Alright, it seems obvious that some people would like to see the post count removed.

IMHO, this doesn't have a purpose other than freaking the people who post too much, but apparently I've seen other issues, I'll quote Matt Tarbox from the Ceremony Mailing List:

I would post more on NewOrderOnline if the post counts were removed. I think the post counts gives a false legitimacy to those who gab the most.

I prefer forums where there are no post counts and you judge members by their posts CONTENT. rather than pure quantity.

Which is why I like Ceremony and the usenet group. They are democratic, everyone gets the same respect.... nobody dismisses me cause I only post once a month....

So this time, I'll let YOU decide.. I'm working on the next "evolution" of the forum right now and it can be removed very easily, you'll also see the stats, you'll still have the forum ranks... but is the post count really relevant?

:confused2:

I'd like to see it stay out of spite for somebody who cared enough to campaign against it.

Thats a strange reason not to visit a forum. Doesnt matter to me although would that mean opening the doors of the weeding forum to everybody?

simple add a box to tick for those who don't want to see them, but don't remove them for the rest of us.

keep 'em. i need every scrap of legitimacy i can get around these parts. at least all of my posts aren't in the off-topic forum (like some people).

tarbox has his own issues after that whole scandal a while back. sour milk and spilt grapes and all that nonesuch.

i enjoy flaunting my almost 4000 posts because it reminds me of just how sick i must be to keep coming back here every day. let the newbies keep their own inferiority complexes...after all, we all had to deal with having a grand total of 3 posts at one time.

The day anyone starts taking Turdbox seriously is the day this site is doomed.

Post counts mean nothing, apart from to those with a chip on their shoulder. I like the option of having them visible or not, as with the avatar.

As you'll remember Spotnick I raised this same point several months ago - make the post count invisible/optional.

From a personal perspective, chalking up a vast number of posts here has only led to abuse from the likes of Turdbox, so I derive no satisfaction whatsoever from seeing 8,987,453 or whatever insignificant number there is aganst my name.

The DAY NOOL's bother what anyone else has to say or NEED to be taking SERIOUSLY themselves because of a POST COUNT is the time to GIVE IN.Everyone visits here for their OWN needs and reasons, some for a laugh, others for WRONG INFO :p ,and others just to get a FEEL on NEW ORDER.If one is bothered by POST COUNTS i have a very good FAILED THERAPIST i could recommend!:D Please do NOT count my opinion of this as a POST. With respect. ROCKET MICK at the COUNTER,fish and chips twice please.BTW just WHAT is the NEW single called?ARE they playing AMERICA and where is GILLIAN? :confused2: ANSWER is a B-side to SHELLSHOCK in AUSSIE!

Eh who cares? Post counts have been shown for all this time and no one seems to have a genuinecomplaint against it. So don't fix something if it ain't broke.

BTW I believe this is a ploy by Nic so no one sees that he will reach 10,000 posts and appears as a no-life loser...

Only kidding :wink::p

I think the optional viewing is the way to go. Personally I don't care about post counts, there's more to worry about in life. Unfortuntely some others dwell on it day and night and need to get one.

After 26 years of involvement with following this band, experience and memories are the only forms of validation I need, and if it weren't for so many fellow travellers and veterans on here, with whom so much of the history is shared, I wouldn't post anywhere near as much.

I guess, and no doubt this will be backed up by some of the other old timers round here, that the notion of celebrating a milestone stemmed from the change of rank associated with a number of posts. I remember conversations with Liv, Major and Shug etc about what happened when we became members of the Brotherhood, what was next etc. Any marking of a particular milestone sort of stems from that rank allocation, and it all became pretty meaningless when various people (Martian in particular, who placed great store in how many posts he made) moved away and took their leave of the community.

In some ways post count and its associated membership status changes don't give a fair reflection. I, for instance, have been a member of NOOL for over three years and regularly check the website for news etc. but don't use the forums so much (use more when something 'major' is happening). So my post count suggests I'm a newbie when in fact I'm a long-standing member. Point: maybe some membership status change associated with length of time as memeber?

Does anybody really read a forum message and think "what a gobshite", before then checking the post count and changing your mind because, like, s/he's posted a lot so they must know what they're talking about???? "False legitimacy"?????

Absolute arse. It wouldn't bother me if they went to be honest, but I see absolutely no reason for them to do so.

I already take care of that, it's "Administrator" that show up

So if it wasn't for ASK ROCKET thread I'd still be a newbie lol

As I pointed out in a previuos message (but not very successfully) it's not the reader that's concerned about the number of post, but the poster.

I'm covinced there are people here who get carried away, posting opinion as fact, thinking they carry more weight, purely for the fact they've got nothing else to do in their lives but post here, & have stacked up lot of messages.

Dave - d'ya wanna spare us the lame passive aggression and name names so the "culprits" can respond in person? That way you get to vent your spleen and those awful post count addicts can rack up their high scores!

