Well, its the last day of the year, I should be at home sprucing myself up for tonight's heavy boozing session...AND I'M AT WORK!!!! Still, my boss is out, so I can catch up on all the threads I've missed out on while I've been away.

Had a funny turn this morning - woke up in the early hours to a snow covered street and HAD to listen to Joy Division -Atmosphere always makes me think of Christmas time. Does this make me warped?!

Any time of the year is a good time to listen to Atmosphere;)

Atmosphere's got that weird 'shimmery' (can't think of another word to describe it) background noise through it, which always reminded me of Xmas. Or winter at the very least.

I always picture the famous shots of Ian et al on a bridge in snowy Manchester sometime in early 79 when I hear Atmos. A perfect Xmas song, unusually enough :xmas:

I thinks it's those cascading bell-like sounds (does anybody know what those are called? Chime bells? chinese bells? wind chimes or summat?) that keep coming in during the keyboard breaks isn't it? That's what makes it sound Christmasy I suppose.... great tune though - that and Decades are my two fave Joy Div songs of all time.

The 12" sleeve lends itself to Christmas as well - but I must agree that the shimmery keyboard etc gives it a really spine-tingling feel on record. Wish they wouldn't butcher it live !!

I had a chance to buy the Atmos 12 inch way back, but this was before I'd really got into JD, so shame on me

Oh no, you're not warped. The 12" sleeve helps when thinking of Christmas and winter, but the music absolutely drives the point home. Can still remember the first time I heard it, and I just muttered to myself,"Damn...", and then lifted the needle to play it again and again on a summer day.

If i am not mistaken they are chimes, Todd , but to be really sure i could ask the drumteacher at the musikschool where i work as a concierge. But i am certain there is somebody out there who can also give us theanswer. And Decades, yes you're so right. I find it hard to express my feelings to that song in my own Dutch languaga let alone trying in English:nod:
