Why do you call Hokkey's guitar, a Bass?

I don't get it. It sounds like Hookey is playing on an actual string guitar instead of a bass guitar. The tone of the guitar may be a bit lower than the typical tone of what you hear on other guitars, but I don't think it sounds as low as a real bass guiatar. Plus, he plays the damn thing like a regular guitar anyway. I have not heard any guitar sound like Hookey's before in my LIFE! The instrument really sounds like a modified guitar with lower sounding strings or something.

Someone please explain this.

Hokkey usesed a real old guitar that Ian left behind...Hockey took some .6 bass strings to Machu Pichu in South America and had them blessed by Gods. On his bus ride back to Salford, he took 1000 hits of LSD and went on a Vision Quest...when he returned to normal, his trademark bass sound was Second Nature.

seriously though, find the new issue of Bass Player (or whatever it's called). it's got a full run down of his gear, style and technique. worth the cover price indeed.

the sound he gets with his bass is one of the reasons i love new order so much, is unique.

i wouldnt have believed it was a bass unless i saw it with my own eyes. which i finally did this month in NYC. it's a bass, alright!

I thought everybody knew Hooky plays his bass like a lead guitar, that's why he is the best bass player ever.

Because he plays strumming guitar on heavy basstrings, he can get repetitive strain injuri. And when you have that, you have to keep rest. So I am curious if he can play in the Europeon tour. But fans don´t seem to worry, I am the only one it seems.

Why do we call it a bass? Because it is one. Probably the same reason we call the drums the drums, the keyboard the keyboard and the microphone the microphone.

H recently told me PH tunes it higher than normal for a bass.

I read somewhere that Hooky's amplifiers were very bad in the beginning of JD. He had to play high tuned if he wanted to hear anything at all. Ian Curtis told him that this sounded good an so the typical sound was born.

Ive done my share of drugs but i thought 1000 hits of acid would kill you. This seems like it could be a new order created myth. if not, thank god they did drugs.

If you play any bass on the higher strings through a chorus pedal you get a sound similar to Fooky. ;) Anyway Simon Raymonde is a great bassist but is a) not as good as Hooky b) clearly influenced by Hooky

Short answer. Shergold modulator, then Marathon, still uses those. It's a "Baritone Guitar" according to the makers and is tuned +8ve above a guitar.

Just a quick question about the Marathon - what tuning does Hooky use for it? Because your traditional 6-string bass isn't tuned to EADGBE (as far as I can tell), but I've also read that baritone guitars are tuned to B.

Reason for asking is that OLP make a nice looking baritone guitar which is very similar in style to a Marathon, and at £280 it seems like it could be a nice addition to my musical armoury at some stage, but just want to know that I'd be buying something that'd allow me to recreate Hooky's chords, and not have to piss about with altering string gauges, tunings, etc., (ultimately to the detriment of the neck).

I like the look of this - easy enough to retune using the same gauge strings Hooky does. May invest in one!

If you check out Shergold.co.uk Hooky told them the gauges he uses and where he gets his strings wound to order.

Is it a fact that he has repetitive strain injuri? And what do you mean by he plays "strumming guitar"?

Never heard of anyone getting it from playing bass with a pick. He IS egtting too old to use the 6 but, it only comes out when the extra 2 strings are required. Look at 5:1....semi accoustic the whole time, then the 6 for BM and YSF...he takes it off half way thru BM and sits down thru most of YSF. Even the makers say it's not for girls :)
