Is it REALLY a big issue? I'm still new to this site, in fact the only reason I found the place is from meeting some of the old regulars a few times at gigs. I knew the nicknames before I'd even got here, but without that it's still pretty obvious who the high post counters are... The ones who've developed a - dare I say it - friendship from being around online and from getting pissed at gigs or whatever. So there are newbies drawn here from Gwen Stefani links or hype created by Krafty-cheese-slice-singles. If they've got something to say, let 'em say it (or point them respectfully towards the FAQ page). If it's something interesting everyone should take it and carry it on regardless of a post count in single figures. Likewise, is someone with a PC of 7000 a waffler, or a valued member of the community? Who cares?! We're all here for our own reasons. Some like to chat, some don't. Some like to just visit to see what's going on.

Surely that's why sites like this are set up?

I used to post on a site where there was a big debate about whether to ban lurkers, for feck's sake!

Keep it. Lose it. Whatever. We all talk shite at times. We all speak with passion about things... Does a league table of numbers matter? Not to me. My tuppence in the hat, thank you. Beer please...

Btw, who's this Gillian people talk about? Was she in a band or something?! :p

I'm going with the "make it optional for those who want to see theirs" crowd on this one.

I voted that I don't really care - I know it's a cop out, but what the hell...

I've been visiting since the site started, but haven't posted anywhere near as much as others - in fact, without looking at the post number next to my avatar, I couldn't tell you how many posts I've made.

What matters to me is the information I get from this site and from all the great people who post here. Some of it is informative, some funny, some just plain strange, but all of it entertaining in its own right.

As for the lad from 'Ceremony' - I read his reply and (I'm sorry, I was too dumb/ignorant to remember his screen name) I thought his reply was sincere, sensible and more than acceptable - good chap in my book!

Anyway, enough of my rambling... back to the funny farm...

Keep the post counts -- it's informative.

Also, leave Tarbox alone! He's done no harm! he's one of the original members of Ceremony who's still around. I remember reading his posts back in 1993 when Republic was released and the Internet as we know it was just beginning. THE GOOD OLD TIMES!!! :)

By the way Mat, where can I hear your music ???

Also, stop harassing oldmonkey -- his post count shows this guy'S true passion: MUSIC. Passionate people should be allowed to do whatever they want on this site (well, almost...) without being annoyed.

And finally, leave our good friend Jarvo alone -- he's a role model to us all.

Yours truly,

Seb.

Removing the post count is totally irrilevant, I don't know how can you take seriously such a thing... I mean even without count we all see who's posting more, right? It's not like we remove the count and tomorrow comes Mr. Joe Bollox and we think he's on the forum since 2001 and has posted hundreds of messages ;) Also many of us come from Ceremony, we know each other, I mean I don't think anyone would think a member called "Warren Lapham" or "Richard Kernin" is a newbie... Finally I never cared when my post count was below 12, anyone here can speak like the others, I just wrote in the same spirit of now back when I started... If someone writes something good they can do it when their post count is low and you can still write a load fo bullshit when your count is above 20000... It's just funny to see the post count, so I'd like to keep it, at least on our viewable profiles, or at the very least in our private area... But removing it wouldn't make sense, it would be like removing our names from the mailing list archive... it's just history, no reason to hide it. If your post count is small and you really care (I actually never expected to reach the 200th post), then use those fookin fingers on your keyboard and increase it! ;)

Hey Seb you wanna hear Tarbox's music? Then go here: http://music.tarbox23.com Just heard something yesterday and he does great stuff...

BTW, I prefer to "show posts" as an option. I would like to not show my number of posts.

Keep 'em please, and if there'll be an option to not view the post count, that'll be fine as well. I'm not one to get hung up on the quality v. quantity argument, I've learned from posters of both sides.

Originally posted by Andrew In some ways post count and its associated membership status changes don't give a fair reflection. I, for instance, have been a member of NOOL for over three years and regularly check the website for news etc. but don't use the forums so much (use more when something 'major' is happening). So my post count suggests I'm a newbie when in fact I'm a long-standing member. Point: maybe some membership status change associated with length of time as memeber?

