I think the show on tonight (thursday) is just the past winners. Tomorrow at 11:35pm on Channel 4 is the Highlights Package from the Awards Ceremony, and it's only on for just over an hour so I doubt we will see all four tracks on our 2ft tubes. What will they show? Krafty and LWTUA is my guess.

The difference is that, unlike our (not so) young heroes of the day, U2 have considered themselves "godlike" for years and don't feel the need for an award to justify it.

Must confess to a few tears watchin the preview show. Loved the guy from GLC ( I assume, he's from GLC...there can't be TOO many bands of fake newport spides out their), he took the piss out of each and every thing they asked him about.....until the order ( hardly surprisin when u hear the kinda stuff the GLC sample....I mean .....the YMO...CLASSIC). If I may paraphrase......

"beatles is great but they's dead" "New order, why'd u give an award to them.......oh yeah...cos they was makin electronic music when there was no electronic music.....cos they was pushin buttons on a computer when everyone else was still trying to re-thread their guitar strings." And within his little mock-chav voice, I could hear just enough love, enough sheer admiration, to set me off, I sat there and blubbed, feeling SO vindicated. I thought of all the years of name calling at the hands of rock luddites [1], the following years of hearing all the "new" dance music that my infidel mates were getting all excited about while I was thinkin....."kinda sounds like New Order with no talent or hooky". Hearin bands I'm only barely aware of getting all moist of eye about NO was great.......they've fucked up more careers than just mine MUUUUUHAHAHAHHA.

I'm supposed to be doing some basslines for a few house tracks tonight....I suspect they will be VERY lucky to get anything like a BASSline outta me, I think we can all guess how I'll be playing the plank 2n.....high up and singing...the way it should be. PS....the Ch4 station anouncer said NO would be playing "a joy division classic" on the awards show.....so expect LWTUA....and no sign of the others....a shame cos I would like to hear krafty.

well this is weird...

i woke up this morning singing everthing's gone green - a song i haven't heard for years, even though it was always a favourite. all my new order stuff, except crystal, is on original vinyl, and since my deck died a good while ago i haven't listened to much of it for ages

so thru the marvels of p2p i spent the morning getting some of my favourite music ever - including leave me alone which even after twenty-odd years still makes me cry, and blubbed like a good un - soft coont i undoubtedly is...

then by putting new order in me search engine found this place - only to be informed of the god-like recognition they have always deserved....

despite being the oldest swinger in town i feel somewhat vindicated... i spent most of my teenage following new order around britain - they were my favourite band after the clash and of course joy division. but it's hard to overestimate their importance - they turned a generation of guitar obsessed youth onto electronica, helped a nation find its feet. can't wait for the new album - s'looking good

congratulations lads - and a point of information - the nme were the biggest fans of JD and were seldom dismissive of NO - unlike their attitude to so many other bands they built up over the years, only to completely knock em down as soon as they got the chance. i'm sure paul morley still thinks they are the best band ever - even if he does think can't get you out of my head is the ultimate single.... mind u he may be right there

OK, I've checked out MTV2 Europe's page (in my top 10 of worst pages I've ever visited) and it also says the awards are on Saturday 19th at 9pm. It would be 9pm CET i pressume. I actually have a very good friend who has european MTV2 :) and I'm meeting her today and she's recently bought 9 liters of bulgarian cabernet sauvignon. I'll mention her here: Petra.:)

i'd have to trawl the e-damaged memory banks for any real recollections... although listening to the peel session version of 5 8 6 i just had a rush of memory about watching a saturday afternoon bbc2 session [richard skinner??? fuck me how come all this is still in there???] of them playing some of the tracks, on a portable tv in a caravan - i can remember exactly what i was wearing, and thinking, and feeeeling - 18yo, grey combat pants, grey shirt, regulation short back and sides, clutching a copy of neitzsche's beyond good and evil - i'd just read the aphorism 'without music, life would be untenable' and watching them play i knew it to be the truest thing i was ever likely to read...

gigs all over the north - hull town hall, playing in front of a huge organ, barney making the words up as he went along... playing bradford ceasar's palace - such a great name for a truly shithole venue, smelt like a gay toilet, tiny stage, amazing gig - the whole 'europe after the rain' tour - not sure it was called this, but it had that max ernst painting on the tickets... seeing em at the hacienda, thinking it was gonna be the best gig ever, when it turned out to be the pooest - awful, AWFUL sound - but then that was the hac...

