I wasn't referring to you specifically :)

I was just stating something general in terms of NOOL these days.

This is such an "American" thread. It's stuff like this that makes me glad the band never visit the site. Over analytical and hugely embarassing to even read never mind contribute to. Hey Spotnick, how can I post under an alias?

Bollocks. One thing about following New Order (or ANY band for that matter, surely?) is that you take the rough with the smooth. For ever Ceremony there's an entire fcuking album called Republic.

Just been grateful we're not Fall fans, that lot blow hotter and colder than New Order could ever hope to attain.

eeh...returning to subject ;) ...I would also like to see (& hear!) more synthlines in NO these days and I don't think Phil could play them the way we want to anyway so he better stick to the guitar (we all know Barney's doing all synthlines in the studio, engineered by good ol' pals, so Phil's not into that at all).

And I do also miss Gillian, even though she did not ever write that much of the synth arrangements (but some) but the way she played them, stylistically, was very good for the band's sound (sometimes a bit sloppy and sometimes very energetic...dynamically brilliant and not as pedantic as Barney probably intended them to be...could that be the reason it's not as crisp on the new album?).

I don't mind the synths to be sequenced live so much, just do it good and make them cut through in the mix. And for God's sake, let Phil do what he does best (guitars that is IMO)!

Just thinking about it now, they could actually bring in Stuart Price on keys for a couple of shows, just doing some basic stuff (not sure if he's that good of a keyboard player or if it's mostly programming with him, though)...at least for J E T and Guilt...that might work.

What me pisses of and makes me extremely nervous is his (Phil) fidgetlike seems-to-be-hyperactive playing style. Looks always as if he wants to slice cucumbers on his guitar. Perhaps he thinks it looks cool...

I'm judging from the TV performances (especially the one from Canal+), I never saw them live myself (that for my defence )...;)

Who cares, the band has got to move forward. Phil is as good as anybody, at least hes from the 'north of england' Regarding synth playing, these days it doesnt require anybody to stand there looking cool. Have a look at Kraftwerk, I doubt whether they even turn up for the gig

I described his guitar play...

I saw Kraftwerk live last year...:bow2: The singer moved his foot in step with the music. And he actually moved his body. (Ms. Sarcasm will not mention now that he didn't do the surfboard and didn't run on spot)...:shades:

I would'nt have thought new order let him in for his boatrace, cos thats no brad pitt lookalike. His guitar work must be flawless, and leaves barney more free with his vocals. But that is no excuse for lying to us in this way,if he really does fake that is :confused2:

Moderator, can you ban this utterly disgusting figure?

What is up with banning? I actually dig this guy, brings a smile to my face everytime I log on... the more characters here at nool, the better. I hate to see anyone leave (like aj wells) and I hate to see anyone get banned... silly...

not very factory records to be advocating censorship etc...

Thanks Tarbox. You are a calm voice in a mass of hytserical outcry...Even tho you may not agree with anything I post,I don't know:shrug: you defended my right to say it.cheers man.

I'd be curious to hear a response to these issues directly from the band...particularly why they CHOOSE to not 'adequately' replace thier former keyboardist for the live shows...

it just seems really odd to me that a band with the level of integrity chooses to use so much prerecorded stuff when performing.

I love this band, and I dont much go to live shows so I dont care THAT much, but nonetheless, I am quite mystified by thier choices.

Just like thier decision to include such light material as Jetstream and Guilt; it's good stuff but has none of the 'dark edges' that we get used to having with this band. Im not complaing, I'm enjoying the music either way....I just wonder why they make these choices....I refuse to believe that thier creativity and integrity had already peaked before this year's output.

Phil is in the band not because anyone in the site asked for. What would make one think they would kick him just for complaining about here?

I'm tired of this complaining threads. I'll have to create one to complain about this.

I completely agree with this. Without Gillian New Order basically suck. I even heard the title track of WFTSC at the bookstore tonight and couldn't help but think what old man wankery it was.

The guys have taken over the band and i guess that means that synthesizers(feminine) are out and guitars(manly) are in.

Running the synths on some tape is disgracefull. Fire the lot of them and replace them with the band from the Crystal video.

Bit arsh...Maybe Wftsc will grow on you with a proper listen.I think The song is beautifully crafted, new ordery as anything, and not at all any kind of wankery, personally.I love it, in fact its ace:D

c'mon... there a bunch of "girlie" songs on the record. "Guilt" and "Jetstream" and "I told you so" and "Dracula's Castle"

... and face it, whether Gilian is in the band or not most of the electronics are going to be preprogrammed, sampled from the records. they (Bernard i assume) wants to sound like the recordings, not like the improve sound of the mid80s... if they let Phil have some fun with his guitar, let him... otherwise it will just sound like Barney karaoke with whoops and rusty vocals

I think backing tracks for most bands are a cop-out, but because NO have always been about incorporating programming with the live mix, I can tolerate it from them. Look, Phil's guitar gives Bernard more room to focus on the vocals. There's nothing wanky about it in the 511 DVD; his 'solos' are by no means flashy.

A question though...

Watching Reading '98 with headphones, it sounds like, and I really hate to say this, that Bernard's got a backing track guitar for 'Regret'. Anyone notice this? It seems like Bernard's a bit self-conscious of the live sound since they've gotten older. They ought not to bother with trying to sound polished live, 'cause when something does go astray, the disparity is that much more obvious.

Guitars were more in the forefront in Joy Division which was great, but I think the songwriting has taken a tumble too. Fair enough to bring Phil along as a replacement, fine again its on guitars not synth, but I was quite shocked to hear he has been helping in the songwriting process. When Gilliam was brought in she was Steves gilrfriend and not really an outsider, I think its ruined the closeness that the band used to have. Still WFTSC and Turn are great songs though.

I don't think anyone should be banned. Total freedom of speech here. However, that doesn't mean I won't let you know if you're getting on my tits by sounding like a broken record player, posting hundreds of times about how much you hate a certain song or thing the band is doing now.

More evidence that Phim mimes his keyboards on the new songs....

I just wathed the J Ross performance of JetStream.

Suddenly, all of those synth parts he played at the Chicago show are magically playing themselves, since Phil is not playing his keybaord on stage at Ross.

I mean, why cant he just play the fucking synth parts on Jetstream live? His guitar doesnt add anything to the song at all, except to take away the melody....

I really miss Gillian and think the band will never be the same without her. But I am happy that the band went on and are still making the best music for my ears in this planet IMHO. So if they enjoyed having Phil as a guitarist (he is nothing more than this), OK! I don't really think they needed to make him a full member of NO, but it was their decision, we have to respect that. But hell, more than having another guitarist they do need a KEYBOARDIST, at least for live performances. No more "full-time" NO member strictly, but someone that really can play the synths. Are we asking too much?
