So, while I really miss Gillian being in New Order, I am not gonna bitch about it, she has kids and what not..
But I really wish that when replacing her, New Order had found someone who was electronically savvy and into playing keyboards as she was (well, she was at least into playing the synth, dont know how savvy she was).
I say this because when Gillian was in the group, most of the synth parts were played LIVE. Yes, there was a lot of sequencing, but all of the main melodies were played live by Gillian.
Thats what makes New Order awesome, they way they combined technology and electronics, they way the mixed live drumming, sequencers, guitar, and live synth playing together to create an unmatchable mix.
New Orders use of electronics in a live setting, along with Hookys bass, Steve's drumming ect, is a huge part of what makes them awesome.
So why does Phil piss me off?
Because since he has joined the band, New Order have put a lot of many keybaord melodies and tracks onto the BACKING TRACK so Phil, instead of playing the synth parts he should be playing live, can wank all over the place with his tuneless guitar.
When I saw New order in chicago, I was rally annoyed to see that most of the synth melodies on "Krafty", WFTSC, and Jetstream were on the backing track.
Phils guitar doesnt add much to the group. Instead of playing synth on Regret, he plays the parts on guitar, and it takes away a lot fo the melody.
Matter of fact, in 2001, Close Range and 60 MPH both sounded awful because instead of playing melodies ont he synth, Phil was playing his loud atonal guitar that destroed the melodies of those songs and made them sound like an ordinary rock bands.
Also, in Gillians day, they synth parts were never mimed in concert, she always played them live....
But after watching NO play Krafty and Jetstream on TV, the live performances on Kimmel and Canal, I am pretty sure that Phil mimed his synth parts, and that really pisses me off.
because in the day, those parts would have been played live.
And on stage, it annoys me that Phil pushes his Roland synth off to the side of the stage and barely touches it (except during older songs). because that Roland XP 80 is very much a symbol of how New Order made thier sound, a powerful electronic meoldy combined with traditional instruments.
As weird as this sounds, I actually enjoyed watching Gillian play those synth parts. I liked knowing that the keybaord was an important part of the band. I like watching her play as much as I liekd watching Hooky play bass or Steve drum.
So it really irritates me that Phil is more interested in his useless guitar wankery than playing the synth on most songs, especially that in most New Order songs, its the Synth what carries the main melodies (with Hookys bass). I wanna hear those electro melodies played LIVE, not on a damned backing track.
Thats right, I wanna see Phil play synth more, with the synth facing the crowd directly, as it should.
What do you guys think? And does Phil mime his synth parts on the live versions of the WFTSC songs?
Sorry this rambles, I am a bit drunk.
