Why do critics hate Get Ready so much?

I am fairly new to the boards here but I was listening to Get Ready again the other day and that has to be their best original album since Technique (I would place it up there with Low Life). Is this just a case of people that just like Blue Monday and Bizarre Love triangle critiquing a band they hardly know?

Well there's no N.O. album I really hate.

I think most "critics" have a problem with GR because it has more guitars and less electronic sounds.

I like GR and I think (like I said before somewhere else) that WFTSC is a great evolution of it.

Get Ready ... and that has to be their best original album since Technique

I apparently like all the wrong songs on it...

I love Someone Like You, Run Wild, Vicious Streak, Close Range... and am not into the first 3.... especially not into that crappy one, Turn My Way....

but, I think it a decent album.... just not their best... but better than most albums other bands put out...

Get Ready was steady....with a couple of choice tracks in crystal and Run wild,but a great bassline was lost on the otherwise bad 60mph to my mind..

get ready had great reviews from what i remember (by music critics who get paid for their opinion). they missed a great opportunity to tour the states with that one. but as peter hook says, they don't feel they missed out on anything or something like that cause mass acclaim and cashing in isnt their style.

Actually GR got better reviews when it was released than when WFTSC was released. A lot of people in this forum don't like it though, especially Ally and a few others. Me personally, I don't mind it at all, a few gems on there for sure such as Crystal, 60 Miles an Hour, Turn My Way, Close Range, and a few others. I don't think it's bad at all and was great for a comeback. One thing that tell's me that it wasn't a bad album though is because a mate of mine first heard it and thought it was amazing, considering he's my age and never heard NO before, GR alone made him get into New Order. So it can't be that a bad album.

I like Get Ready a little bit more than WFTSC. They both lack those perfect classic NO tracks with solid hit potential, like Bizarre Love Triangle, Regret, Blue Monday, True Faith, Temptation... And curiously only the first two I've mentioned were really album tracks, and they don't make the albums they were in as my favorite. Considering all the tracks in each album, I think Technique, Get Ready and WFTSC are almost in the same quality level, but Crystal and Round & Round stand out as being closer to those perfect "hittable" NO tracks, so they take a higher place in my personal ranking. The three albums have some of my favorite tracks as a fan: Dream Attack, Primitive Notion and WFTSC, but these ones do not have that much hit potention IMHO though.

Get Ready is Better Than WFTSC i have said this all along, no matter how many times i listen to it. i just cant listen to jetstream and Working Overtime at all! the rest of the album is good and WFTSC, Turn & Guilt Standout for me.

Well, I almost replied to this before reading all of it, cause I was gonna point out that most of the songs you listed were NON album tracks... but you were smartly onto it....

I think it is a good question though, why do New Order not release non-album singles anymore?

Especially considering many of their best songs ARE non-LP singles.... ???

And don't talk to me about record company bullshit, cause whenever I do, you all tell me how NEW ORDER is in charge and not their management and they are still punk, blah blah blah....

So, why no new non-LP singles that rock from New Order??? (brutal and here to stay were movie songs)

Couldn't they put out something this late Summer or Autumn from those unreleased 2006 lp songs... mix it up and put out a hit???

I'm not a critic but Get Ready was very weak in my opinion.

Turn my way and 60 mph stand out but I found Crystal a struggle to be a pop hit Matter of fact I hate that song other than the heeeeyyss - Krafty blows it away in that aspect.... Primitive Notion is like the Dracula's castle of that album.

Rock the shack and Working overtime are probably the worst sounding tracks they've ever done.

And yes i do miss the synth pop shit that Gillian brought to the group.

Get Ready was a classic, best thing New Order had done since Technique, and far better (and more consistent) than Waiting For The Sirens' Call (which is also good, however).

Get Ready got very good reviews at the time of release, but it has somehow suited the music press to talk about the 'poorly received' Get Ready, for some strange reason. Those people that say it sounded "too Joy Division" are talking nonsense, and have obviously never listened to Unknown Pleasures.

The reviews were great when it came out, but I guess some journalists were calling it a dodgy album to highlight how much they like the new one. NME were a good example, talking it up when it came out, but saying no one liked it when they mention it now.

As much as there is little point in always following fashion, Get Ready was New Order's freshest, and most contemporary sounding album at the time of release - it surprised a number of casual and long-time fans for it's guitar-heavy tracks. Don't forget though - it did have synths on there too!

I think because, like others have said or alluded to, there are few synthesizer based dance tracks. Someone Like You is probably the closest one you get. Vicious Streak and 60 Miles An Hour are throwbacks to the old NO days; Primitive Notion a throwback to the old JD days. Close Range similar to something you'd perhaps find on Twisted Tenderness. I really like Close Range, by the way, and not sure why many dislike it so much. Crystal is the standout track that is head and shoulders above the rest. Turn My Way was underrated and I agree with previous posters who harped on about how it should have been released as a single back in 2001. I think North America would've received it well. Slow Jam and Rock the Shack were the real clangers, especially the latter. It's cringeworthy and not as good as Working Overtime with all its warts and all, but still, with that said, I could listen to that over a lot of the bubble gum pop on the radio nowadays (read: Hollaback Girl). Run Wild was an interesting track. Nice to see an acoustic number I suppose, especially as the closer. I just have to be in a certain mood to listen to this stripped down song. Touching lyrics, but I don't think they are about Steve and Gillian's child - it seems more like a lovers' song.

The b-sides were exceptionally good. I'm disappointed there won't be any for WFTSC as they're holding them over for the forthcoming album. I just don't find their remixes all that interesting anymore. Get Ready featured some of the worst remixes to date, save Sly & Robbie and the rest of that RIAD mixing tripe that sounds exactly the same.

I, too, wish there was at least another synthier track on there such as Here To Stay would've went well, but alas it wasn't meant to be. It's a really good album after an eight year hiatus. I think we should at least give them credit for that.

It's a good solid album, and in Crystal and Primitive Notion, they've 2 of the best songs they've done. A few too many weak tracks though IMO (SLY, Slow Jam), and not as good as WFTSC.

Feel much the same about it now as I did then really.

i think most american critics loved Get Ready much more than WFTSC... that could explain the confusion here.

Yeah I didn't think it was badly reviewed but when the new album came out it alot of music journalists slagged GR saying this was their best album since technique. I liked the move back to guitars and JD style drumlines.

After Republic, I was concerned it would be another 'pop' album that would come next. I really missed Hooky's bass in Republic and to hear it so much in Get Ready was a treat. There was also a lot more passion in Get Ready than I expected and the live stuff from it (paticularly Crystal) sounded amazing.

i thought critics were pretty nice to Get Ready when it came out, gave it alot of leeway. WFTSC has met a harsher eye

complaints about Get Ready... seem to concentrate on the overly long production that seems to drag some of the songs down, especially on the first half, and the questionable songwriting on the second half... and Bernard's lyrics were some of his most facile/ lightweight/ amateur

Ive said it many times on here before and i will say it again, Get Ready was an outstanding album whereas WFTSC was merely "very good." Get Ready really had this passion on it, just something that grabbed me more then WFTSC has done so far. And not to mention, Crystal is one of the best songs New Order has ever recorded, it has a lot of authority.
