Back in the day, I used to only have the tape version of Substance's "Perfect Kiss" and when I bought the CD of Substance, I was surprised that it seemed a bit shorter.
Am I wrong about this? Was the CD version's ending a little shorter than the tape version. The tape version's outro seemed to go on forever, which I liked.....The CD seems to cut it a little short...
Now that I think about it...can you buy tapes as an option to an album coming out anymore?
I kind of miss tapes...I loved listening to the second side of the Technique tape when I was in high school before I went to basketball games on the bus....

They dont seem to sell tapes anymore in any of the 'high street' stores. Ive been looking recently for the tape of Substance (ive lost about 4 copies over the years!) but it looks like i'll have to put up with the CD version this time

I think the full 12" version is 8.46 (which is on the tape) Substance CD/Vinyl is something like 8.04
Cannae remember why it was edited, the caller above who said it was due to space on the CD could be right.
Indeed - the Substance Abuse album'ette featured several unfortunate truncations in order to squeeze the biscuits inside the tin, The Kissing Unit one of many.
This has happened subsequently to Substance also.
The genuine 12" vinyls which behest the entire show are becoming less and less common, making the CD commercial equivalents the default version ...
... which should never, ever be right.
Can someone remove this common alley cat. Everyone knows the Perfect Pit is the Kiss of Death.
Subculture on Substance has had about two and a half minutes chopped off it. But no-one seems to mind :D
give me the album version any day!
EDIT - of subculture! full 12" of perfet kiss is the only way to go
Can the Perfect Kiss full 12" be found on a properly sourced CD anywhere? I know it's not available on any of NO's standard CDs, but is it lurking on a compilation somewhere? I've got an MP3 of the full 12" version and the quality is amazing. Either a very good tape transfer or the best vinyl transfer I've ever heard.

Keep the good mp3 with you.

No offical release of the 12" version, such a shame.
Keep the good mp3 with you.
Definitely a keeper. The via-vinyl transfer MP3 of Confusion 12" I have is piss poor.

I had something similar until Retro arrived, as Confusion 12" is on disc 1 "Pop". Say hello on MSN (allymonaco@hotmail.com) if you'd like a decent replacement MP3 ripped from the aforementioned CD.

I don't think you can. I worked near a Tower Records in the summer and before work one day, I went to browse and noticed they had no more tapes. About 6 years ago, I bought the Cure's Disintegration on tape there (and still have it on tape) but saw that no albums were released in tape form anymore.
Also, has anyone here seen Get Ready on tape? I've seen every NO album on tape (and even have Republic, Brotherhood, and Substance on tape) but not Get Ready.
It does exists. But don't expect too many to be around. IIRC, vinyl albums these days are pressed in a handful of 1000's copies. Tapes should be in the same ballpark.
The rare one for GR would be the JP promo CS with a unique sleeve.

Speaking of which, Electronic's Twisted Tenderness was released only on CD and Minidisk only wasn't it? I don't recall any vinyl for that album (bar the Prodigal Son/Make It Happen 10" promos and the Vivid/Late at Night 12" singles) Minidisk never really took off thanks to MP3... So the TT Minidisk is the only New Order related release on that format. I don't really miss tape, but it would be a shame if they stopped doing vinyl. I don't own a turntable but having the big picture sleeves is always cool for any New Order release (Especially Fine Time and Republic)

Depeche had the right idea with their Singles box-sets. Wish NO would do the same. It'd be great to have all the original 12" mixes on CD, plus it'd make them a few quid...
I wonder if the market for "tapes" is becoming like the market for LP's?? They must be rare or even rarer than LP's...Most of my tiny tapes got either eaten up by my Sony Sports tape player or were lost at school, on the bus, or in my house somewhere.
Did NewOrder ever release anything on 8-track? Now that would be novel...I am sure they didn't...since they didn't have any albums with 8 tracks...so, I guess I answered my own question..
'Perfect Kiss' is the 8:02 12" edit on the CD and tape versions of 'Substance'. It was only ever the full 8:46 mix on the original 12" single, and the 'Substance' vinyl, for some reason.