above all else, feeling like you were a part of something - a community, a nation of fellow travelers, being at the birth of something you didn't quite get yet but knew was important... surrounded by good-looking boys with shaved necks, not knowing [at that time] why they looked so attractive [it was years before i came out...]

taking a detour in the new car i was supposed to be delivering for renault to find ian curtis's memorial plaque at macc crem... stopping a guy to ask directions, demuring as he asked if i had a late delivery, and feeling righteous and only slightly dishonest when i told him i was visiting my brother... changing the PIN number of my first bank card to 1805 in memory of him... buying every shitty bootleg of JD and NO live shows i could find at record fairs... listening to PC&L, feeling like it was the first real summer of my life travelling alone on a fookin coach from lincoln to glasgow to see them at barrowlands, so excited by the new tracks [off the yet to be released, nay even recorded i reckon, low-life] that i slept outside in a quiet corner of a park, full of sheer and sober delirium...

low-life was the end for me. i moved on[?], smiths, sonic youth, bad seeds, until hip-hop blew my head off, but if it wasn't for NO i'd never have got public enemy, the mondays wouldn't have existed, and acid house would've made no sense at all...

years later, seeing barney on manchester oxford road station platform, realising two things - that i was still too much of an awestruck fan to say hello, and that all those years before i'd obviously fancied the arse off him, cos i still did..

shoot ten years forward and the video for crystal started me laughing and i didn't stop for about a week! they were back, even if 'barney' did look like bobby gillespie's idiot younger 'french' brother...

factory changed my life - an overused expression i know, but the sensibilty, references and attitude it instilled in me have made me who i am. i am now a graphic designer for a living - thanks mostly to the way all the factory covers made me feel - i wanted to do that!!!

isn't this mad - how vivid these things still are? but then the second gig i ever saw was JD in liverpool, the first time i ever visited the city i still live in. gestalt encoding. thank you new order. long may you reign...

I saw that too - 5.30pm on Saturday Live, a BBC TV prog, presented by Richard Skinner. They played Age of Consent (brilliant), In A lonely Place ("faster Steve...faster) and Blue Monday, with Tony Wilson banging the synth keys hard at the end, thinking he's Malcom McLaren.

Memorable for the Barney saying 'Fuck' in a live broadcast on Saturday Afternoon.

Would be better to get it converted to DVD, because raw MPEG doesn't have format issues

Plus most yankee TV's can display full PAL resolution off a DVD but NTSC tape is a nono - it reduces the quality.

The NME awards on channel 4 was probably one of the most important music shows on terrestrial TV for the UK this year - it was amazing to see a great assembly of bands / musicians all in the one place (New Order, Franz Ferdinand, Oasis, Pet Shop Boys, The Bravery, Snow Patrol, Paul McCartney and much much more). Watching the New Order performance the first time round I was bit disappointed with the editing and sound, but watching it a 2nd and 3rd emphasised the fact that New Order are definitely still worth seeing live! PS. does anyone know where Barney learned to dance like that?!

apart from the order contribution this programme was almost completely valueless. repeated shots of cloned bands opening bottles of wine. the impassive faces of legends like the 'bloke from wings'. only new order and sheila peel seemed to be affected or emotionally responsive, all the other award winners wore their lack of personality and importance like a badge of honour. most of the live performances we've seen elsewhere. I ought to add that I hate all awards ceremonies and having made a number of them I can speak with self-satisfied hypocrisy on the subject. apart from the haircuts there's little to distinguish this from the brits. but the thing that's got my hairy goat is the dubbed audience noise. not only when the PSBs took the stage but all throughout the order performance. the same repeated whistling and screaming culled from some stadium recording. what was the point of that? it feels like I've got tinitus now.

and transmission under sir peel's award was a lovely touch. i sometimes find it hard to think if there's ever been a better record made...

well i was glad to see the lads pick up the godlike award,ive scwurmed for years having to watch umpteen nobodys pickup "lifetime achievment awards ect" from various award ceromonies from around the world. nice to see barney on good sarcastic form as usual,and hooky looked genuinly pleased too,even after threatening to kill half the crowd at the brits. only downside was the performance,i was really looking to a polished performance,but all we got was the usuall (these days) whooping ,gurning,screaming and dancing like a spaz antics. people have commented on mr gallagers poe face during the performance,i wish you could have seen mine.
