Do I hear some female backing vocals on WFTSC? Who's doing them?

Barney's sounding a little shaky in WFTSC? I wondered if he'd struggle, it's a tough one to nail. Great to hear it live though, I'm getting seriously jealous of you ticket-holders now.

Bernard did indeed sound shakey. Fucked up a lyric, as usual and during HNWYD he let out a little yelp! I'm excited to see them but listening to those tracks should drive home the point that New Order absolutely suck when they play live. It may be exciting to be there and watch them, but their ability to perform their songs is worse than some 3rd rate Hotel circuit band. Hey Now sounds more like Brit-Pop 10 years too late than it does on the record. Hopefully they'll have a few more rehearsals under their belt. It will still be fun but I think Hooky and Morris should get another synth player and tour without Bernard. He really is an awful performer.

He had to adjust his guitar at the end of every track. :skeptic: He even broke a string in the middle of the 2nd take of Regret and had to start a 3rd take with another guitar. But Barney keep his cool :thumb:

He sounds servicable on WFTSC and Hey Now... On Krafty he sounds awful. Well, he's never been so great live, has he? It really exposes his shaky voice - I've always wondered when they record in studio, how much work it is for him to do the vocals, how much he has to go syllable by syllable - seeing how when he tries to sing the whole songs at once, he usually sounds amatuerish at best.

Still, thanks to Lonely Place for sharing, its cool to hear this stuff.

Well singing AND playing at the same time isn't always that easy live, where in the studio you don't have/need to!

Barney always sounds like this when he sings "new" songs. Rehearse and get confidence. Can't wait to see they doing this in Chicago.

A huge thank you! :thumb: I really like this performance, I think there's an improvement from the NME Awards, a lot of energy, Phil and Hooky sound great. Only mild disappointment is Bernard's taped voice for the chorus of Krafty, maybe Hooky and Phil could have sung those parts...

On Krafty, some keyboard parts were taped too. Phil can't play together guitar and keyboard

I can tolerate better taped female backing vocals as the singer is not there, but to hear Bernard sing live and taped at the same time is ridiculous. BTW I'm even more convinced it's Gillian on the title track!

Yeah, I think its Gillian too. I want to believe it's her. She really needs to be there.

It's obvious that Bernard's voice is enhanced in studio these days.

I hate to admit, but time goes by, and Bernard's voice isn't getting better... you have the raw version right now... I was a bit shocked when I heard it at the NME awards.

I've seen worst (W. Axl Rose for instance, they did a performance at the MTV awards, that was awful!!), but I'm not sure Bernard will be able to keep touring for a long time...

Not that I mind, but he sounds vulnerable and they he shouts and you are very surprised by the strenght of his voice... :eek3:

Barney does seem a bit uncomfortable, but with more practice "This time I'll get it right" in CHICAGO. I like how there's more bass sequencer, synth up in the mix too. :thumb: Can't fuckin' wait!!

Barneys knocking on 50. The constant touring, drink, drugs, etc have obviously taken their toll. Just like the singer out of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Barney pronounces "friend" as "fwend". He cant sing like he could in 89, when he had tuiton. He is possibly the worse singer live. Just make sure youre mashed at a NO gig and you wont care. But buy the CD/DVD (ie Glastonbury 1987 and its embarrassing to listen to). So was TFI in 1999!!!!

im getting the tracks from the web master at the moment ...but this souunds like a band desperate for the last buck after a poor album(my opinion)im saying this after reading all the posts about new orders coming gigs that are trans continental..barneys hatred of touring and the dreaded autocue..plus i cant afford the gig in hyde park(whats wrong with playing finsbury again...the last one there was amazing and affordable)and the rain stopped when they started to play...a sign i tell you...bye ...phil

A live rougher edge adds even more to this future classic!

Nice to hear thse tracks live, but the fact Bernard sings so off-key is getting embarassing to even come out as a New Order fan... gosh!

He never was a great singer from the start, by the way... he always sounded good on records because of the magic being worked in studio.

Maybe he should use what many other singers are using live now -- the tool that can turn bad singers into "not-so-bad" singers by reajusting their voice on key.

Can't recall what's it called...

And by the way, I hate throwing tomatoes at Bernard because I love thr guy.

I forget the name as well, but I was reading in the paper, that Cher uses 19 of these machines in her cercert to sound good, Shania Twain uses 2. Hilary Duff uses it. They named a few more people as well.

I like the recordings. I'm sure it will sound better live in person, but on recordings he normally sounds that way.

That sounded better when I was in the audience, (except for Regret) even if the voice was a bit covered by the guitars.

I told you, he just has a weaker voice now, that's it... nothing bad with it, but you just feel bad because you would like everything to go like it was before.

But Bernard has always been aweful live, so that's not the case... we all are aware of that, and that's part of the experience ;)

Also, from reading the press release, Bernard was sure to fook up WFTSC with his vocals, I believe he got it right on the album, but live, it can be another story.

