Can we upload Jetstream Mixes?

I took the tracks off of the U-myx program, and spent a great deal isolating the tracks as wave files for use in my Acid software, and it works like a charm:D

I would like to share my mix for the forum. Is that possible?!?!?

That is sort of what I thought. However with more and more mixing technology becoming available to the public, this issue is going to become more and more relevant. Besides, why would the record companies/bands provide such a tool, if they were against publishing mixes (not for profit of course.) especially in the midst of all the .mp3 sharing issues.

Anyway, I applaud NO for this unique opportunity, and if nothing else I will have a couple of unique mixes for my own collection, and for my friends. I hope that more and more singles are supplied with this tool. (I wish I had this for The Killers.) It really is quite ingenius, and simple to transfer over to a real mixing tool.

I dont see why you cant upload mixes created with the UMyx software

Obviously if you started ripping off the samples to make your own tune using other samples and other software then thats a different matter but the U-Myx is designed for people to remix the track within the confines of the CD's limitations.

Actually Acid Loops are royalty-free, so there is no issue there. The issue is with the NO loops. Since I used only these two types of loops, the limitation comes in with the royalty aspects of the NO loops. Since the U-myx "loops" are on the single CD released by the band/label, then everyone who has this tool has purchased it (not downloadable, though I guess it would be possible to copy this part of the CD). It seems as though they might be implicitly trying to promote this sort of thing, IMO.

Correction: Most Acid-loops sold are royalty-free, but that doesn't mean all of them are.

Unless explicity allow it (which I seriously doubt in the Jetstream case), it is as illegal to upload a remix made out of label-supplied samples as it is to upload a remix made out your own ripped samples from the same track. You are simply not allowed to use a sample from someone else's work without asking for permission.

TLV- On point one, I did not want to get in to the All's or Most's, because I know that some loops are not "free", but most are, just wanted to use generalities for the sake of avoiding any arguments, but point well taken.

I totally agree with you on point 2. I was just hoping that, as someone mentioned a while back (before the release), we might be able to share our mixes, potentially creating a "contest". However, with big-wigs like Warner behind this, it might not be likely (Even though they sponsored the "Crystal" contest on acid-planet in '01.) Warner would come out with a statement like "....intended for personal use only. U-myx is not intended for commercial use, and was not meant to be interpreted as such. Blah, blah, blah, bore, bore, bore....

I only wanted to bring this up just to stir up more interest in the tool, and power that it potentially has stored within. (Though I would like to share and be critiqued to improve my skills as well.)

Since I was not tuned into Sony's product back then, does anyone know how that contest came to be. Was NO looking for remixes (they did not use any from the contest on any of their releases??) at the time, or was it purely a promotional gimick?

With u-myx, the deal is that every possible permutation of every audio file on the u-myx programme is still owned outright by the band/label/publisher, but a sort of blind eye is turned to doing more stuff with it- like exporting etc, as long as its all for fun, not for profit making purposes.

If problems emerge i'm sure labels will take a view on letting people export etc so please don't try anything funny...

If you want to upload mixes- you can save your mix as a .umx file (by clicking 'save' on the player, and then upload it to the Jetstream mix competition microsite by clicking on the 'world' button on the player where other people (only those that also have the CD) will be able to download it and play it in their u-myx players.

There's some really good mixes up there already- Conrad's Dub mix is wicked.

This release for Jetstream was actually supposed to be a bit more in depth- with 12 separate tracks but sadly it wouldn't fit on the CD with all those remixes and we had to cut it to 8 tracks....but I'm really glad to see that people have been enjoying it nonetheless.

As for The Killers, we released 'Somebody Told Me' in u-myx format in January this year... looks like you missed it i'm afraid!

If you ask the label, I'm pretty sure they (and their lawyers) will say no. That doesn't mean that they will hunt you down if you post it...

I believe it was still SonicFoundry back then. But it was a promotional thing.

Thanks very much ollyb for dropping in. If anyone around the office asks, the chance to play with u-myx is the only reason I ordered this CD (hey, it's an import!).

I'm guessing the remixes will eventually pop up on the U.S. iTunes store, but I can't wait to :sex: with the isolated parts.

He is u-myx. Well, the inventor at least.

Glad its been well received by most- sorry for anyone that had tech. issues. If you do get these- copying all the files (u-myx.exe, jetstream.umx and microsite.htm) should solve things... (it tends to be slow CD drives that cause the problems)

Its a shame that we couldn't offer more tracks with this one- next time maybe since we've now worked out how to make file sizes about a 10 times smaller, meaning downloading u-myx songs is now an option.

Some really cool new stuff coming up, keep your eyes peeled!
