Danny Tenaglia 1993 remix of 'World'

I'm curious to know what people think here about Danny Tenaglia's remix from 1993 of 'World' that was turned down by New Order - so Danny Tenaglia took Bernard's vocals out and any other specific New Order sounds and he made it into 'Bottom Heavy' which is one of the greatest underground dance records, coming out on Tribal USA in 1993.

I was fortunate enough to hear Tenaglia's original mix when he played it in Manchester at Sankey's Soap in 2002 - it sounded exactly like Bottom Heavy and weird with Sumner's voice over the top! He actually thanked New order for helping launch his international career! ..there was very little difference between the two and I'll always be mesmorised how they could have turned down such an amazing track (according to him it was New Order not WEA, especially as Tenaglia is as progressive/forward thinking in dance as New order have been with technology and sounds etc.

Tenaglia said about it;

" New Order's "World, the price of love." Warner's Dance Dept. LOVED the remixes but, New Order did not. I removed all of their vocals and music and only kept 100% of what I had created all by myself and that's the one that became "BOTTOM HEAVY" on Tribal Records. Once again, THANK YOU NEW ORDER FOR SAYING NO AND PUTTING ME ON THE MAP!"

I've not always been to impressed with some of the remixes that come off New orders albums, especially recently I wonder what others they have turned down..?

I tend to really like Danny Tenaglia mixes, especially his mix of A Guy Called Gerald's "Voodoo Ray" (which has been released), and would love to hear his take on 808 State's "Pacific State" as well (which hasn't).

If anyone's got a copy of either his mix of "Pacific State" or "World", then show your face on here! ;)

Yep, the Voodoo Ray is special,it was done on a low budget in a friends basement in Brooklyn) I think you can get it on the Faith Volume 2 compilation (I paid £35 for the original DMC version on ebay about 5 years ago!)

I'm certain that no one has the 808 State other than DT, I believe he did offer it to Tommy Boy...but that was about 3 years ago...that mix was his closing track at Sankeys Manchester in 2002.

Mmmm.... the DT remix of 'World' I would pay $$$ to have!...I'm sure someone must have this maybe someone connected with the label - this would be a great one to drop and surprise people!....its about time New Order were remixed by someone interesting! ;)...I may go to hear Hookey on Thursday at Turnmills and if I get a chance I'll ask him why they turned it down...Tenaglia also had a Mavis Staples track 'The Voice' turned down by Prince as Prince felt it was too 'electronic' - EXACTLY THE REASON WHY I THOUGHT NEW ORDER WOULD LOVE HIS REMIX OF 'WORLD'! (he had also made the tempo faster from 108 to 122)...also he was asked to remix Michael Jackson's Thriller in 1993 again they loved the remix but it was at the time of the first controversey with children so Epic stopped all Jackson releases and it never saw the light of day although he does play it at Halloween sometimes.

does make you wonder what the process for deciding what gets released. so does New Order always have final say in the end, or have there been disputes? are there any remixes that New order were forced to have?

There exists one of those for-label-in-house-use-only cassettes with the DT mix(es). A person at Warner (US) told me that there are a bunch of rarities and unreleased tracks in Warner's vaults, including the "horrible" DT mixes of World (he may not have used the word "horrible", but the consensus was "there's a reason why some things are left unreleased"...).

There's no recording of that 2002 DT set floating around anywhere?

Have you by any chance any information regarding a World remix by Daniel Abraham that is supposed to exists?

There are no Daniel Abraham remix of "World" - or ay other New Order tracks. This was brought up last year and I contacted Daniel about them. He said he hears that question from time to time, but never did any remixes.

Tony Garcia did some remixes of "World" though.

so new order didn't put him on the map - maybe its a question of taste, danny. he's got plenty of accolades from others, like pet shop boys, so it's not like he wouldn't have made it sooner or later.

but my problem with danny is that while he's a great producer, he's so full of himself. serious ego problem. that doesn't even cover his poor dj-style with the horrid flashlights and talkover.

I recall a Republic-era article in NME/MM that mentioned there was a series of unreleased remixes (including the oft-referred but never heard 'Young Offender' remixes) that were commissioned and submitted. There was a suggestion at the time that they'd be compiled for a Republic Remixed album. I have no doubt that they still lurk in DAT form in a Warner/London vault somewhere.

Either that or they're all in Sultan's bottom drawer.

Although above, the frosty Goat mentions that there was NO content in it - vocals and some other instrument tracks. It possibly wasn't any worse than a few previous NO remixes that have stripped away almost everything but a few vocal samples.

Yep I agree I mean I'm not talking about Tenaglia's personality - and his DJing is very different to his production work anyway - I'm talking about the music.

Whether you like it or not 'Bottom Heavy' was a hugely influencial record, and was groundbreaking in terms of sound and feel and still sounds fresh today in fact it's the record of Tenaglia's 200+ productions that consistently fetches the highest price whenever its on ebay and I was just surprised that with New Order being ferocious advocates of technology and changing sounds that they dropped the remix.

I myself have been a New Order fan for many years, I was also a regular at the Hacienda - one of my best friends was married to Paul Mason throughout his time there, and I love New Order's sound, but I've nearly always been disppointed by the standard of remixes which could have so much potential that spawn from their albums, take their last album for example, to me their was not really one memorable remix IMHO)or maybe I missed something? - but there again I'm only a goat so what does it matter? ...I do love the Steve Silk Hurley mix of 'Fine Time' and the Farley and Heller mixes of 'Regret' but thats about it.

I also agree that with the talent of Tenaglia even though his New Order mix was turned down his talent still surfaced again with the Pet Shop Boys and numerous other mixes shortly afterwards...I think he is probably proud that 'World' became 'Bottom Heavy' because his name is on that rather than it just being a remix...facinating stuff.

I would also love to hear this, or the young offender remixes. Does anyone remember seeing adverts in the press for "The Rest of..." with a list of remixes that turned out to bear no relation to the actual release? I remember Utah Saints and Marmion were both mentioned. There must be loads of commitioned mixes that were deemed of insufficent quality.
