a history in cuttings

i`m totally intrigued by this book. does anyone know who compiled it and whether there are differing editions of it? also is it particularly rare? does anyone have a copy? is it any good? how much did you pay for it?

I've got two versions of it, and I would imagine there are more. No idea who compiles it and it was some time (ie at least five years ago) that I got them, so I can't tell you about price either.

I wondered the same thing in an earlier thread, and I've never come across anybody who knew anything about it. The people at Rough Trade San Francisco were not aware of the origins of the book the day I visited them and picked up both editions. Sorry.

for those who have it; is it worth bothering to track a copy down? or should i just go to the national sound archives and compile my own copy?

Keeping in spirit of the times, there are a few fanzine articles that I never would have seen had I not purchased the book, particularly enjoying something from a zine called NMX entitled 'Lig of the Century' about the date that Joy Division played with Cabaret Voltaire in Brussels. It's written in an indulgent manner but is a more entertaing read than much of the psychoanalytic prose that followed in the wake of Ian's suicide.

There are front and back cover pics of the early bootlegs, lots of articles from the English, US and other publications (the second edition has quite a few written in Dutch) as well as the first published lyrics that JD/NO fans had seen at the time. Also, there is a complete gig guide up to the time as well as known info as to whether or not tapes of the gig have been circulating. IMHO, if you ever see these books, or know where a copy or two is located, I would highly recommend to the utmost purchasing them. I have NEVER ever regretted buying them, if only I suppose to maintain the images of the late 70's/ early 80's when there were lots of great bands and great records seemingly made every year.

Have you seen a copy listed that is available to purchase? That would be interesting to know, seeing as how I perused my copy of the second edition while typing this. In it I found a receipt from my college bookstore dated Sept. 20,1985, which gives you a rough time frame when the books were available.

Several editions of this stapled together collection of photocopied music paper and magazine cuttings from different countries appeared in the early 1980s. It possibly originates from The Netherlands. It started out as a slim lyrics collection, but more and more pages were added with each subsequent edition, also covering New Order. An early edition featured a free 7"EP/cassette. The later editions also include gig guides and nice pictorial bootleg discographies of both bands, and a staggering number of reviews, interviews, features, retrospectives etc from 1977-1984. As this "book" is not printed but consists of photocopies the quality leaves something to be desired, but all the useful information contained within it makes it well worth having all the same. Not too easy to find though (and out of print)."

it seems that there are 2 editions; "1977-1984" and then an "additions and updates" edition. from what Green wrote and what ive read elsewhere they come very highly recommended but unfortunately appear to be rare. a few months ago i saw a copy on ebay, but the bidding was starting at £25 so i couldnt even contemplate making an offer :( obviously its a collectors item, but still, i reckon that £25(at minimum) is a rather inflated price. if i do manage to get my hands on one of the editions i`ll be happy to make you a copy

I have a friend who has it, she scanned me a couple of articles once so I could get an idea what it was about. The two she sent me were by Dave McCollugh (if that's the one I'm thinking about, where he slams JD after getting stiffed for an interview). I would say for a perspective on JD before the fall, it'd be the best. I think it's out of print, like most of the JD books

I have both these books. The only touble is though, that "book" is a rather generous term. Infact each one is basically a pile of A4 with some rather large staples holding them together.

I'm a bit worried about copying them for you as it would mean removing said staples. If I can settle on a satisfactory way of re-assembling the pages afterwards, then no problem. I'll have a think and get back to you!

Shug, I actually have a spare copy of "Joy Division & New Order -A History In Cuttings -Volume 2" (with more European language articles in it than volume 1 - so that'll help you to learn some more French, German and Dutch) as I already have one of each already, but seeing as you've been such an obnoxious bastard to me in recent posts, I will consider sending it to someone else who is truly deserving of it - perhaps a possible future Teaser winner? Hmmmmph! Any offers, anybody??

Hey Martian I'm a librarian by trade, so books are my thing (law books actually) this is quite interesting piece of history (another of my loves) so I would be honored to be considered, if you were going to part with your extras. They would be in a very safe place also.

As a final appeal, we are close in the age thingy that I have going on... ;)

since i am familiar with dollars, how much is L25 (sorry) in U.S. dollars????
