It seems New Order always underestimate one of their song, which always end up as not a single... it happened to each of their album, especially the last ones.

You can differ with my list, but I believe these should have been singles.

Movement: Dreams Never End

Power, Corruption & Lies: Age of Consent

Low-Life: Love Vigilantes

Brotherhood: All Day Long

Technique: Vanishing Point

Republic: Special

Get Ready: Priminive Notion

Waiting For The Sirens' Call: Place your bets already... it will be Turn ;)

The first 2 albums don't count too much due to having no single on them at all, but still... you can figure out most singles that should have never been released instead of those ones.

I think they've had that problem with couple of tracks:

"Vanishing Point" for sure. Especially after the Run2 being so limited because of that court case.

Love Vigilantes is a great song, of course, but I kind of a like the way it's some sort of fan favourite. One obvious reason for this is the fact it wasn't released as a single. On the other hand when looking at Low-life era "The Perfect Kiss" was the right choice as was "Sub-Culture" in my opinion.. but not the way they did it. That horrible mixing. Some sort of lightly extended version of the album version would done it for me.

"Paradise" would have been a great single from Brotherhood. It's dynamic and very catchy and has loads of hit potential. "Angel Dust" and "All Day Long" are as good songs, or even better ones as "Paradise" but not in a hit or a single kind of a way.

Republic is the least favourite New Order album to me (by a mile) still being the most single released album at the same time. I guess that says it all. London Records  :confused2: :skeptic:

Get Ready singles are okay to me. Maybe a cd version of "Someone Like You" with a nice radio-edit or something would have been nice. The 2x12" single is great.

I don't listen any radio stations and they haven't still released WFTSC in here so I won't get that far yet. But how many singles they'r gonna but out from the sirens'? Two are for certain at the time. Maybe another four-singles album like Republic was.. :thumb:

Brutal. Cast adrift on The Beach soundtrack, certainly would have been a good track to announce their return.

Dreams Never End (as good as Ceremony)

Age Of Consent (would have kept the fans more fond of the guitar sound who were running away after hearing the singles)

Love Vigilantes (see above)

Paradise (see above, fantastic tune!)

Mr. Disco (the perfect following to Fine Time)

Vanishing Point (of fookin course, their biggest mistake ever)

Chemical (slightly better than Spooky)

Special (great pop song, I'd have released it in place of Ruined In A Day)

Turn My Way (if they release the song with Ana, they should have with Billy too)

Player In The League (second biggest mistake)

Guilt Is A Useless Emotion (would do well in clubs)

Turn (would do very well in America)

What about leaving it off the album? GR would have been much better if it had included all the B sides in place of garbage like Slow Death.

I'm probably in the minority.. but As it is When it Was, Procession & Dream Attack.  Probably not big sellers (except maybe Dream Attack), but some of my favorites.

oops... Procession was a single.

I've often thought that certain tracks from each album would have made more successful singles, but I take a sort of twisted delight in thinking that fans and those others who bought the albums are privy to some absolute gems that never hit the charts.

It's particularly funny when the BBC or another TV station use a lesser known N.O. album track to promote a programme and the next day, there are several customers in the record stores asking about the track and then buying the appropriate album :)

Dreams Never End - interesting that what should have been one of their first singles would have featured Hooky on vocals.

Age of Consent - its simply a perfect song.

Let's Go (original lyrics or instrumental) - would have been much better than that awful Subculture 12".

1963 - would have loved an extended version of this one.

Dream Attack & Vanishing Point - brilliant tracks that could have benefitted from a remix or two.  Both are much better than Fine Time and Run.

Primitive Notion - This should have been their "welcome back" single.

1981-Movement: Nothing, I have no major quibble with the songs that were released in this time period, I prefer Ceremony and Procession (was it technically a single?) to Dreams Never End and Chosen Time, the only other songs that could have done any damage as Singles.

1983-P.C.L: Blue Monday was definitely the single to release. Age of Consent is one of their classic lost singles. Should have definitely been one, whether or not it could have done anything on the charts is open to debate but it's status as a nearly universal top 10 favorite New Order song warrants single release.

1983: Confusion-God I hate this song, couldn't they have just pulled it back and released Age of Consent, or 5 8 6 instead?

1985: Low Life: I have no idea why The Perfect Kiss did so little business. I suppose it's just one of those songs that is/was before it's time. An absolute classic and deserves inclusion. I would have released Sub Culture as well, and shelved State of the Nation in favor of Love Vigilantees a year later, but that's just me :D .

1986: Brotherhood: BLT was the obvious opening single, and although Im not a huge fan of Paradise, but i do think that it or Angel Dust would have been a nice single off this album. I prefer All Day Long, Werido, and Broken Promise to those songs, but Paradise and Angel Dust sound more radio-friendly.

