I'm not kidding Mick, I can assure you that there was a reminder of what to say between the songs on the teleprompter.
Not the full things, but notes to remember to say that joke here and there...
You have to remember, NYC was filmed, so maybe that was only for NYC... Bernard is a perfectionnist and might wanted everything to be perfect so he put himself notes to be sure he don't forget.

My post was a laugh to the Photoshop image (which of fookin course I never believed) and a comment to Nic's post (which I half believed).

In all fairness to Bernard, he's got to get up in front of a crowd and "entertain" them for the entire set.
I'm a law student, which sometimes entails speaking to an audience (judges). I prepare notes with bulleted talking points to remind me of the points I want to make. If I didn't do that, I'd forget half the stuff I want to say.
(On the other hand, considering Bernard and I are the same age, maybe it is age... )
That's all the "notes" on the autocue are doing-- reminding Bernard of where they are in the set, what he wants to say, etc.
As for the lyrics...

Perhaps the first "Whoop" was born when Barney hurt his foot onstage for the first time (back in 1980something). He saw that people liked it and didn't recognize that it was a scream in pain - so he adapted it for future gigs...

The first whoops where indeed born in the early days, but they were quite different from the euphoric whoops of today. Back at the time they were furious "whoooooooooop!"s, but also "whoooooaaargh!"s and other variations, they can be heard in many early live performances (EGG, In A Lonely Place, many others) and were a mix of post punk attitude, loads of drugs, frustration, loads of alcohol, confrontational blank stares and much more loads of drugs. I loved the proto-whoops... then they gradually evolved with the music of the band, into these contemporary whoops. I still like them. A "barking" extreme variation of the whoop ("whoof whoof") can be seen on the brand new DVD release by LTM, Umbrellas In The Sun, where we have New Order's best performance ever, Everything's Gone Green at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. Available at http://www.sisterray.co.uk, just ordered mine. Hey, maybe we should start a "Whoopology" forum from which develop a "Whoopology" section of the site... ;)

At the NY show, as I was singing along, I found myself whooping at random points where I found it appropriate. At times, Barney and I ended up whooping at the same time! Whoop!

Liking your analysis...I always thought the whoop was an alternative/industrial/post-punk satire on 80s Thatcherism, but perhaps I am talking out of my arse
