What does the cover of the Retro CD symbolise? Im curious what an American Eagle and a disco ball have in common. anybody know. By the way, I think its a terrible cover for the box, could of been far better. I like the free booklet though.

Peter Saville says that the eagle is meant to represent Joy Division, the smashed disco ball -- New Order.

The packaging for Retro was pants. The quality of the card was flimsy in the extreme (mine fell apart after one week) In fact every single record/CD sleeve art they have put out since 1994 has been dreadfully uninspired. The last great album (or rather CD) sleeve art for a new Order record was probably the images on the Republic inlay and the singles that came off it - but even there it wasn't exactly the most original of things cos the images were lifted from some colour picture library stockpile anyway weren't they~?

I read the same thing recently as well. Wasn't that in the recent issue of Mojo in the little Seville spread they had?

I rather like the artwork for Retro; its actually my favorite.

I don't know if its been mentioned yet, but does it seem like those bands that are clearly inspired by NO are following suit in their ambiguous album covers? Typically, sleeves for both albums and singles feature the band members themselves. But artists such as Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, The Killers, Jet, Keane, and several others are following the trend of not putting their faces on the cover.

Have you seen the Bloc Party covers. Theyve blatantly copied Joy Division's artwork.

Silent Alarm`s cover is rip of Atmosphere so obvious.Probably Homage and not a rip off.

I always thought it was deliberately cynical; that is, the party's over, the disco ball's been taken down, and the bird of prey has swooped in to pick the carcass for one last compilation.

Yep, "an assemblage of disco balls and a huge carved wooden eagle".
