do you think NO would benefit from having additional musicians on stage with them live?

it's a hot topic... NO have always relied on sequencers in the past, but lately some argue that they leave too much work to the technology. i think that having an extra keyboard player and maybe an extra percussion player for the live gigs would be fine. many professional bands bring friends on tour with them to help fill out the live sound... i don't see why NO can't do the same.

Nah, too Depeche Mode for my taste....they should def. go back to sequencers (it's 2005, i'm sure they are more reliable than Voyetras by now!!) instead of taped/triggered samples.

They've already had additional musicians on stage. Phil (he was an additional musician for a while), Billy Corgan, and Dawn. They've always had the classic 'four' lineup, why mess with that? Getting extra members in is a bit Depeche Mode for my liking.

still, it's kinda creepy to have taped backup vocals....I'd prefer NO BACKUP vocals to the tapes

I think they have one too many musicians onstage with them now! This is a band who has always made the most of the least, so why add more proficiency to a formula that doesnt respond to it? These shows would be far more exciting if they got the Chems to do a live mix of many of their songs and get rid of that heinous session rocker who looks SO wrong up there posing and posturing in positions which would get him kicked out of every other self respecting postpunk band in a second...

The rawer the better in my book, I loved them as a four peice, no backing singer, cheap lighting, barney glued to the spot like a rabbit in headlights, gear breaking down and hooky swearing and snarling at the audience. It may not be as polished, but it's a damn sight more characteristic, if I wanted to hear perfect renditions of the songs I'd put the CD on.

Sack dawn and phil, get gill back, bring back the old sequencers, tempremental analogue synths and Emulator 2 samplers.

BTY, they used sampled/taped backing vocals back on round & round, I think that was the first occasion but could be wrong.

"Hired guns" are an early symptom of a band turning to crap.

If you can drag around two or three backup singers on tour, you're too big.

I have to disagree with the majority. I saw a PSB video of them performing in Rio with no backing band, but with sequencers and "canned" instrumentation instead. But, after watching part of their special on TOTP2 with them playing West End Girls with a backing band, I thought they sounded better. New Order's different, considering they don't solely rely on synths and sequencers, but the sound seemed better with backing musicians.

Well, there are a lot of us hardcore DM fans that would like to see DM go back that way as well.

New Order are fine the way they are.

personally id like to see new order do a show backed up by a full orchestra,a well rehereased no whooping gurnining fucking about show,to do justice to some of their classics. atmosphere,ysf,all day long,this time of night,and fucking gulp,i dare say even shellshock may do well under them circumstances. cmon im sure loads of us would like to see an unplugged or orchestread up new order session.

As long as it's not like Metallica's "S&M." The orchestrations for some of those songs weren't bad, but others just made the songs muddled.

dare i say it... duran duran put on a pretty neat performance on MTV Unplugged a few years ago, with a host of backing musicians helping them out. i'm sure if NO had the time and patience to rehearse with a full ensemble, they could put on a really spectacular show.

No other musicians. Heck they'd have to use them then on everything wouldn't they. Hearing Dawn warble on True Faith was almost too much for me already (511).

no, just because you have the musicians there doesn't mean you'd have to use them. having an extra keyboard player or a string section doesn't necessarilly mean that they have to play on every song. same goes for backing vocals. dawn zee didn't sing on every song at finnsbury park back in 2002.

Jeff, they did play the taped backing vocals during JET at Oakland.

They absolutely need someone to play synths. Phil might be nice and all but he's a dime-a-dozen guitar player. There are homeless guys who play on the sidewalks in Seattle who can play as good, if not better than Phil. Plus it's a move in the wrong direction to have more guitars on stage. New Order have the fans they do because of the electronic elements in their music. Any one can rock out but New Order were special because of their blend of acoustic and electronic instruments. Ditch Phil and get a keyboard player or electronic musician to perform the electronic elements live.