1987: True Faith/1963: I much prefer 1963, which I rank alongside Age of Consent as New Order's finest moment. However which song is more radio-friendly? I think True Faith may have been, but I do think it's a tragedy what 1963 became only a b-side, should have been released later and Touched could have been released instead of the Blue Monday 1988 abomination.

1988/1989: I never agreed with the singles off of Technique. I think it would have been better to have released Round and Round in late 1988, followed by Mr. Disco or Vanishing Point (I prefer Mr. Disco but appear to be in the minority) followed by a release of Dream Attack during the summer of '89.

1993: Republic: Regret made sense as the opener. Everyone Everywhere would have been nice second single, but maybe that's me. Special needed release, it would the top song off the album, alas, maybe it didn't make too much sense as a single.

2001: Get Ready: Crystal made sense as an opener, I think At Close Range, Someone Like You, or Turn My Way should have been the other ideas. 60 MPH is bad enough as a title, even worse as single.

2004: Sirens: I would have opened with Krafty and Sirens as the Singles, and then considered Guilt or Turn as the third single.

My votes for singles I'd like to have heard and seen:

Movement: Chosen Time

PCL:  torn between Age of Consent and Your Silent Face, so put both on the release

Low-life: Face Up

Brotherhood: Weirdo

Technique: All the Way

Republic: Young Offender

Get Ready: Rock the Shack (just kidding) - actually, Primitive Notion

Sirens' Call: Morning Night and Day

I'd like to take the opportunity to remember to some people that THEY DID RELEASE 1963.... and it DOES feature an extended version :D

But I also believe it would have been an HORRIBLE mistake to leave True Faith as a B-Side as it's probably (minus Blue Monday), their greatest hit on our side of the pond.

I dont know though, that reminds me of the five or six different Blue Monday releases, their seems to be a new single release of it every half decade but I dont take any of it seriously. But yes, it was nice to see such an interesting reimagining of the the song, I loved it, although I would have loved them to do a Round & Round style remix, i never thought New Order managed to top how great those remixes soundes, well, the BLT remixes toped it, but other than that, nothing.

There are definitely plenty of Blue Monday singles.  I personally don't mind them... in fact, I was just getting into New Order about the time of the 1988 release, so it worked well for me.  I heard that release prior to the original!

It was True Faith that introduced me to New Order--I was young and there wasn't a lot else by New Order on the radio... so I definitely second any thoughts that True Faith deserved to be a single.  It got me hooked.... and I'm sure plenty others.  Not their greatest song, but a good introduction for those who weren't listening to alternative/college radio in the US.

Great post! :thumb: Agree with most of what you said. Although I don't hate Confusion, I'd love to have seen 586 as a proper single. AoC, Angel Dust and especially Mr. Disco and Vanishing Point should have been released and remixed. Everyone Everywhere would've been a good single, have always liked that track. Special would've been a great nostalgic single that'd have signaled their (temporary) farewell. Although I like 60 Miles an Hour, I, too, would have enjoyed seeing Turn my Way, Someone Like You, Primitive Notion or even Close Range released as a single. Spot on about Krafty, then Sirens and Guilt. I'm not that fond of Krafty but it has grown on me more and more. Still, I prefer the title track and Guilt. The latter would make an excellent single with all the potential remixes, if done well enough. I do like Turn though, but just feel the other two would be better for the singles market.

Almost.  Promo 12"  singles were sent to radio stations but it didn't catch on.

Unknown Pleasures: Disorder

Closer: Isolation

Movement: Dreams Never End

Power, Corruption & Lies: The Village

Low-Life: Love Vigilantes

Brotherhood: Paradise

Technique: Mr. Disco, Vanishing Point or All the Way

Republic: Young Offender (not great but better than Spooky)

Get Ready: A proper release for Someone Like You

Waiting for the Sirens' Call: Guilt is a Useless Emotion is ripe for remixing

Movement:

Though what I imagine is Hannett's knob-twiddling at the end of 'Chosen Time' is a kind of sonic blemish on a tight track, 'Chosen Time' would've been a good single. It seems though that EGG does it one better; they're related tracks, just as 'Dreams Never End' and 'Ceremony' are, arguably. By the way, the Peel version of 'Dreams Never End', while slower, is better, because Hooky's vocal isn't buried.

PCL:

'Age of Consent'. No contest here. 'The Village' would've been a punchy follow up.

For the rest of the lps, I pretty much agree with the first post, but I feel 'Weirdo' would've been a fine guitar driven track to contrast with BLT.