However if I were them, I'd hire musicians rather than playing tapes... but that's my take.

The hardware version is the Antares ATR-1, otherwise known as Auto-Tune. While vocal tuning is not anything new and has been done for ages using various gadgets and techniques, the Auto-Tune process just made it easier. The software version is pretty much common place is most studios.

Also, keep in mind that his vocals that you hear on the album are a result of numerous takes and edits to give you the best sounding result. It's just the way you make a record...

This is the thing that gets me with Barney. He can sing reasonably well in the studio. But that's understanding as he isn't playing live infront of a crowd. I disagree that his voice is "enhanced" on the actual recordings. He's just more at ease and prepared for the vocal session. But when we hear him live I doubt he really puts much thought into it and just gets up and sings.

I read in that True Faith article that most the time Bernard would record in the studio, he would have to get fairly pissed so he wouldn't think about messing up. That's why I believe that on most of NO's songs he has had a few drinks.

Cause the more you try and sing, and think about it, the more you're going to mess up and sound unnatural. But after a fair amount of alcohol (just the right amount, not over the top) this feeling is gone therefor helping you a great deal.

Also a singer can go up to at least ten ten takes before finding the best recording which will be used on the album. I'm sure Barney can still sing reasonably well, WFTSC is the proof, and I seriously doubt his voice was enhanced on that.

It does make you want to say "Get it together for fuck sake" to him though when he sings live, but that's what happens when you are quite a private/shy person and a lot of people are starring right at you as you sing.

He's doing well if he does it in one take.

Let's face it, he is doing well. It's well documented how hard he finds it, but he's been at the top of his game for years.

He's got a boat, and the best fans in the world. Some of them are even LADIES.

What more could he want?

Thanks for the links - it is nice to hear them play the new songs live. :thumb: :D

I'm hoping that by the time they play Chicago they've got the tracks nailed down tight. Musically, they sounded good, but Bernard did seem to struggle with the singing.

Perhaps they just plug in a BarneyBot in the studio to get the lyrics. He sounded like he was struggling with the singing in a way I've not noticed in any other live shows I've heard. Perhaps he's getting a little out of shape, which may mean fewer yelps at the live shows.

The track listing someone put up had Regret in the set and also as an encore - is this correct? Been only to one show that had a band do this, and it seemed bizarre.

Yes, they did a second take of Regret & LWTUA - to get it right, not really an encore

Love Will Tear Us Apart

This is take 2 of LWTUA and the last song of the session. Take 1 sounded better and perfect to me but wasn't dedicated to Ian. During the break, someone may tell them that it would be nice to dedicate the Joy Division track to Ian.

Phil is full time on keyboard.

Hooky helps Barney on vocal during the chorus. EUPHORIC RECALL was written on the Hooky bass amp. After the 2 chorus and during the drum break at 2'24, Hooky put his bass handle in the ass of the cameraman who filmed Stephen. The cameraman was very surprised about that  We can see that on the video :thumb:

Stephen has a nice t-shirt with an alien from the 80's video game Space Invader and made a very good job on drums :thumb:

Barney's voice is warm now and he sing better. But LWTUA is easier to sing too. (Ian made the voice line)

The bass at the end of the song (4'01) was very impressive in the studio, but I can't found it again on the broadcast.

See you tomorrow See you next week See you next year

Can we get any more Canal tracks up? Any Video? Just wondered.

I know I shouldn't moan really. It's great that they're finally playing a few Joy Division songs (although they should play the excellent revamp of Isolation and Heart & Soul more often). But the present version of LWTUA sounds a bit too 'nice', light and sing-a-long jolly. Why can't they play it more like the record. I think it's mainly down to Steve adopting a very basic drum pattern, by his standards anyway. It's nothing like the stunning drum style on the record. It completely dictates the mood of the song and the current version kind of loses it's urgency.

different stokes then. the whistleing is obnoxious and ruins the song for me. My loss, i suppose. In fact, all the new songs performed were very, very shaky at best and complete failures at worst. Hooky, Steve and Phil seem to be able to handle playing live but Bernard is a total mess on stage. I can understand why Bernard doesn't enjoy performing on stage. He seems so nervous and unsure of himself, like an awkward teenager who finds solace in cream filled doughnuts. I wish i could have seen them back in the early/mid eighties, before Ecstasy ruined his stage presence.

Maybe ecstasy was Barneys stage presence in the 80's? Cos now he sounds shot to f*ck. Jetstream is embarrassing at best. The whistles are naff. He really should have seen someone and got advice about performing. These summer gigs could finish new order off! How tragic an end that would be,

Barney's always been a headcase, and now the whistles along with his trademark yelps make him seem like a senile old man with Tourette's. And, yet somehow I don't mind this at all.
