I love this song, but I'm not really sure what it's about? Anybody have any insight?

Thanks,

Jonny

This one's been a matter of conjecture for years in these parts Jonny and I don't know that it's ever truly been determined.

There was a longheld theory that it related to JFK's alleged trists with Marilyn Monroe, although the dates in the song don't quite match the historical events.

what i want to know is why stephen hague had to mess with the lyrics in in 1963 '95, the mix on best of would have been ok by me if he hadn't taken out part of the vocals. the arthur baker '95 mix has the full vocals/lyrics, though i prefer the sound of the original in general. sorry for the tangent....

good tangent though cuz on the remix the flow of the lyrics gets fucked up with too many repeats near the end.

do a search for 1963 Meaning and you'll turn up at least 5 threads exactly like this one (except they actually contain discussions about the meaning). Surely this is the most widely speculated about song in their catalogue. Literally hundreds of posts here already about this song. SEARCH AND DESTROY!

It's about Bernard's 7th birthday party, January 4th 1963. His uncle John bought him an Action Man, and Bernard was dismayed that Action Men didn't have penises. This started his lifelong penis fixation.....

oldmonkey, you are definitely on to something. I have wondered about the penis fixation for years and know I think you have hit upon the answer.
