question re: SUBSTANCE

Hello, I am new to the board.

Big NO fan... I was listening to some of the albums tonight and a couple things crossed my mind-

-SUBSTANCE is still, in my opinion the greatest compilation they have ever released, and one of the best compilations ever released. But it could sound better. Anyone aware of plans to have it remastered and re-released?

-also: Why has "Subculture" been ignored on all later compilations? That HAS to be one of the best New Order 12" mixes ever! (I don't like the LowLife original nearly as much). Leaving this song off The Best Of and International is a crime!!

In fact, I'd like to see their entire back catalogue remastered and reissued.

A goodly majority of folk are going to disagree with you on the 12" Subculture mix issue, not me though; I loathe the album version.

Agreed. It's ok musically, but Bernard's vocals on the original "Subculture".... well, they're atrocious. His singing ruins the song for me.

In the interest of fairness... ;)

The "Low-life" version of "Sub-culture" absolutely wipes the floor with the 12" version. It lost all its ass AND all its heart on the re-recording, I'd say.

As for Barney's voice being weak - granted. But that's what makes that period of New Order special to me - the combination of precise electronics and naïve vocals.

I 'got into' the Order on the back of the Sub-Culture 12". To me, its a masterpiece.

I do remember at the time that fans decried the 'poppy' orientation of the mix. The music have moved on since then though.
