Hmmmmm. .... I see what you're getting at - Manchester - being more diverse culturally, that which one cannot deny - is perhaps less intimidating than the ring of "secondary"/satellite towns surrounding it - Oldham, Bolton, Ashton, Wigan, Salford, and my own present "home"(no, make that "prison") Stockport. The latter especially being a no-go-zone at weekends. Whereas in Manchester - you get lots of separate little communities all fighting cheek-by-jowl for attention: the student quarter (Oxford Road), the bohemian quarter (Oldham Street), the gay village (Canal Street), trendy designersville (Castlefield), Chinatown (Faulkner Street), average Sharon & Kevin's (Deansgate/Printworks), and the pure knobhead contingent (Piccadilly Shithole), Stockport (and the other satellites for that matter) is just stereotypically small-town, small-mind, balls and tits naked let-yer-knob-hang-out neanderthal pisshead thuggery - and fucking hideous it is too (see the picture adorning the top of my Fan Club profile for a little taste of what Stockport has to offer - I urge you to check this out!). What has made me laugh recently is Stockport Council's continued attempts to try and apply for the town to become a City. (!!!!!) Gobsmacked, aren't you? Not half as gobsmacked as me! This year is the third consecutive attempt they have made - only for bloody Wolverhampton, Inverness and Brighton/Hove to beat it to the title....
So, granted, it has its diversity, but Manchester can still be a bit on the brutal side, but then, having lived in Satan's Festering Armpit (SFA - Jesus, the same initials as Super Furry Animals!!!) for the last 13 years, I should like to point out that the nauseating clones that populate this place make some of our Manchester brethren seem positively enlightened in comparison.
