 4/4 bass drum down and lob Barney on in the background with a filter through it.
It makes me so upset, fuck it.
Absolutely right buddies !
I don't like any of the remixes which were done for NewOrder (except maybe the ShepPettibone-Mix for TrueFaith). And i don't understand the argument to do the 2001 remixes of True Faith. "We want to introduce NewOrder to a new audience" What ? If you want to introduce NewOrder you have to use the originals and nothing else. I'm making music by myself and i agree that it doesn't take hours to put a simple bassdrum beat under a song. I don't think the "Crystal" remixes are very inventive... I'd prefer some more studio outtakes like the brilliant "Behind Closed Doors" or "Don't do it" or "Best & Marsh" for instance.
Personally, I do quite like some of the remixes, Heard the Lee Coombs one down at Fabric in London, and it sounded fu**ing excellent in that environment. Find the BEdrock ones quite listenable, and again they fit quite well into the 'progressive house' scene. Obviously New Order have had their fair share of dire mixes as well (them on 1963-'95' anyone...) What does really piss me off though is this habit of publishing a 2nd 'remix' cd..am I being a bit harsh suggesting the idea is that the customer accidently picks this one up rather than CD1..goes home, finds they've got the wrong one and is forced to buy CD1 as well?
it´s an easy way to publish two or even three formats without using new songs. seems like bands these days produce only the 10 songs they put one the cd and then leave the studio and go dancing?
Obviously the 2cd single plan is also so obsessives, myself included, will buy 2 copies of the single rather than one. Devious Bastards.
I think the Lee Coombs remix of Crystal is quite good; it preserves the elements of the original but modifies them enough to be interesting.
patrick: have you ever bought a LEE COOMBS record? i never have heard oft that guy? but when i buy a NEW ORDER record, i don´t wanna have any trance or house or disco stuff by total different people on it.
mikesonic:
No, I have never heard of Lee Coombs before this remix. I guess my feeling is I enjoy the variety. I can only listen to the basic version of the song so many dozen times before it begins to get a little bit stale. Believe me, I listened to the radio edit of Crystal on the Japanese single many, many times. And of course the 6:50 album version is refreshingly different. But to me a good remix can make the song fresh again.
I agree totally with Patrick on this one. The Lee Coombs mix is based around the original song, and is a refreshingly different take on the song. Lee Coombs himself is A new young DJ who is hotly tipped as a house DJ. I saw him play a cracking set at Fabric only a couple of weeks ago.
At the end of the day, as always it's a matter of taste. Personally I like a lot of current dance music and feel the remixes on the CD are all good examples of current club scene. NO have always tried to support whichever dance scene is current through their choice of remixers and the fact that such high profile DJs as John Digweed are remixing Crystal, acknowledge the debt dance music has paid to NO
Trouble with cd singles loaded with remixes is : who's really going to listen to those more than once ? And even once ? Of course, there can be good remixes but I think it's mostly boring.
That's a good question, in fact : who listens to thoses remixes more than once ?
That could almost be a new topic for this forum...

I for one listen to the GOOD remixes many times: the Spooky remixes, the remixes of TBTHOG and Confusion on Rest Of, several of the World remixes, the Regret remixes (but NOT Van Helden), the remixes on Substance Abuse 1994...
don´t get me wrong i like dance stuff and jump around to fat beats at night, but most of those remixes are pointless. best example is the latest DEPECHE MODE release I FEEL LOVED brrrrrrrr NEW ORDER were allways sub-culture to me, underground music, new wave! something very special a ghost from the past, whispering from time to time mainstream-house-club-party-mixes are definitely not NEW ORDER
As far as I'm concerned, I think remixes CAN be a nice addition to a single if the remix respects the original song. In other words, tracks that do not sound anything like the original, not respecting the melody of the original song, and sometimes only sampling ONE word in a song needs to be trashed. I HATE these ones. And these remixes came out suddenly in the mid-90s when any idiot around the corner could release his own techno record. From that moment, the remixes became more original tracks FROM the remixers than anything else. Original tracks using samples and loops from the "remixed artists"'s songs.
Good examples of these would be some of the Joe T. Vanelli's remixes of 1963 or the Armand Van Helden mix of Bizarre Love Triangle (for which I said, back in 1995, that Van Helden should be shot for doing what he did to this fantastic song), the numerous Blue Monday 95 mixes or even the Pump Panel mixes of Confusion, the latter being a great techno track, but a bad remixes based on these criterias.
On the other hand, remixes can be very useful to enhance a song. Like someone stated, the Shep Pettibone remix of True Faith was nice, and so was the extended version of Touched By The Hand of God (and I liked the Biff & Memphis remix as well as the BIAS remix of the same song).
Who would say today that the Shep Pettibone mix of Bizarre Love Triangle wa sa bad one? It MADE the song what it is today - a classic 80s hit. Personally, I think that the remixes of Fine Time and Round and Round were very nice, and I was very impressed by the Fire Island Mix of Regret, almost every remix of World and Spooky, and still think today that the K-Klass Reunited in a Day Remix of Ruined in a Day is one of the best remixes that I heard in my entire life.
Seb.

