Hello everyone!

My partner is a deaf/blind teacher, and he was asking if anyone knew what the girl in the True Faith is signing??? He knows American Sign Language, but not the British Sign Language, so he can't make it out...

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers! Jeff Delaware, USA

I've always been told she was actually making the signs for the lyrics of the song.

Can't know that for sure.

I thought it was all abstract stuff, seemed so to me with all of the balancing triangles on balls etc..

Dont think anyone knows what the video means.. even the director ;)

Yup, Seb's right, it is the lyrics to the song.

Found this on an old Ceremony post from 1997:

"Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 11:04:40 +0500 From: "Amjad Awan" Subject: Fw: (Fac33) Replies..;

For the "TF" vid., she is signing to the verse: "I used to think that the day would never come..." and also, "When I was a very small boy...." I know a little sign language. :)

I was hoping she was explaining why her and the others were wearing silly outfits and jumping about like loons!

Or perhaps she was signing, i feel like a prize pillock wearing this! :evil4:

It's Salfordian Uninversal Sign Language. What she is signing is "Buy our single. We need your money."

Actually, its a visual parody of the E-induced mania in the hacienda. Moving from the street to the dancefloor. Also, the characters fighting at the end all symbolically represent the members of New Order and Tony Wilson - all the fighting, however, is based on actual incidents.

I heard it was a secret message to Tony Wilson:

I am fluent in BSL (British Sign Language) and SSE (Sign Supported English).

I haven't seen the vid for eons so couldn't say without watching it. If its on line anywhere I could tell you. Incidentally there are different signs for for the same words dependoing on where you live. It is the same as our accent.

Cheers

does that mean that there are special signs for the tilde and the umlaut?

Each word has it's own sign so there would be no need for an accent in the word café.

What you have to remember is a sentence is structured in a different way to spoken english. The structure is more like french. You convey meaning rather than announce each word.

Finger spelling is only used for things that have no sign.

You don't even spell your name out normally, you are given a sign name. This is something that is obvious to you as a person, for example if you are a tall man named Dave and people were talking about you they would do the sign for tall and mouth your name at the same time.

Clear as mud eh
