Ian vs Kurt--the Final battle!

It seems one of the threads sparked off a "Ian vs. Kurt" argument, so I decided: Why not devote a whole thread to it? Just drop your comments, give in to your anger, strike me down...oops, how'd Return of the Jedi get in there? Oh well, vent away, starting.......NOW!!!!!!

erm, I like em both actually. Not really a fair comparison, though. How about Hooky versus that bass player from the Cure? CTD

It would seem that they both did this - :headoff: - to themselves in one way or another.

I am afraid I have to disagree with you as well, Shuggy. In fact I think that Nirvana had the same power and intensity as Joy Division. Both Ian and Kurt were wonderful songwriters who captured genuine and heartfelt emotion. Of course this is subjective, but there you are. I feel blessed to have both Nirvana's and Joy Division's music in my life. Shug, have you ever listened to In Utero or Nevermind in their entirety? If not, maybe give it a shot. Might change your mind?

Shug, you are exactly right. I've added my piece somewhere else on these pages so i don't want to repeat myself (i'll just repeat Shug). Kurt Cobain is an overrated Wanker you just bought into the fucking hype MTV sold you.

I'll sya this: KC's death left an opening for the terrible, terrible crap that's been perpetrated on the music scene since then. Without Kurt killing himself, all the grunge kids wouldn't have fled for cover, leaving their Whitney-Houston-obessed younger siblings to take over. I feel much the same about Nirvana - they were only really rated because their attitude fitted in to this ideal created in the early 90's. Joy Division, and Ian himself seem to have become more popular throughout time which is a lasting testament to their songs.

I did use to hate Nirvana fans at school.

And who do we blame for Fred Durst and all his kind?

Heavy Metal (and that includes Led Zepplin, though they had way more substance than fucking Fred Durst). When punk failed, what became big in the US? Hard rock, which, when bastardized with rap, begat Limp Biscuit.

Fred Durst, the king of riding daddy's coat tails....blame Cobain for him too. MTV bullshit! That's why we shouldn't be too eager to see our heroes on television all the time, look what happened when they signed to a major. if they start getting airplay who knows whats next ....featuring Eminem on vocals or maybe backing vocals by Christina Aguilara...when will the starfucker attitude cease at the neworder camp? does neworder need a guest on their albums? Billy Corgan? It's almost enough to make me give up...almost.

The whole comment about Barney including Billy because of his kids reminds me of George Lucas defending his piece of crap Episode I: "My kids liked the idea of a pod race" or words to that effect. Nevermind that was the one damn part of the movie worth seeing again!.....

Anyway, as i've probably said many times before, Turn My Way is one of the top favorites on Get Ready for me, so it turned out well as far as I'm concerned. You disagree, and that's okay. Last time I checked, we could still do that, so let me take time to slam Bush's policy on..(a black helicopter lands on the house, Federal agents burst in and arrest Tabsy for sedition. He is led off to a secret govnerment facility and never heard from again...)

Brian, I'm a bit suprised for your dislike of the colaborations. Personally I didn't think Corgan detracted from Turn My Way, despite the fact I agree the blokes a knob-jockey.

But how many collabs has Bernie done in the last 10 years? Did he get the PSB's on board for Electronic solely to boost album sales? I don't think so personally. Likewise, he's colabarated with 808 state, Technotronic, the mondays, the Chemicals, Sub Sub and probably more that I can't reel off at the mo. Hooky's done a few as well. It can't be any real suprise that theyve allowed a few collaborations on their own album can it?

What I'm trying to say is I may be being naive here but I think Corgan was genuinely involved for the reasons that NO have given - afterall if they were going to sell-out commercially why did they make such an un-commercial album as GR and not a 'Republic 2' with pretty melodies and catchy synths?

If anything GR gave me more hope than previously as it is such a fucking great album - if they could produce just one more album half as good as GR I'd be a happy man.

If they wanted to go commercial, why not Oasis, Freddy and the Biscuit boyz, the Supremes, oops I mean Destiny's Child (they do have ONE thing in common--frequent line-up changes)

What I was saying is Billy doesn't exactly have sway with the Britney crowd (remember how well their last one did? Anyone, anyone at all?)

Barney and Hooky have done some excellent collaborations in the past without a doubt but there is no need for an american rock star to add vocals/guitar to any new order album. Turn My Way is not a bad song, in fact, i kinda like it but Corgan was not necessary. I seriously think it would have been better if they had added effects to barney's vocal if they wanted an additional voice. What does Corgan's voice/lyrics add to the meaning of the song? The whole Corgan collaboration sounds like a gimmick to me and i doubt i'll be able to think differently about it. If barneys kids keep giving him advice on albums maybe well get stickers or a coloring page with the next LP.

I've heard DC is breaking up, Tabsy. Presumably so Beyonce can keep all the money for herself (and her dad).

I wasn't very excited by the idea of a colloboration with Billy Corgan when I heard but I have to admit it turned out pretty well. I have always hated the Smashing Pumpkins, since Gish came out, for a lot of the reasons that people said they hated Nirvana (above posts). I think there are a lot more interesting people NO could have used, I personally was more interested in the Chem Bros colloboration.

To an extent I agree the there was no need for the Cretin to be on the album-but I don't think it was done for fear of their careers going down the drain as you suggested.

Yeah I listened to Nevermind quite a lot when it came out - but I'm afraid I just got bored with it mate - as for In Utero - 1 listen was enough mate - so not much chance of me changing my mind - As for SLTS I fucking hate it, my wee brother has just learned geetar and all he fucking plays is THAT riff In the end Cobain himself got a wee bit fucked off about it an all, everyone jumping on the bandwagon - so to speak.

I don't listen to either album much anymore, either. I get burnt out on the overplaying of music on the radio, MTV, etc really easily. What always annoyed me was that Nirvana was an extension of great eighties bands like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur, Jr. and they never got credit. Everyone seems to think that they came out of thin air, which wasn't the case. But I still dig 'em.