I do have to disagree a little.. the Jam & Spoon remix of Blue Monday IS good.
As for respecting the original, the Hardfloor EDIT does that quite well... except Bernard's voice is put in a black box, but well...
Pointless remixes are Pump Panel's, 1963 remixes (except those EXCELLENT Arthur Baker Remixes), the Advent remixes of EGG, non-Perfecto remixes of True Faith 1994... Age of Consent on the rest of (BLT too of course)...
Those are ridiculous remixes, anyone listening to this can't relate to New Order and say "Well, let's see what they also do" and LIKE IT, because it's 100% different.
But remixes like BLT/True Faith by Shep Pettibone, and like I said, the Arthur Baker remix of 1963 (which is the best New Order remix I've heard, this one is so enhancing the song it's now one of my favorite).. this is what they should do..

I agree that there have been a lot of pointless remixes created, but there are some that are fun. I actually really like all of the "Crystal" remixes. I had to really force myself to sit through all twelve minutes of the longer ones at first, but now they've grown on me. I would still of course prefer more real b-sides like "Behind Closed Doors" instead, but New Order have never been much on doing b-sides with vocals. I prefer remixes to intrumental tracks such as "Best And Marsh".
I really do like the Arthur Baker-remix of "1963". The cover says "additional production" by Arthur Baker. So i was wondering...there's a lot more of Hooky's bass and acoustic guitars than in the original version. Does that mean ArthurBaker actually played these additional instruments or were that some recordings that weren't used in the original production ???
Who knows ?
I'm sorry to be the odd one out but i like remixes.
new order and dance culture have been tied together from the early days(confusion and arthur baker, the hacienda, technique and ibiza, calling a song ecstacy in 1982!).the remixes will always be part of it and we dont HAVE to buy them...but we do!
mind you,i dont mind if i never hear that howie b mix of age of consent again...
I prefer the World Perfecto Mix to the original version on Republic. I actually did not like World at all when i first heard it but I am a complete fan of this Perfecto Mix. And I think that the remixes of Ruined in Day are quite VERY good too.

Well, there is great remixes off Republic.. the Fire Island & New Order Mixes of Regret, the Perfecto Mix of World, and the K-Klass mix of Ruined in a Day (or Reunited In A Day if you prefer).. and all Spooky mixes...
I must admit.. it's after 1993 that this started to be bad... except of 1963!

