(Sarcastic) Holiday Movies

Oops, sorry about that, anyway here's a nice list to take your mind off the holidays (or make them more bearable)

1. Scrooged (1988)- One of my favorites. Overdone? Yes. Crappy in parts? Sure, I'll grant you that, but Bill Murray kicks butt in this one.

2. The Thing (1982)- Gory as hell, but with a nice winter setting it's easy to imagine the alien running havoc with Santa's workshop just as easily

3. Star Wars (1977)-Nothing to do with Christmas, but a classic well worth trotting out for old times sake

4. High Fidelity (2000)- Pop music obsessives, this is essential viewing

5. Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) or Meaning of Life (1983)-Perhaps you've heard of these...

i'd have to add Planes, Trains and Automobiles to the list. great holiday movie. by the way, i've just seen the Royal Tenenbaums and it's fucking hysterical.

Planes, Trains..is quite possibly the truest depiction of what hell the holidays can be, and it makes me miss John Candy just that much more.

I loved Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, so I'd love to catch the Royal Tennebaums (doubt it'd play at the local "teen-audiance-condesention theater", but I plan to drive a long way for it anyway...)

Last night I watched the Graduate, my all time favorite film. Dustin Hoffman's never been better, imo

The story from National Lampoon magazine that inspired the movie is far funnier than the flick. After all of the stress that the Griswolds experience with the holidays (problems with the lights, cranky relatives, the cat who burns after touching a live wire, an exchange student from a foreign country who steals money and a car from the family and then crashes into a police car while getting away from the house, etc,), the whole family is gathered on the front lawn bickering over who is responsible for the whole mess they find themselves in.

Suddenly, Clark's wife notices a bright light in the sky and tells everyone to look up it. She thinks it might be the very same bright light that the 3 wise men saw 2,000 years ago, and that now is a good time to put away our differences for now, and possibly for ever. All of the assembled then sing some carol, and some sort of affection toward the others is felt by all.

The last line is delivered by one of the policemen, who tells her "Lady, that ain't no light, it's an airplane!"

Tim Burton's Nightmare before Christmas is my favourite.

Just had a couple of those strong Belgian beers and watched the Christmas episode of Bottom.....Bloody Merry Christmas!! The festive season isn't so bad after all

i wish the wizard of oz was on this year.

I like the flying monkeys alright (used to scare me shitless when I was a kid) but otherwise I don't care for that one much

i think it's so cool! i could never get bored of watching it, though it is a bit scary in places. my friends all say i remind them of a munchkin - i don't know if that's a compliment or not!

The scariest movies are the Freddy/Jason variety, though after a while it's so predictable you have to laugh. Probably the grossest one would be The Thing, that one I had to watch between my fingers at only in parts and i still had nightmares. Might be a cool DVD, though...

happy movies are so much better than scary movies. i really can't see the attraction of watching people be killed in horrible ways, or the way some films mess with your mind.

i got the video of shrek for christmas - it's such a wicked film!!

Actually when I'm not behind my couch cringing at the gore onscreen, i can see the appeal of Horror flicks. You have characters who are often representations of good, evil, or just plain incompetence, and after a while the bad and incompetent ones get theirs, while the good live (or barely survive). It's also an outlet for aggresive or violent tendencies we all have, that way we don't go around chopping up people with an ax. We have Jason of Friday the 13th to do it for us. Overall, while a wimp on the most part, I can appreciate the occassional gore flick. Some of my faves: Aliens, Blair Witch (not scared by that one at ALL, though my little brother may be warped for life after seeing it), and Halloween (the first one)

i saw "how high" last night with method man and redman and then went to midnight mass. do you want me to tell you which was more ridiculous and full of shit, not to mention a complete waste of time? nothing gets you in the spirit like some queer priest begging for money during service. alter boys indeed. more like bent-over-the alter boys. the hypocracy in church boggles the mind. Spalding Gray has a funny cameo in How High if there are any fans out there.

taboo - i probably don't see the attraction of horror films because i have no aggression to let out - i'm a little angel.....really.

I remember back at USc turning the TV to Bravo, they had the movie on where he's delivering a monologue with a huge book infront of him for 90 minutes. I sat there transfixed by the whole thing, it was just a guy sitting infront of a desk staring at a camera but there was far more drama than in most Hollywood flicks. So yes, i like Spalding Gray, what's he doing in a Hollywood flick though?
