Thieves Like Us

I know it was spotted spray-painted on a wall in New York while they were writing the song, but has anyone ever stopped to think what it means ?

Are we supposed to believe that the "Thieves" are fans of/support/appreciate "us", or that "us" are being thought of as resembling thieves ?

In fact, Barney once admitted that the title was a actually clever anagram of something else.

See if you can work it out.

I thought they got the title from an old movie title.

true, thieves like us is an old movie but i doubt that they got it from there. And how in the hell can "thieves like us" be an anagram of "something else"?? there is no letter u in "something else".

The story I've always heard is the sam as Ahmad, that they got it from an old movie. Just like that other great song with a movie title, "Breakfast at Tiffany's"....:\puke:

I kid, but yes, the story of getting it from a movie title is the one I've run across, so I lean towards that.

Yeah, "Thieves Like Us" is the title of Robert Altman's mid-70s remake of Nic Ray's "They Live By Night". I like Altman, but this one's a bit ponderous. I think it probably DID come from the movie: after all, think "In A Lonely Place", "Cries and Whispers" etc......
