The best selling 12 inch of all time.

"The best selling 12 inch of all time". I keep seeing this mentioned a lot in interviews lately. I'd kind of taken it for granted for years. It was a cool fact in the eighties but why does it still keep getting mentioned ? Does it mean anything to anybody today, given the majority buy cd singles (if at all). I feel pretty sure that it will never be outsold. Unless some artist comes up with some earth-shatteringly innovative AND commercial dance anthem and insists it's only released on 12 inch vinyl. It will never ever have the competition, will it.

As an aside what are the best ever selling 7", 10", cd single and dvd single of all time ? Are New Order in the Guiness Book of Records, I've never bothered to look.

Boy am I fed up with hearing that one! How many more times are they gonna tell us that. First it was 2p, then it was 5p. I think last time Hooky said it was £12.50 lost on every copy.

NO made money from BM but Factory lost cash. The record was in profit until NO's publishing rights were taken into account, then the record lost money ( but only after paying out to NO)

And don't forget the rising from the ashes part.

Exactly right. If you believe Wilson's figures then each copy made 2p which was split 50/50 between band and record company. Factory then had to pay 5p publishing royalty, so net loss to them was 4p. I hope New Order spent the 1p they got from each sale wisely...

This is gettting ugly...another thread taking a turn for the worst.

I'm glad BM is the best selling 12" of all time. Who cares if it may not be outsold due to other mediums.

You should all go buy one just to keep that record in the spot.

I find it more important that the record was ahead of it's time and paved the way to most of the dance records you hear today. Remember it came out in what?? 83?? Name a record that sounded like it that year...It was a breakthrough even though it was an experiment.

I know we all hate it now but you gotta respect what it did for those after.
