Please tell me the secrets behind Hooky's watery bass, Bernie's chaotic jangle, Morris' vicious drum kit, and Gililan's keyboard noodlings (and her stints as backup guitar!)
The new guy can chime in with his rig too if he likes.
A couple of those live vids show a yamaha solidbody dual cutaway electric guitar...well, i'd love to know what stompboxes are used, etc! I'd even like to know more about Hooky's cheesy electric drumpad action, and Bernie's early sequencer work, thanks!

That's no Yamaha cutaway, it is either a Gibson 335 or 330.....
Bernard Sumner uses either a Gibson 335 or SG at present.
Peter Hook uses a pair of Eccleshall 335 basses, with a Shergold Marathon 6-string bass and a MusicMan Stingray 5-string.
Phil Cunningham uses a Gibson Les Paul Studio

The secret is in the drugs.
Steve plays a Roland V-Drum set... it looks like he has an acoustic Yamaha bass drum in the setup, but i think there is some kind of trigger system mounted to the batter side head where the bass drum pedal's beater hits. in the 316 dvd, i think the acoustic bass drum and 2 "real" cymbals were just for show, since i never saw him hit any of them! (there's a stand-alone bass drum trigger right next to the acoustic bass drum).
Phil plays a Gibson Les Paul Custom into a Vox AC30. it looks like he has quite a lot of effects pedals too. he also plays a Roland XP-80 synth, which i think is actually used as a MIDI controller to control a computer with the sound patches already queued up to go for each song.
Barney plays the Gibson 335 or Gibson SG into some kind of effect processor into Vox AC30s as well.
Hooky plays Eccleshall 4-string basses and Shergold 6-string basses into an effects rack (with a footswitch control board) into a very large Ampeg bass rig.
Hooky's signature bass sound is a combination of his personal skill and style, the basses he plays, and some chorus and reverb/delay effects... from what i've read the chrous effect is from some kind of Electro-Harmonix pedal.

I was wondering about this the other day, whilst watching the 3:16 DVD. It's definitely an XP-80 which is a workstation (it features a lot of sounds, drums and a sequencer as well). It's possible they've got a lot of the older sounds sampled and the XP is MIDId to a rack of samplers and synth modules backstage so as to keep things to tidy out front. I quite liked Gillian's tech-heavy setup in the past, especially the ridiculous practice of having to have two full Prophet Fives and two Polysequencers so they could be loading the sequences for one song while she played the other!
That lead onto the Voyetra jobbie (as seen in The Perfect Kiss video) and then they went Yamaha mad. Since 98 it's all slimmed-down a lot.

Steve's electronic set has grown to be quite massive now... almost to the level of the later JD and early NO days.

It's a very *odd* guitar - it looks exactly like 335, but it has a somewhat strange tailpiece, usually 335s don't have a tailpiece like that. And it looks to me that switch is in a different place than in regular 335s. I doubt that it's a 330, as 330 is a completely hollow, I'm not quite sure if it suits rock/pop music. And it was discontinued in the beginning of the 70s, so unless Bernard is a vintage guitar freak, it's unlikely that it's a 330.
I'm almost certain the guitar Barney is using lately is a Gibson 330 with P90 pickups and a teaburst as opposed to sunburst finish... It joins the neck at the 15th as opposed to the 19th fret... As well the pickups on the guitar appear to be P90's which are on 330's as opposed to 335's.
I remember Johnny Marr saying that if he could only own one guitar it would be a Gibson 330 so I have a feeling that Bernard might have taken those words to heart. A
As far as it not being a "pop" guitar, the Gibson 330 is used in a lot of pop music (Go-Betweens, Smiths, etc) since it's such a bright sounding guitar... basically it's Gibson's version of an Epiphone Casino which is one of the ultimate "pop" guitars.
I also think that Phil Cunningham plays a white standard Fender telecaster as well as the other guitars mentioned...

330s were made like that until 1969, after that they were made with a full length neck. So Bernard does have a piece of history :) Btw, I think he's using either GT-6 or GT-8.
i think hooky's actually upgraded to a Roland SPD-20 from what i recall from the German dance music awards...

It's actually an SG X model, discontinued in '98 I think. Very good and very rare guitar. Only a bridge pickup with two pots and no switch, if I'm not mistaken.

It looks to me too as 360/12. Lovely guitar, tho I prefer 335 to it. I was very surprised to see Phil playing it, if I remember correctly, he played LP before? And somebody pls tell me that he didn't play Angus Young model on TOTP...

i think Barney's SG is probably a vintage Gibson SG Jr.... it has a P-90 pickup rather than a humbucker like the SG-X model from the 90s.

Yes, it looks that way... These days, you can't even trust people from Gibson... 
Just found a new interview in Remix magazine which mentions the Barney's use of Cubase for recording/sequencing, a Roland XV5080, and a Doepfer MS-404 in his home studio to work out some of the demos for WFTSC. Steve composed the programmed beat for Krafty using the software "Reason." John Leckie also mentions the addition of a Doepfer A-100 Modular synthesizer at one point for new sounds. I'd even go so far as to ID it as the synth playing the "wobbly bit" sound in Krafty. I've scanned the interview and sent it to Nic so maybe he'll be able to post it soon.
