lol i was actually thinking about this the other day after reading some of the wank on the ross show topic. new order have always been the buffoons of pop/rock,the fact that they aint scared of having fun with it makes them all the better for me.;)

No, they hired Holly Johnson as a stunt double just in case the Pyrotechnics blew up. This was a photo taken while New Order did the real stuff.
Was it true that they did this vid as a piss take and to show their distaste for deff lepeord and that genre in general

The Touched video was MEANT as satire!
some of their current behavior is sadly NOT...
I keep seeing these allusions to the Touched video, as if that is proof that New Order, in the past, also were idiots...

Touched is a JOKE video.... they were having a go at the heavy metal videos of the era....
and it makes me crack up every time I see it...
of COURSE New Order have always been jokesters.... but some recent stuff is sadly NOT tongue in cheek.... some folks are no longer laughing with them, but AT them...
Is it truth that people in the US wanted their money back, because they took the video for real, and thought they were a real metal band?

but apparently some folks (those at the top of this thread) DO think the Touched video is comparable to the Ross show... as if new order was PURPOSELY trying to look silly on the Ross show....
did you read the whole thread Your Holiness? apparently it is not all that obvious to everyone.... 
Tarbox, you're right on the mark. Comparing a parody (TBHOG) to a serious performance (Jetstream/JR show) is ridiculous. New Order's performance on Ross perfectly illustrates their poor live musicianship. It's really fun to be in the arena when they play but watching them on TV/DVD etc or listening to a live bootleg is painful. They are, for the most part, terrible live. They have lost touch with the peripherals of being in a band that they used to hold close: ie. Artwork, singles, promotion. They didn't know what the album looked like until they got to LA. The guys at Warners told them to get Ana to sing on Jetstream and they obviously have no control over what gets released and who gets to remix their tracks. If i'm wrong, i'd love to hear the proof but i fear those things that helped form most of our love for New Order are sadly missing. The creative aspect died with Rob Gretton.
The correct analogy would have been either Blue Monday at TOTP or the BBC sessions in 84.

Rrrrrright, so remind me why Barney looked silly on Jonathan Ross?! Is it because he whooped and danced like a tw&t?! Surely he started whooping and dancing like a tw&t in, what, the mid-to-late eighties?!
And didn't Hooky supposedly threaten to quit New Order for the Stockholm Monsters as far back as 1982 (am sure this is in Johnson's book, if not one of the others) because he was supposedly fuct off with Barney's onstage (mainly drunk) antics way back then.
Thank heavens we didn't have the internet back then else we could probably google 20 years worth of various people's whinging about the band who still won't let it lie.

Well, apparently some of us thickos don't understand a parody when they see one either?! I mean, the comment I originally wrote at the top of the page was that Barney was trying out for a part in Sigue Sigue Sputnick, given the hairstyle he'd adopted at the top (did SSS make it across to the US, I dunno??). Do I need to put a disclaiming footnote: Barney never did, to the best of my knowledge, ever attend an audition to become a band member within Sigue Sigue Sputnick. The photo is indeed an out-take from the Touched video, which apparently, I've now been led to believe, was a parody?! Well, blow me down, and I genuinely thought they'd grown their hair out and were going through their heavy metal phase at that time??! You live. And learn.
Can anybody be certain that Barney's antics on Jonathon Ross were not a piss take. Big Al J is spot on again - NO still have that "couldn't give a fcuk" attitude they always have had, and we love them for it.

Hooky has told this story but it's a joke. The Touched by the Hand of God video was rarely played by MTV here and New Order didn't play live in the States until over a year after this single was released.

Jan, to the best of my knowledge Bernard Sumner has NEVER tried out for Sigue Sigue Sputnick. It was a JOKE! That picture was NEVER taken from a Sigue Sigue Sputnick audtion. It ... simply ... NEVER ... happened (to the best of my knowledge).
Next time I'll start a thread with "And people bitched about Jonathan Ross," but then simply add in the text, "And quite rightly too. Bernard is an absolute disgrace because he can't dance and can't sing and he now looks his age. Ian Curtis would be spinning in his grave." That way we can perhaps keep the miserablists amongst us happy. Well, not happy, per se, because miserablists don't do 'happy'. Perhaps just less miserable instead?

Well yes, they have always taken the piss in some way or other, by refusing to play ball in the early days when asked for interviews, refusing to play the accepted game when it comes to releases, promotion etc, doing everything their own way if they felt like it, and to an extent they are continuing to this day along contrary lines by doing the exact opposite of what they always stood by. But, and this is possibly where some people are missing the ironic point a bit, the current cycle of contrary behaviour (i.e. playing the media game) is actually rather sad, and smacks a bit of desperation. Bernard is acting the goat to overkill proportions these days, and this "pisstaking" is now a bit lame.
