When did he change the pitch of his voice? I read recently that he was singing in the wrong key for years and was much more comfortable when he dropped it down an octave or two, sounds to me like it was around the lowlife period
He really squeals his way through the tracks on that album!

yeah, around 86. i´ve got an interview by that time (Royal Albert Hall gig) where he says he started singing lessons by that time, and that he found out he could do a lot more with his voice with much less effort. and thinking about it from that time on most of the songs were written in a range from A to C.

John Robie is the man responsible for changing the key, I believe. Neil Tennant during early "Electronic" helped convince him to get singing lessons.

Big mistakes in my book. I liked his early singing style. Then again I also like what he did between 89-93.
Thought it was particularly noticeable in Turn, hard to reconcile those vocals with the likes of the original Blue Monday.
Maybe Turn is Barney's vocal equivalent of U2's Lemon.

I read somewhere (years ago) that Barney had singing lessons for the Technique sessions. This makes sense as its flawless vocally.
Procession made back in 82 is (IMO) his best vocals from their early work.

A minor third's not that big. You'd think he could try to sing a tritone.
You can tell that Bernard is more relaxed with his voice after 86 but I actually like some of that high pitch stuff on low-life.
