The most perfect moment of New Order-yness?

What moments, for you, encapsulate the strange passion that drives us to listen to these people. Little things that explain it all far better than anything. to start off I will offer two of my own, two moments that always make all my hairs stand on end, and create a lump in my throat.

(in no order)

1. In the video for TPK, watch Gillian really closely, as she's doing the front panel mixing at the start (Gillian's front panel mixing in itself is a pretty special thing), JUST as she finishes and is about to turn away, she pauses for about a 1/10 of a second, and just there, just in that split moment, this little look crosses that sweet face of hers, and it just says either "These are my machines, in whom I am well pleased" or maybe it's,( read this as Farmer Hoggat) "That'll do synths, that'll do". Pure New Order Bliss.

2. Any gig where they dander on stage as unconcerned as you like, barney glides up to the mic and mutters summat like "ello we're new order" in a little voice, and the place EXPLODES. that's good, but lots of bands get that, but what makes NO different is that then Hooky's bass says hello with a BDRRRNNRRRRNNN and gets just as large or an even bigger cheer. Magic Moments.

EDIT: If you have the NYC show, put krafty on very loud, and hear what it sounds like when however many people were there (what 15,000 or so from the sound of it) allshout either "FFFUUUUUUUUCK" or just some inarticulate noise as Hooky's bass comes in at the RIGHT level ( ie not the crappy turned down blaspehmy on the studio version)

Steve, this is a lovely post. Unfortunately, your question is a bit like asking what part of oxygen we like.

During "Temptation" at the Taras Shev show, Barney gets shocked by the mic, and Hooky and Steve seem to share a look with each other.

The LWTUA video (technically a "Joy Division-yness" moment, but one of my favorites anyway)

well, see that's what I'm getting at, you cannot possibly describe the joy of breathing fresh clean air, you just have to dump yourself by a waterfall and breathe in, that will explain it all. That's what I'm driving it, the little tiny things you'd play to an alien to make him understand why you're a demented fan of people who clearly can't play or behave in anything approaching an acceptable manner ( to the current somewhat fascist music industry regime).

But yeah, I do need em like I need air. Oddly enough, even tho my GF hates their music she think they are priceless and will happilly laugh her head off with me at 24hpp or any of my documentaries. She even shed a tear watching the NME awards as they launched into LWTUA or BM, when I asked why she said "that noise from the crowd just got me, it was for them and it was for you, they were right to just be the fuckwitts they were all this time. And you were right all those times you claimed they invented everything since the 70's". It's probably the nicest thing she's ever said to me, even if the sarcy wee bitch was having a dig at me about "everything since the 70's" cos I DO like to rant now and then.

My favourite New Order moment is when they decided to keep going after Ian died.

Valid point my friend. Incidentally, I managed to get thru 18/05/05 ok, but a coupla days after, your avatar caught my eye and it just floored me. It's probably the most moving image I ever seen (outside of those involving the human capacity to hurt one another), is actually from a JD photoset or, well, errrr, other.

Hmmm...I noticed the photo. That Carly personage took some smashing photos. Speaking of which, now the long-rumored Plan K footage has been found and screened. It's only a matter of time until the JD DVD comes out with everything.

Apparently the footage is decent quality. Part of it is that slow-motion footage at the beginning of HATYM. A few other tracks from the Apollo shows on HATYM have come out also, as has the Granada TV performance of SLC.

Seeing the video for 'Regret' 3 years after I first heard the song and having it be exactly like I pictured it would be in my head! I knew right then that NO would be my favorite band for life.

R+R from reading(?) 93, where Hooky's bass obliterates everything, such a unique bassline on that track, even bu PH's standards.

Vanishing Point - The bit at the start, and then the way the song changes at around 50 seconds, then at the end - Barney's vaguely religious lyrics, the synth, Hooky's base line, Steves Drums, the the outro.

Just typifies New Order for me, in one track.

I have to agree. Just when we've begaun to think that they are beginning to behave like a "professional" band, they show us that they can still frag it up.

It's true, when the laughing and cringing was over I was left with a feeling akin to that of a proud parent :)

Taras gig, when Barney gets shocked, not the look and hands up in the air as he was all pissed off, rather, how he tapped the mike afterwards and then grabbed it and belted out the next versse of the Temptation as if he was saying "Hey fucker, that hurt, but you cannot keep me down, bitch."

TPK on the Montreaux Jazz festival. It's simply perfect - Barney sings well, there's a good balance, the bass can be heard.

Here to Stay - when I saw 24HrPP in the theater, I waited for the credits to begin. As soon as this song kicked in, I just stood in the theater listening to it as everyone left. The friend I saw the movie with just left me standing there, but it was worth it.

Have to confess a wee lump in me throat at that same point. I think it's Barney singing "we're here to stay" while Hooky decimates the bass.....tis a bold statement.

Unless I was completely mistaken and spent five minutes laughing at a bit part actor, after the death of Curtis, Steve Morris is the saftey pinned punk that comes up to AHW outside a club asking for an audition 'look, I can do the dance..' It was a shame they didn't show Hookys reaction to this part in the free disc.