I agree that remixes do justice to a song if it reflects the band. Some just take the song and make it a little more than the original, like the True Faith Shep Pettibone mix. This song is basically the original tweeked a bit. It is still considered a re-mix though. I personally like it better than the original. Some re-mixes don't even represent the orignial at all but still seem to keep New Order's style. Touched By The Hand Of God (Biff Memphis re-mix)doesn't have many of the lyrics but the song still has the feel of New Order (well to me it does). Some are just "house music rejects" kind of like the Armand Van Helden remix of BLT. That songs brings me back some bad memories of horrible house songs. That is just a horrible song. As for the Crystal remixes I like Digweed but to just hear him when I want to hear New Order just doesn't cut it.
well that is my opinion...
there are some NO song who needed remixes the whole REPUBLIC album and half of TECHNIQUE here the originals were mutant-tech-dance, sounded good with new dancebeats and worked on the dancefloor but now, on GET READY we have real songs!!!!! good oldfashioned songs. by the way, there are some remixes i really like: REGRET -SABRES MIX -slow one RUN 2 (no real remix-i know) and the HARDFLOOR mix of BLUE MONDAY (but in 95 i liked most of the HARDFLOOR stuff)
there are some artists who would do interestings things to NO songs, like FISCHERSPOONER, OP:L BASTARDS, QUEEN OF JAPAN, TWO LONE SWORDSMEN or PLASTIKMAN... maybe there is some hope for the next singles
I totally agree with the TwoLoneSwordsmen getting a shot at mixing some tracks. andrew weatherall and new order are due for a reunion. maybe vicious streak could be redone. if you heard the recent weatherall mix of deep, down and dirty by stereo mc's you know he's on top form at the moment. too bad his mix of Electronic didn't make the single but it is available on a TLS 12" (a virus without shoes, i think)
brian: in a different version its a TLS track with some ELECTRONIC samples in it the coolest thing on TLS remixes is, you never know what happens the CALEXICO remix was very strange ambient stuff yeah TLC should remix VICIOUS STREAK and turn it into an mutant-electro-punk-track
it would be a bit shortsighted to dismiss remixing neworder as pointless considering the huge impact they have had on dance culture and the sound. the lee coombes mix of crystal is sick and would sound awesome in a club. i love the fire island mix of regret (i actually prefer this to the original), hardfloor blue monday but agree with the unanimous feeling of this board that van helden is a c^#t for buthchering BLT. steve hurleys mix of fine time is also fantastic and is an example of an early house pioneer paying respects to the most inluential artists of the 70's/80's.
I'd like to see Sasha remix a New Order track- worked wonders for the Chems 'Out of Control'. I believe he was also approached to remix crystal before Digweed/Muir, but was unable to do because of other commitments. Weatherall would be great, but I think with Pete Tong A&R'ing the remixes I imagine it's more likely to be house and prog trance remixes rather than twisted techno. Just as long as twat boy slim gets nowhere near a track....
Here is another take on the remixes. I have a group of friends much younger than myself. I played Crystal for them, and they thought it was OK, but nothing great.
Then I played the Digweed remix. That they LOVED and started asking me all about NO.
So perhaps remixes can be used to cross the age barrier.
I don't want fucking teenie boppers to like New Order. The day I see New Order on TRL is the day I kill myself.
Not all remixes are bad...what was the instrumental version of the perfect kiss on the b-side of the 12" U.S. single, the perfect pit...well, it wasn't even really an instrumental...mainly the drum bit, but I love the fook out of it!!

HERE HERE I agree on that one... I don't know if I even want it to be played on KROQ!!!
KROQ. Is that in"That's a KROQ of shit"?
Is it like our wonderful Radio 1 here in the UK i.e bland playlists all day with half decent stuff at 2 in the morning??

KROQ is our rock station here, they really support Depeche Mode whenever they tour. I am not too into the music because all they play is Limp Biskit or whatever... I am not into that kind of music...
KROQ is still better than daytime radio here in germany all you get is top20 and club-hits and at night you can listen to the history of soft-rock -all we are is dust in the wind-

We have a couple of those here too: KIIS FM plays all of your "bubble gum" hits (boy bands and such) and also the dance tracks, they will throw some rock in there but nothing like Nine Inch Nail or anything...
Also we have Star 98.7 which plays all of the soft rock hits and regular rock, they will play the same stuff over and over though..
I still listen to KROQ only because they are the only ones that play all rock and the most decent music unfortunately.
the remixes are essential. let me tell you why...
- they widen the fan base for neworder by introducing the music to people who might not know much about the band.
- it gives neworder "legendary GOD status in clubs around the world.
- it fills the pocket of our favorite group, and allows them to live a decent life. ex: when i first heard neworder it was at a party in the 80"s and they played bizarre love triangle. I HAD TO KNOW WHO MADE THIS RECORD! it was the remix. even though i love club music, ceremony was probably my second favorite song from substance. you see, these remixes are only their to lure in new and devout listeners like myself, and i am thankfull for that!
