New Order vs League Of Gents Friday 20 May, 2005
For anyone who witnessed New Order perform on BBC 1's Friday Night with Jonathan Ross last week, it's OK you can take your fingers out of your ears now. The band were, for want of a better word, dreadful but apparently there was a good reason for frontman Bernard Sumner's foghorn-like performance. According to rumours from show insiders, Sumner took an inexplicable dislike to fellow guest Reece Shearsmith from hit comedy The League Of Gentlemen. The story goes that Bernard became so agitated in the green room that he even tried to start a fight with the comedian. Bernard, known for his mood swings, eventually calmed down while The League Of Gentlemen promoted their forthcoming movie with Ross, but their performance of new song Jetstream at the end of the show was anything but plain sailing. Still visibly annoyed, Bernard was said to be less than happy with at least six of his band's stabs at the song and kept the audience waiting for "countless" further attempts. Judging by the final decidedly out-of-tune rendition that went out on air those previous attempts must've been really bad. In fact, even Jonathan Ross was losing his legendary cool by the end, introducing New Order as "that rubbish band" singing a "rubbish" song. Jetstream is out now.
