Origins of "Murder" explained by New Order

I bought a copy of a UK magazine called "Rip & Burn" today, it has a feature on New Order where readers text their questions in for the band to answer, this is one of them:

Reader: The track Murder seemed out of place when it was released, coming after Thieves Like Us and before Lowlife. Whose idea was it?

Bernard: Occasionally through the decades me and Hooky swap instruments and i play bass and he plays guitar. We did it on Atrocity Exhibition on Closer. And Murder was another one. We'd been taking acid and we used samples from different films.

Stephen: Bits of Caligula, 2001:A Space Odyssey. It was part of Power Corruption & Lies but you could only have 45 minutes on a vinyl LP in those days so something had to go and Murder was it. That's why it says on the run out grooves "Where Is Murder". We did the 12-inch of Thieves Like Us and stuck it on the b-side. So it was a bit old when we put it out. John Peel played it and said "best thing they've done in a long time"

Bernard: Apparently its Matt Dillon's favourite record of all time.

What about Blue Monday?

There was a story on the radio once (so it must be true) that the band were so gone on acid during the recording of Blue Monday that the Engineer kicked them out of the studio and sent them across the street to a pub so he could try and fish his work on the track.

Not sure if it's true, but it's a nice bit of gossip.

Yes he said it was so fast, almost to recreate under normal circumstances.

LOL...the thought of the engineer kicking them out of the studio is truly hysterical, i just imagine this guy shaking his head in disbelief as barney could barely stand straight with hooky and morris just laughing

Its English slang for beer. When you come to england and try out one of our quaint traditional drinking establishments for the first time its traditional to shout at the top of your voice "Can someone buy me some charlie?"

Charlie is cocaine. Would make sense that THAT was what they were out of their heads on in the late 80's-early 90's.

I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately New Order have never played Murder live, but what an opener it would be.