I'm with ya, Andrew. :thumb: I've been a member for awhile and followed Ceremony since the mid-90s, but I don't post much on here due to time constraints and such. As for my vote, let's just say I am listening to the "I Don't Care" Dub now. ;)

Personally, I'm not really that fussed about losing the post count nor keeping it. I suppose the real question is whether it's being used as a discrimination factor in listening to what people to say, which is obviously elitism bullshit. NewOrderOnline should be for all New Order fans, newbie/intermediate/hardcore and I think Nic has clearly always intended this (hence the fair debate he's begun here) Not everyone knows the colour of Barney's socks when the band played the Retford Porterhouse in 1981, and you shouldn't be smirked at as if it's a basic fact any "true" New Order fan would know. That's just an example, if an utterly tragic one.

I'll try not to offend anyone here, but I do think the users with large post counts (oldMonkey recently being a good example) having a celebratory thread for their 10,000th post is pushing things a bit far. I read that and thought "Nice (if slightly scary) going with the post count mate, but why is this in Digital Republic?" I want to read about Krafty and the new album, not this. Perhaps it had more of a place in one of the other forums and I think I have a fair point here, obviously no disrespect to the guy. I honestly couldn't give a toss about post count but I suppose I do give a toss about contributions and I'm sure oldMonkey's had his fair share.

I notice that the folk who have the larger post counts would be less inclined to lose them (His Holiness) I have a puny 110 and I wouldn't really care if it was stripped from me, it wouldn't affect my future longwinded posts :) I've been a New Order fan for 10 years, have a large(ish) collection including a rather obsessive streak when it comes to the band's discography (the side projects too of course) plus I've seen them live twice. I love nothing better than a dead obscure New Order find that no-one else (family, friends etc.) gets excited about except me.

I personally voted "No" in the above poll, because if I'd voted "Yes" it would reflect I hold the post count in some high esteem. Obviously not, I'm just not bothered about it.

Ally.

I disagree Ally. Maybe it could have gone in Behind Closed Doors but if you don't want to read the thread you don't have to open it.

Ally, the milestone reaching celebration was something started in the site's infancy by a group of longstanding members, who celebrated the change of rank by posting an amusing Oscar acceptance speech-style tract. Over time this got whittled down a bit, there are fewer milestones after all the more posts you make, it's taken 5000 posts to go from Low-Life to whatever rank I have now been assigned......

The post was put in Digital Republic because I was marking the milestone by giving away a free New Order live recording. I had originally thought of hiding the post in the Portuguese forum, or something similar, but then decided to give something to everyone instead. I'm sorry this has offended you, I promise I won't offer to give anything to anyone ever again!

Ally - you're probably my favourite poster here. You always seem to have something interesting to say, and are not afraid to say WHY you like/dislike a track. A refreshing change from the 'I don't like it because it's crap' style of crit. Keep it up!

Like you, I have a mere 120 or so posts to mey name. In fact I'm not sure anyone's noticed me yet!

You didn't offend me! I simply read your post and didn't think it had much relevance for Digital Republic. And of course other people are correct in saying I can simply choose not to read a thread. I'll try to clarify what I was originally trying to say: I wasn't hugely offended or put out by reading oldMonkey's post at all, I was just struggling to see it's relevance in the main forum and thought it would've perhaps been ideal for BCD. That's my own personal opinion and I certainly wouldn't dream of complaining to Nic to enforce it or any such nonsense, just a "passing" point of view held with no particular passion.

I think judging from our "Member Since" dates, oldMonkey and I have been members for roughly the same amount of time yet obviously there is a gigantic gap in our post counts. Me doing a 150th post celebration thread in Digital Republic would have all the members with 1000+ scratching their heads would it not? It works the other way too for us lurkers.

As for your live show giveaway, I'm not critising that in the least. Cool offer, keep it up. :thumb:

Ally.

