It's obvious to me that the twin techno-thumpers "Jetstream" and "GIAUE" are meant to represent the twin dangers of Charybdis (the giant whirlpool) and Scylla (the six-headed she-monster) between which Odysseus must navigate. Track 3 lures the listener into the water, and only careful use of the Skip button and application of earwax can transport him or her safely to the calm respite of "Turn."

Inspired by that breath of fresh air, to be briefly serious, I had been meaning to note the proliferation of "paired tracks" on the album. There are at least four pairs, I think: 1&2, 3&4, 6&7, and 8&9.

Any reactions?

Actually, I think I missed the point early on as far as the bells/no bells debate and it seems to be a discussion on themes and underlying meaning rather than just a sound source. It's definitley an entertaining, interesting, and enlightening read.

From a sound source standpoint, the formula is quite simple:

Clangy sound + Stephen Morris = Synthesizer.

I'd even suspect that you need look no further than his trusty 'ol Kurzweil k2500 to locate the sound. I recall several sounds of the same tibre coming from that synth the last time I played one.

As for symbolism... I graciously bow out of that debate and leave it to speculation, imagination, and personal impressions. I'm off to see if it syncs up to the Wizard of Oz... ;)

*I don't know... 1 sounds more Get Ready, while 2 is more Smiths, but yes they could be paired with a little effort. 3 and 4: definitely yes. 5 and 6: see above. I think one of the best moments of the album is when Morning Night And Day's dark beginning follows I Told You So's dark ending... 7 should have been paired with 1 8 and 9: absolutely yes, the disco hits. 10 and 11: erm, not at all. And by the way the tracks are 11 so there can't be a perfect pairing. I think they made the right choices for those three great pairs, but made a few mistakes, Who's Joe is a filler and so is Working OT, the album should have been opened with Krafty or the title track and closed with Turn.
