New Order & The bravery

I just heard the Bravery, & I don't know what to say. Does anyone have any opinion about them? I mean I can hear New Order in them, but I don't know about them. I don't really like the vocalist. They also sound like a electronic/emo'ish thing. So are these "new" bands, that site New Order & Joy Division as influences, really that good? I must say I'm not super impressed personally.

I just heard 3 of The Bravery's songs. I have to admit that although I think they are destined to be throw away rock, the songs are catchy as hell. I gave their single "An honest mistake" a few spins and I found myself singing the chorus outloud a few times. They do bring a punk sensibility to what is otherwise a nouveau-electro rock sound. They have a pretty strong image if not a bit cliched with the heavily overdone Adam Ant style eye makeup. There are heavy vintage synth sounds which underline a straight-forward rock/punk delivery. The vocals have a vague distorted and distant feel which I think actually complements the songs. I am looking forward to hearing the entire album. As far as influences go they pretty much site a lot of punk artists as being influential but is not difficult to hear a connection to early New Order in their sound.

Thought the single was ok,but laughed my head off when i saw them. The singer looks like a right bell.

saw them at academy 2 in manchester a couple of week ago,wasn't very impressed myself,they had a couple of decent tunes but i couldn't take them seriosly with the way they look,the teddy boy bass player was pretending to down a bottle of bud between evey song,sad! they finished with a cover of don't change by inxs,at least they never butchered an order song

its all a lame excuse to say you are post punk, and using a NEW ORDER influences to fire the gun, to a certain crowd to say , hey.... we like new order joy d.. we are cool respect us.. fuck that! thats disrespect... out of all bands... MY MUSIC GIVES THE FUCKING RESPECT TO THAT

I've got an unmixed copy of their forthcoming album (friend of a friend is the producer) ... there are some definite new order influences in there. The start of honest mistake is rather blue monday-esque

"Honest mistake" is pretty good, but I don't really hear any New Order in there at all. Sounds more like early Duran Duran.

Thats a good point (refering to the Duran Duran comparison), I've read some stuff on them now. Seen a video or so, an interview. Their seeming more like a slightly educated electric version of punk. Although they have an ok sound, its more like what Joy Division already did you know? & JD did it much more advanced. So are these bands really an advancement, or a slightly modernized classic that doesn't live up to the classics?

Well, the old lyric stands - everything old is new again. Particularly when most people are unaware of the original music that a lot of the new bands are referencing. Maybe I'm just getting old enough to hear all the references, but as long as a song has some value on its own, I'm not really bothered if it swipes from preexisting music, even liberally. It's like manual sampling (but instead of using breaks they're copying aesthetics and sounds).

It is kinda funny that it's happening so frequently now, though, and that a lot of bands are taking (rather obvious) inspiration from a much narrower source. Unfortunately, they're not learning from their heroes and trying to resist (or play around with) genres - they all seem to be more content with affiliating themselves with the "cool" genre.

And as far as I'm concerned, Interpol owe as much (in some cases more) to Galaxie 500 and Kitchens of Distinction as they do Joy Division. Well, apart from the dress shirts and skinny ties, I mean.

I saw that too. Did you notice that after Fenners/Gallagher had finished the penalty outside bit he said "Back to Tim, Helen and Showaddywaddy in the studio". Everyone cracked up except the poor 3 lads from The Bravery who obviously have no idea who Showaddywaddy are.

I think they're ok. Single sounds a lot like Planet Earth by Duran Duran. Trouble is they just look like 2 kids who were heavily into Bauhaus in my school class back in about 1983.

The Bravery and Showaddywaddy are forever linked in my mind now. Under the moon of love....

can't stand them myself. Duran were shite 20 years ago, so I don't see why rehashing it with stupid(er) haircuts is acceptable.

Good to see Hooky slate them on Popworld as well yesterday. good man.

I can't stand them either (The Bravery, that is, not Duran, who I like). They sound like they want to be either Franz Ferdinand or The Killers and are nowhere near as good as either of those bands. As for their singer, he looks the way I imagine Mozza would if he nicked The Libertines' jackets! (Check out the Honest Mistake vid and you'll see what I mean!)

I'm not keen on them either and I think they're being over hyped at the mo.

musically i like them. i cannot stand the lead singer's vox though, ewiewfuhehuiheughe.

Singer appears & sounds to be emo ( I know very general, but what can say?). He doesn't fit. Music is ok, its really just kind of addictive. Probably die off soon, unless they change their ways, and listen to Barny,lol.

Oh, please. One atrocious cover does not a wannabe make. If anything, Orgy wanted to be the next Marilyn Manson.