You did indeed point this out, Dave. HERE, I believe. Not very eloquent saying people have (a) no lives and (b) no jobs if they post here more than the average Joe. Thing is, you never actually backed up your POV when challenged, though seem happy to raise the same accusations again some two months later in order, it seems, to have 'a dig' at various people (still un-named it seems).

I'm not sure why this thread was started. Has someone done something to goad Mr Tarbox over the weekend? I saw his comments on Ceremony before they were replicated here. Though why he thinks Ceremony is more 'clubby' and 'intimate' is beyond me. At least people here have faces and personalities, whereas it is the anonymity of alt.music.new-order and Ceremony which puts me off in the main. (Although I do, of course, often post on both mediums).

Always the same from our friendly Mr.Fox - wouldn't mind betting that 75% of his 89 posts have been barbed digs at someone or other. Life's too short for petty quarrels about posting on a bloody internet message board though.

Why does it matter, i like my post count, i worked hard to get here, its like deny someone their rights, if u really want, make them visible, or non visible in edit members thing, thats all, i want my post count DONT TAKE IT AWAY OR I WILL NEVER COME BACK (sadly u will take it away cuase u dont want me to come back....lol):evil4:

I'd rather see them go, if forced to choose. But who cares anyway - you're only as good as your last post!

I'd go for the 'let everyone chose for themselves' option. The fact that I may never make it into the top 100 posters won't bother me.

Also, the more stats there are available, the more time I spend on the site - when I should be making money to feed the family:nono::rofl:

well, honestly, I am not that worried about the post count! I was a bit surprised to see my offsite post made into a thread starter here. I am bummed that what I wrote offhand has become an issue. I will be more careful in the future.

I hope nobody here likes chocolate ice cream, cause I like vanilla! go ahead, chocolate lovers, call me Turdbox...

I would have NEVER posted that quote as a start to a NOO thread - it was posted at the tiny (intimate! dying!) Ceremony list in response to questions about whether Ceremony should continue. So I was trying to hype Ceremony and explain why I like Ceremony. Ceremony has been around since before HTML, and us lame oldtimers like its pure ascii format, and are sad it has declined in the past few years. Ceremony is David to the NOO Goliath, and I never thought in a million years my trying to hype it up a bit would upset anyone. Sorry, honestly.

As I wrote to Nicolas privately before I even saw this post here - I love NOO, I respect him immensely for running it so well for so long, and I continue to read NOO many times a day.

So, yeah, maybe I don't like silly smiley icons and moving gif graphics, but that doesn't mean I am attacking anyone. I am just old school and boring and dig pure ascii - that post was part of me turning in my name for a Ceremony list rollcall, and I typed a paragraph I now regret.

I honestly could care less about post counts I guess. It isn't that I despise them, it is just that I don't see the point of them. But, like I said, I like vanilla ice cream too, and perhaps you like strawberry....

I respect the folks here who have high post counts. They keep this forum lively and keeps me reading. And any New Order fan is brilliant in my opinion.

I guess, when I posted that to the fairly private Ceremony list, I didn't expect it would be a headline post here at NOO. Context should be considered...

Again, I love NOO. I am not kissing up. Proof is that I read the forums and news here everyday, often every few hours.

So, feel free to call me Turdbox. Feel free to dis me. I would think you guys would be more self-confident however, than to let some idiot like me upset you.

My post count? Low cause I am writing music. Original tunes at music.tarbox23.com - new order fans might like tracks 3, 2, 6, 7, 8 off my latest lp. Feel free to give them a listen, it is free and easy, and you just might change your opinion of me.... I dare ya...

Your post count? I love ya whether it is high or low. Either way, I know you appreciate the best music in the world.... and that makes us all in the best club, NOO....

p.s. wouldn't a word count be more accurate anyway, for folks like me who type far too much? (joke).

Must be said, I do rather enjoy your music sir. "One Afternoon" could be a New Order song with some of the strings, very reminiscent of Lonesome Tonight, Every Little Counts and All Day Long in places, not to mention the bass phrase in Sparks' When I'm With You, but there's some Lou Reed (not just the nod to Perfect Day!!) and The The somewhere in the back of your mind. Impressive stuff throughout. "Crude" is probably my favourite.

I suggest adding all and any post in the forum to Julio's account :evil4:

I am happy to sell some of my post counts, let's say £50 for a thousand posts:deal:

You's know the email address:wink:

i vote for "make it optional". the one who doesn´t want them is just one click away. and the one who wants them could have them too. just as the Online/Offline feature, i don´t know why it went away when you could click "don´t show me online" and voilá.

the best thing is to let everyone choose. is the most democratic way and everybody happy. :thumb:

If the number of posts equals the lack of "life", you wouldn't have a website to indulge your Hasselhoff wank fantasies on, would you? Seen who is 300 posts behind? If you deducted all the posts where I have provided some information, helped people with bits and bobs or made live recordings available to people, you'd have about as many as you have chalked up ;) :evil4:

That photo of Condoleeza Rice looking like she is pretending to crush somebody's head and make a sound affect for it is the funniest thing I've seen on here....and yes I would agree to change my vote "who cares" instead of the "yes" if I could.
