Rock the Shack Redux

Ok. So we have established that it is ok for Sumner to dance around like an idiot, since it is endearing and fun. And what matters is that they are having a good time, so we should be having a good time.

And, thus, I return to my 2001 argument that Rock the Shack is a fine song, cause it was clearly them having a blast in the studio, having a fun time recording a rocker....

At the time, I was castigated, for having the poor taste to even mention Rock the Shack... and I was told pretty much "it isn't fair for them to be having a good time at our the cd buying public's expense" - and that a crappy song RUINS their entire history...

Well, I am trying to reconcile how I was wrong then, and I am wrong now?

On the one hand, back then, I thought it was cool they were having a fun time in the studio, releasing RtS... back then I learned from you all and am told to take them more seriously, that they are a SERIOUS band and shouldn't put such crap on their lps, so I join the nool serious fan club and bitch about how silly Bernard looks dancing, and I get in trouble...

Surely the point, for you, is what YOU think about it. I'm genuinely happy to hear that you like Rock the Shack.

Does the fact that other people have told you that they don't like it diminish your enjoyment of it, make you enjoy it more or do you like it just the same?

barney's dancing is bad, but entertaining. rock the shack is just bad. it's like the difference between the rocky horror picture show and bob guccione's caligula.

There is this strange theme going on lately, where people are assuming that hardcore fans base their opinions on the opinions of others... which is odd to me. New Order fans, if anything, are independently minded and spirited...

so, no, my question is not STEEPED in a reliance on your opinion, but is rather CURIOUS about where other fans stand on things...

I like Rock the Shack, always have. I find it fun and lighthearted in the same way as Sumner's dancing.

I guess, I am trying to point out the hypocrisy of some people more than anything....

Jetstream and the idea behind it sucks above all else,and certainly more than Barneys Tom foolery,in busting his dance moves.He is clearly larking around,as is his right here in Britain where our grandads fought for such priviliges.It is only a civil violation if he gets his cock out,apparantly.

I think I see your point. Do you not see, however, that there is a difference between the statements "Well, I don't like Rock the Shack" and "Last night's television performance was shit... the band have lost all credibility... they should sack the lead singer... they should retire... they've sold out... anyone who likes that record is a moron... I'm never listening to them again..."?

A well-written critisism of any song or performance is as valid as any praise. What I don't find attractive is hysterical negative ranting about everything that the band does.

Of course, the fact that I don't like it must mean, by my own argument, that some other people do. That's fine, and of course they are free to continue. I suspect, as I said earlier, that some people do not realise how negative (and sometimes plain silly) they sound.

i think slow jam is the great rawk song on get ready; an '80s power ballad at its best. i just don't get rock the shack--never have.

it's just a song that you'd play to warm up for a rehearsal... i was in a band that used to play some heavy music, but we'd always throw in some fun jams at our rehearsals to lighten the mood, have some laughs to.... stuff we wouldn't necessarily play live, maybe only for encores...

i always felt new order put that jam (RtS) on getready to show us fans they were having fun now....

but everyone hated that side of them...

and, now, sumner goofs around even more onstage, a further development of the band 'just having a good time' - and yet most folks here now call THAT endearing and ok....

i love to see NO having fun as much as the next person. the whooping is annoying on stage, yes, but the dancing is fine with me. however, i just don't find RTS endearing; i just think it's a crap song. i think it's irritating and one of their worst songs ever. but believe me, you're definitely not the ony RTS supporter on this site! there have been numerous RTS (and slow jam) wars over the years.

i don't understand why disliking rock the shack implies that one doesn't want NO to have fun? i'd love to see them 'have fun' on an album--just with a song that wasn't so awful! if you enjoy it, that's fine. but you'll never get me to enjoy that song, i promise!

Actually thinking about it, Barney's dancing really is great. Yeah, it looks absolutely rediculous, but after watching him doing the walking on the spot move on Ross the other night, I couldn't stop laughing, just great comic value. Not only that, it's the one rule that attracted us to NO, the "coudn't give a fuck" attitude, it's all still there, the basic elements are all there, so shut up and enjoy... and the look of barney's face at the end of it was priceless, just a general feeling of 'we know it was shite but we're still living legends, fuck the lot of yers.'

"Rock the shack" is a very good song. I like it much better then "Working overtime" (which is not crappy either).

I think that Bernard didn´t know what he was doing with Rock the Shack. He told in an recent interview: How could I ever think this was good?´ And he talked about Rock the Shack IMO. Hey now, what are you doing?´

Turn My Way is the worst New Order song of all time, YES, even worse than Three Miles to Go, Three Miles to Go.... The duet is a failure, Sumner sounds horrible. I am actually a fan of Corgan, but he is pathetic on this. And the song is dreck.

Rock the Shack is hilarious. If you can picture them playing it with smiles on their faces, loaded, you get the point of it, it has integrity as a rawk blast...

Jetstream is extremely underrated. It is the cool song to hate for those who are too cool... it takes balls to be honest and admit to loving Jetstream. My balls are HUGE!

I completely agree with you. Shellshock is one of my favorite tracks, although my favorite lines are the chorus. Some of it does have old school hip-hop elements, but not as much as Confusion.

More Rts, More Jetstream, Less Turn My Way, Less I Told You So....

I'm not fond of Turn my way, but it's not their worst. I am a Smashing Pumpkins fan and think that NO didn't use Corgan properly. Quite frankly, I think his guitar solos are better than his voice - listen to SP's Gish and Siamese Dream and Zwan's album if you don't believe me. Over time, Corgan's voice has just become whiny and I don't think of him as much of a singer - especially live.
