Oy vey, what a day

Anyone who's ever stood in line for more than an hour for anything can appreciate my exhaustion today, as I stood around for about 90 minutes trying to purchase one textbook. Here's the pain in the ass part: I have to go back tomorrow to get two more because I didn't have enough dough for the other classes. Subsequently, I forgot to check and see what model my DVD player is, so Muffy I'll get back to you on that tomorrow.

Anyways, whilst standing around, I had time to think about what constitutes a good mix tape. I bring this up because I just got finished making one for my own personnal enjoyment. I go by the "never repeat" normally as a rule, but sometimes I'll stick on more than one track by a certain artist (which I violated by putting two Ramones tracks, but no one'll care). Just wondering, for those of you equally obsessed with making tapes, which one(s) you think are the best you've personnally done. It'll be fun.....or maybe not, who knows?

Obviously not - I Love You Suzanne was the 12" (b/w Vicious..must have been short of new material !). Don't actually own any Lloyd Cole at all !

i used to make loads of tapes when i was at uni, havent bothered much since. i used to make em with one of my housemates and our bad taste just shone through, wed pick a theme and then proceed, usually going for the most ott, cheesy, ridiculously melodramatic soft rock anthems imaginable. we even created 2 imaginary american music hacks, moishe gresnick(her) and barry ballister(me) to write the biggest load of pseudo intellectual analytical pretentious piss-take twaddle for our sleeves(yes, we did smoke a great deal of blow). but every once in a while we`d do a proper good tape, though it was hard work cos when it comes to non-cheese are tastes are radically different...i had to allow her some jacksone browne and mc solaar, so i could get some saint etienne or david bowie...

I have this problem, that when I used to make mix tapes, I'd know what was coming up next, and that would spoil it for me.

But trading mix tapes is great, it's a suprise! ;)

I make different mix tapes for various different reasons, like trying to replicate the New Order show that I'd seen (so this thread can stay on topic), or similar-themed songs (money, cities, covers, etc.), and a quite a number where one song will have no relation to the next.

One of the best I've done is titled "You Won't Be Bored", in which every song on the 90-minute tape is under 2 minutes long. It's titled that cause if the listener did not like one song, then the next one would come along very soon. I'm not gonna list every song or artist on that cause there's about 50 on that one. Took me awhile to compile that one, and to remain true to the New Order theme, there is not one NO song on it.

I wish I was a DJ because I'd love to blend Blue Monday and True Faith together as part of a mix, as both songs have a similar 'base' and could blend well with the right Dj'ing. ;)

Would you consider anything from the '90s? Or are you in a remote part of the country that is blissfully trapped in the mid-80s? I could live there...

We have cultivated a culture in a little pocket of Australia. We are stuck in a groove like bad countdown specials with Lief Garrett in them (All in Oz check out Rage repeats on Saturday Night). It is just hard creating a tape that will cater for the occupants normally in my car, One satanistic Metalhead, One little white guy who loves rap, and one guy who answers every question with Bob Dylan. In the end it is only the power of the 80's that can unite these diffracted tribes!!!

But Sheryl Crow has that Janis Joplin folksy thing happening!!!!! I will leave that to the stay at homes. For music that is a bit more modern, check out Australian Musicians like Something fo Kate, Jebadiah, Grand Silent System, the Avalanches, Even, Underground Lovers, Alex Lloyd,The Whitlams and George for some good mix tapes!!!

Think about it, in the 80's sure there was silly fashion and silly music videos, but everyone was happy (well, nearly).

In the 90's everbody got so jaded and depressed and to be honest this "millenium" feels like we are still in the 90's!

The 90's sucked, big time, even creativity was down in the 90's, with hardly anything good being turned out.

In the 70's Heroin made some good songs, in the 80's Cocaine made some good movies, and in the 90's, Coke and Heroin are 'passe', now it's Prozac but it doesn't seem to be helping creativity.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all musicians and movie producers should 'spike up' and 'do lines', nor am I saying the 70's and 80's were only good because of drugs, I'm just saying:

The 90's sucked, 2000+ is the same, bring back the 80's!

I agree with silly fashions (does anyone remember happy pants?) but silly music videos? What about A-ha take on me? MJ with Billy Jean? These were forerunners for the music videos we see today. If anyone has seen Daft Punks new music videos (the Manga Ones) all just ripped off from A-Ha!!! I will gladly retire now!
