Early JD

Who sings lead vocals on all the pre-Digital Joy Division songs? (Warsaw, No Love Lost, etc.)

That's impossible! It sounds nothing like him.

Shug, i think you are right.... From my knowledge, i think JD only ever had Ian singing...like he'd have stood for anyone else having a go!

That's quite interesting. I've got a song on my pc from Kevin Hewick called Haystack. According to the site where I got it from the musicians are NO. Can anyone give me some more backgroundinfo on this recording?

The reason that Curtis sounds like Alan Ball on helium in all the early JD recordings, then sounds like a slow lugubrious slow thing on the later recordings, is that Barney discovered a device called a varispeed and another called a harmoniser, which could be used to change the speed and pitch of the vocals. Curtis still squawked like Emlyn Hughes when he sang, but it went through this device and came out all deep and resonant. You'll notice the change in key to a few early songs when they were performed after this change, also the relegation of the guitar to rhythm parts and the promotion of the bass to a more melodic "lead" role. Fuck me, I should have asked Morris Fan for his opinions before telling you the truth !

I prefer to think his voice got better as time progressed. To think otherwise would shatter my little world...

Yeah, from the get-go Ian (Mr C) was the upfront spokesman. It's funny how Barney just picked him b/c he was a friend, and Ian turned out to be the perfect choice.

Kevin Hewick was a beginning his musical career when Curtis died. He had been sending home made tapes of his songs to record labels, in the hope of a big break. Tony Wilson had received one of these tapes and had already given him some support slots with JD, released his single "Ophelia's Drinking Song" and icluded some tracks (including "Haystack") on a Factory compilation LP. He decided to try him out (along with Simon Topping of ACR) as a potential replacement lead singer.

I found a brief biography of Hewick, in which he says:

"I suppose this is the greatest of the...er..."Kevin Hewick myths" that is actually true... my first ever recording session was with Hook, Morris and Sumner a month after Ian Curtis's death. Totally unrehearsed, and with me in awe of the former Joy Divisioners (I overheard Peter Hook tell the engineer they'd decided on the name New Order the night before. When I pointed out that Ron Asheton, ex of the Stooges, had already used that name for a band I was told "That doesn't matter, nobody's ever heard of them !!!), the session wasn't a great success. To top it all "producer" Martin Hannett walked in several hours late (straight from an all night John Cooper Clarke session), said "It sounds like Fairport convention" and then immediately lay down on the floor and fell asleep under the mixing desk. Yes, I was out of my depth alright..."

As we know, neither Hewick or Topping made it into the band. Kevin Hewick is still writing and recording today.

........and Ron Ashetons band was called THE New Order.
