I always wonder if this is just a coincidence: The Pet Shop Boys released a track called "Young Offender" on their album "Very" in the same year as N.O. did on "Republic" (1993). Both Albums were produced by Stephen Hague... Is it a coincidence or is it a joke for insiders? Anyone thought about that? Anyone heard about something?
Perhaps it was a collective idea after Barney, Neil Tennant and Stephen Hague spent a drunken night in jail or something like that

I've always wondered that too... I remember when Republic came out, like a few months afer the PSP version was out, I wondered how they so quickly had covered it!
Maybe it is some Brit phrase in vogue at the time???
Wasn't there some law outlawing gay sex under the age of 18 passed around 1992 or something in England???
Does that have something to do with it?

Republic came first.
As I understand it, Regret and Young Offender were the first 2 tracks worked on for Republic as they both feature a pre-production credit for Pascal Gabriel (who was involved before Stephen Hague was brought on board). Neil Tennant must have got wind of the title/track and thought "their album's tied up in legal disputes, I may as well nick that title for the PSB's".
but why would Neil Tennent rip off the title if he already knew of NO version? I dont think he wants any legal disputes.
