BIGINOIL wrote: Back on the subject of, you know, the music of New Order, I have something to throw into the Odyssey theory.

I have been thinking about the following lines, the bridge from the song “Waiting for the Siren’s Call”:

How many times must I lose my way, Eh? How many words do I have to say, Eh? What can I do just to make you see, That you're so good for a man like, A man like me

This brings to my mind the tasks that are often set to test the heroes of the great legends. These lines make me think that the singer is attempting to convey the sense of hopelessness the Hero feels when faced with these seemingly impossible tasks. The hero is required to prove his worth in the heroic tradition, and he doesn’t know how to go about it. His cries evoke a heroic call to the gods “What do I have to do? What is the nature of this challenge?”

Interestingly, the last two lines of the bridge contain an unexpected twist. Rather than the expected ‘How can I prove that I’m good enough for you’, the logic is ‘how can I prove that you’re good enough for me’. Surely, if the person being addressed needs to prove her (or, if certain less reputable threads on this forum are to be believed, ‘his’) worth, surely it should be her that's getting lost in the boat. I cannot explain this, and it is putting a bit of a spanner in my theory.

Also, the hero’s choice of language rather spoils the idea that he is addressing the Gods. Although it is popular to add the word “Eh?” to the end of a question, particularly in the area around me and Barney’s home town of Manchester, it’s hardly proper English. I like to think of my heroes making an effort to speak correctly when addressing the all-powerful ones.

Nevertheless, I offer this theory, flawed as it is, as food for thought.

I applaud this insight, Big. I think that the line "How many times must I lose my way" fits particularly well into the intepretation you are giving it.

With respect to the last two lines, I think we need to keep in mind that presumably for a number of reasons, the band did not want to make the mythological parallels overly obvious. To begin with, if it had been clear to the world that this was an album based on an ancient Greek epic poem, that notion might have been expected to have an adverse impact on sales. Plus of course, the fact that the parallels are not entirely on the surface is part of the appeal.

My point is that when one finds lines that fit into the overall structure, the fact that surrounding lines don't fit as well does not seem to me to be a reason for disregarding the lines that do fit.

Good work!

Dare I go a little further and suggest that the concept of losing ones way may remind the listener of that oft-employed device; the labarynth?

I think it would be quite fair to make that suggestion, Big. More than fair. Quite apt in fact.

Keep up the good work, Big!

I'm afraid I'm not entirely pulling my oar today. I have a little catching up to do in the real world. I hope you will understand. I'm confident you will, in fact.

Of course I understand. We all do what we can. Nobody can ask for any more.

Thanks. I knew I could count on you to be understanding.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what DC, Whatuk and the rest of the weekday team make of our progress here.

BTW - Whatuk's avatar description was very similar to mine. Shouldn't I get a prize or something?

Yes, I think perhaps there should be a rule that you have to show up every day or pay some sort of fine.

I'm sure that having to wade through a full weekend's posting is penalty enough.

Yes, that's true. In any event, I look forward to their input on all of this. However, I have a feeling that in the end it's going to be the two of us who will need to carry this project forward.

I see some electioneering will have to commence, Pat.

I'll start emailing some fans who have not voted yet. I'll start with members who haven't even posted. Commence the Profile trawl!

Yes, I had noticed the unhappy trend. I certainly think that campaigning, especially among the less active members who might live in New Jersey and be spending more time translating Ozzy lyrics into French than thinking about bells, would be in order.

However, I suspect, as I've noted before, that at this point the voting may no longer be on the merits but rather an expression of the view that certain less serious types may simply be tired of the subject.

So, in short, I am not really discouraged.

I'd rather be right than President.

less serious TYPES-you ringing my BELL?

I suspect that people are reading the first post of the thread, posting, then going on to read our arguments. However forceful our arguments may be, the electorate have already spoken and changing their minds will have no real effect.

The moral victory will be ours, however.

I'm a bit pissed now. Does it show?

(The English kind of pissed, by the way, not the American sort, where you shout and hit people)

Actually, H, I thought I had made reference to that sound previously. I think of it as "the sound of a monster breathing." The last time I mentioned it, nobody was interested.

-

An alternative description of the sound is waves rocking a boat, or a boat floating through the waves. If there is any attempt to establish a nautical/sailing theme on the album, then this is probably a more likely interpretation than any kind of asthmatic monster (perhaps Charybdis or Scylla). Maybe it signifies continuing the journey, or the odyssey, if you prefer. Or perhaps it's just a cool sound.

I'd opt for the latter, since I've not found New Order to be a band that attempts to put together "concept" albums. There isn't enough lyrical or musical themes continued consistently through the album to suggest an overall theme or unified story (in contrast, consider Tommy or The Wall). But I'm open to hearing anybody's theories as to what the themes and/or story is.

I haven't finished reading through all the posts on this thred yet, so if anyone has already done this, I'll apologize in advance.

Like the wave theory.

Barney said in an interview that sleeping on a boat is cool because it feel like the earth is breathing.

I slept on a boat all of last week and it's like an excited monster.

I'll go for that :thumb:

So did I.

Well, there's lots wrong with it really!

You can't go from page 14 to page 15, have you noticed that, Biggy? So I had to go with that "test" reply in order to see what would happen. Btw, my MSN failed suddenly. :(

You can't see my "Wave theory" post. Which is good, because it was a bit stupid.

A couple of nuggets for those trying to connect WSFTC to Homer's Odyssey

Lyrics from I Told You So:

"It's been ten long years since I've been home...

But I must stay for your pretty face It's a bad reaction I can’t fix You caught me with those feline tricks"

If my memory is correct from reading the book year's ago whilst still a young lad, the Trojan War lasted 10 years and it took Odysseus 10 years to return home. So pick the 10 year period that is most applicable and apply it.

Odysseus was captive for most of the latter 10 years on Calypso's island. Calypso was a beautiful seductive nymph, so maybe her's is the pretty face and feline tricks.

Dracula's Castle - if we grant the above symbolisms (and if are drunk while on the forum you have no inhibitions about granting this), then Dracula's Castle, rather than being about the Cyclops cave is actually sung by Calypso, as she laments the loss of Odysseus' love and her inability to keep him captive on her island.

That said, I'm a skeptic about WFTSC being a concept album based on the Odyssey. The overall theme of the Odyssey, however, is a husband enduring through many trials and tribulations to finally reunite himself with his wife and son, and to retake his throne that has been threatened in his absence by usurpers. If you can demonstrate how WFTSC fits into this theme, you might even convince Bernard that he was actually a medium for Homer when he wrote the lyrics.

Maybe they didn't want to re-do the part about reuniting a man with his wife and son because they already did it on Love Vigilantes?

:D

I can go for that. Turn is about love lost and the title track could have been written about the scenario you describe (certainly the bit about getting back with the woman).

I think we're nearly ready to rest our case. Now, what was our point again?

And, more importantly, whose round is it?

Mine's a large one!

As I noted above, Big, I feel we are clearly correct, and thus am not really bothered if not everyone agrees.

It appears that we have been joined by someone else who is prepared to give this exercise the attention it deserves.

Welcome, ericpear, and thank you very much for your contribution.

I will need to listen to the end of track 1 with your views in mind.

I am well aware that New Order are not thought of as doing concept albums. That's why this view of WFTSC is so interesting.