PS. Cheers DC! :evil4:

Fair enough. Two things though, firstly my "start date" is nearly a year out, a long story but one that Seb will no doubt be only too pleased to fill everyone in on when he is in one of his more playful moods :evil4:

Secondly, I think you may have still missed my point over the milestone thread. Many of the original crew here, the likes of Major T, Liv, Martian etc, used to make an OTT and highly amusing acceptance speech when they reached a certain rank. Shug's biggest milestone speech took 9 hours to read, and was one of the most truly amazing essays on what it is to be a New Order fan, one which struck a chord with all the hardcore, he had got it down to a T. A big T as it happens, Spotnick had to buy a new server to cope with all the people reading it! Obviously the milestone become fewer and further between after a while, and some of the original social posse (yes, NOOL got us all meeting up and drinking etc) went by the wayside, Martian to a parallel universe and Liv to blissful happiness and a new job to name but two. Others replaced them in the field of frequent posters, the site became popular amongst the disaffected yoot of certain United States, who once they had established that New Order weren't playing near them in the near future, that they hadn't covered an Orgy song and that Confusion wasn't their first release, soon settled down to offer a curious blend of complete bollocks and useful insight. If you'd have preferred the 10k post be sent as an e-mail to those who had been major players in this site at the start, then again I can only apologise for cluttering your bandwidth. I make absolutely no apologies to anyone for continuing in the NOOL tradition of noting a posting milestone though. You may be interested to know that I am one of those who voted to have the post count either removed or made optional. The post count is a millstone, no two ways about it.

The post-count isn't such a millstone, the fcuking log-in count is! I'm just permanently logged in here, but I guess opening a new browser and seeing NOOL in that, which I'm wont to do cos I work in browsers all day long, means it looks like I'm logging in, then out, about 20 times a day!

Where's Dave Fox when you need him, calling me a sad cnuter, saying I've got no life and no job, hey?!

Hahah.... Yeah I had my own little run-ins with Seb (bless 'im) at the beginning of my membership of the site as well. It was a case of mistaken identity and we have since made up :D It all stemmed from a rather offensive message being posted in this very forum, and I was duly accussed 'cos me and Seb had some run-ins on the Ceremony mailing list in the past. Naturally I myself knew I wasn't behind it (definitely not my style, I barely fookin' swear in my posts as it is  ) and for the quickest way to prove it I said do an IP check. The offending anonymous IP came from the States and I lived in north-east Scotland, so I'll let everyone else make up their own minds on that one. Unfortunately at the time about 75% of the board (thanks to the occasional cliquey group mentality) took Seb's word as gospel and even when it was proven I was not responsible, nothing resembling an apology was ever posted which pissed me right off with NOOL for literally years.

My "Member Since" date is a little off too in a way; I've followed NOOL as a lurker since it's days as the "Temptation" incarnation, didn't actually sign up for a membership until enough time had passed for me and Seb to put our differences aside (ancient history now) but it's more than obvious now I think the site's pretty cool. I remember (with fondness) that Nic based an early incarnation of "Temptation" on a design I did for my Monaco site in '99 and being really flattered. I remember never being completely happy with that design, too many tables I thought, but he sent me an email one day saying "I did a quick mock up, I hope you don't mind, what do you think?". I remember thinking "well it looks good when someone else uses it" Soon after he ditched it and began NOOL afresh. So yes I do think the post counts are wholly irrelevant, but I never said I don't understand the sense of community here. But I do think it's important to not create exclusive little groups that make other users feel left out. I'm not (repeat not) saying that's happening or anything, but some newer users may not know the board background and feel isolated at times.

Cheers, Ally.

I got into NO my junior year in high school in early 1986. Seeing some of you crazy bastards with 10,000 posts reminds me - in a twisted way - that I did the right thing back then.

Wait there. Considering the date of my joining, I shall be one of the biggest loggers here. I have net at home and work. Everytime you enter the site is a loggon. So, I enter the site, see there's only crap threads (Jeff, Trevor), republican apology (Tristan), postmen complainings and Binoche adoration (Mike), and then I leave. But I am a hopeful kid, and I come back to see if there's something more interesting. And then I see crap threads (Jeff, Trevor), republican apology (Tristan), postmen complainings and Binoche adoration(Mike), and maybe Tim scolding at someone or someone scolding at Tim. Hopelessly, I come back again, and then I see the new New Order album, the name of the songs, hear Krafty in first hand, the interviews. And then I start all over again...

So, the number of loggons DOESNT mean anything about the time spent here.
