I first got into New Order`s music upon listening to P,C&L in1983 but it was a particular radio broadcast of a gig that year that cemented my fandom of them.

Just before Christmas 1983 the Radio 1 evening show broadcasted the Kilkenny April 24th gig.At the age of 15 i had never seen or even heard what they sounded like live.I listened to the show and taped it .Jesus , how shit they sounded live was my first reaction and nearly taped over it straight away.But something stopped me and i was drawn to listen to the tape again.And again .And again.And the more i listened the more i came to love it.And really this tape was how i came to love the personalities of the band and not just the music.This tape revealed to me the piss taking , couldnt give a fuck attitude of New Order( pity its not so evident these days but thats life) which inspired me thru my later youth and beyond.Some of my favourite lines from the gig are Barneys ,during The Village "and when it finally starts the synthesizer will be in tune" and Ceremony "Safe from Top Of The Pops!" .Or was it "straight from Top Of The Pops!"?.And before Ceremony Barneys waffling about guitars.Temptation from this gig was awesome to those young ears and was actually before i heard the studio versions.And Barneys almost if not completely sarcastic "we love people really" after that song.

Anyway ,i just thought i`d try and share a little story of my experiences of getting to know the personalities behing the music!.

Yes, a classic. I know someone who was at that show, and Bernard was rather intoxed! I always thought it was "thank you Top of the Pops"!

as you say its a quality gig, i got sent a cd-r of it a while ago (cheers Pete) and play it at least once a week

do you still have a copy of that tape? make copies sell it as a bootleg

that someone was one of very few people to be at that gig! Thats the one they (Steve & Hooky) were talking about recently in an interview - the promoter put them up in a **** hotel & leisure centre for 5 days and lost a fortune caus so few turned up. & they reckoned they were shite as well - having it so easy for the days before the gig made them sound worse!

Not heard this in years but remember taping it at the time and making a sad cassette cover for it with sticky-back plastic.

Cannae remember whether it was Pete or Ian who sent me this on CDR a couple of year back, but it's a quality gig and must go down as a neworder classic. Bernard drunk at a gig? Surely not;)

The tapes I weened on as a 13 year old were Finsbury Park 6-6-87 and The Sheffield Roxy a couple of days later, which I'd copied from John onto cheap and nasty blank cassettes, you know the one's 5 for £1. Happy memories of playing them gigs over and over after getting home from school.

Was your tape long enough to catch the longest version of Do the Ostrich as the encore !!

If I remember correctly Hooky stayed on stage for ages after with loads of weird Star Trek noises in the background just blasting away on his bass.

Good call squire, neither of me tapes were long enough, I taped both concerts on 60 min tapes, I couldn't afford 90 minute tapes! Honestly!

So I missed a wee bit of Do The Ostrich and even more of Blue Monday on the Finsbury tape. Wasnae till years later I got these on CDR and they still sound brilliant to me when they get played.

Uncanny. Same here. Like you, taped the show and played the tape continuously. Infact, I played it until the reel got knotted around the casette head in the player. It took me ages of delicate prodding, pulling and poking but I managed to untangle it and wind it back into place with the aid of a pencil that fitted perfectly into the holes on the cassette. Needless to say, the next time I played it was its final broadcast :thumbdown: . [ATR has since provided me with a CDR ]

Before this show I'd bought PCL, BM and Confusion. So this Radio 1 'In Concert' introduced me to gems like Ceremony and Temptation. I then bought all their back catalogue including the JD work although I had a tape from a friend of various Closer tracks received in '82 without me realising who NO were or how they were connected to JD.

I still look back at that Kilkenny broadcast as the defining moment that NO became my fave band bar none.

Yes i think it was my defining moment too.It does sound from the recording as though the place wasn`t very full.How big was the hall or whatever they played in?.

And yes it is getting a bit too sentimental.But i have those moments now and then about New Order.Not very um.... New Order- like but oh well.
