Much as I am counting down the days until Hyde Park's performance, I am pretty sure the set list will include BLT, BM, Temptation, Regret, True Faith, Atmosphere, Love Will Tear Us Apart etc. But I must have seen these tonnes!

The band must know that the fans that go and see the concerts are hardcore fans and prefer the stuff that's not been released. I would love to see them play:

Vanishing Point Dream Attack Elegia 586 Confusion In a Lonely Place

To name a few.

How do we get this message across?!

Perhaps a gun pointing to Barney's head will help :evil4: .

i think it useless to try, they willplay what they want to , although the word is they are throwing some of the Oldies back in the set for europe(TLU, Lonesome tonight, EGG, and could it be this is the year that Age of Consent Finally Returns to the Lineup?

As said Tim, the idea of bringing back oldies was taken off this board apparently...

So we do have an influence... but you have to understand that a part of the audience go to the concert to hear their greatest hits too!

Since it looks like we won't see TPK return this year, let's hope they take note and bring it back for the inevitable tours that will accompany the next album.

That said, I'd love to see In A Lonely Place this year. Can't be that hard, can it?

Something about the use of both a teleprompter and backing tapes suggests that spontaneous requests may not be honored.

If you hack into the teleprompter and switch the backing tapes maybe you can get what you want :P

Tbh I'd be happy enough if you just hacked the tardoprompter to bits and let good ole tourette's syndrome barney back out of the box.

Not liking the concept of prerecorded backing material, not very New Order is it. Keep machines live I say, now that Orbital are no more, who else is there ( apart from the chemicals) to force sand to sing live[1]

[1]When arguing with some folkies once, they were giving me grief about how unnatural electronic music was, and kept rambling about wooden instruments and gut strings......eventually my brain came to my rescue(oddly at roughly the same time as my temper broke......amazing what happens whaen you hand a man a gun at the exact moment he needs it) and I pointed out that I made music with nothing more "fake" than rocks and sand, that these items were older and more natural than anything they played and that nothing had to get chopped down or have it's insides ripped out to enable it. I know I am digressing purely to boast, but as argument winning ( or at least opponent frazzling) tactics go I'm rather proud of it.

Don't waste your time writing the name of your favourite song on a huge England flag. That trick doesn't work anymore.

They need both types of their music, the hits and the not as well known stuff. The thing that got me with Finsbury was there were songs like Digital being played, me personally couldn't care about that and would much rather see the band play Let's Go instrumental or original vocal version. I think a live version of Confusion would be good, similar to the one that done in 98, point is, most people don't want a lot of the songs that are playing and it just seems so much better if they played songs like TPK, TLU etc... OF course though, songs like BLT, TF have always got to be in there really, even if you're sick of em.

We've all been spoiled rotten but early New Order you see.

With most bands you can look at a 70 date world tour and see virtually the same set every night, that's just how it is. BUT we have had our minds warped by the special thing that is New Order and now somehow we expect more and better of them. Sadly their asses are owned now, they are product, trailed out on tour to promote the album they recorded to pay the rent. But as long as thy fall around, shout cunt ( especially in public in the US, where it has much more impact) a lot and occasionally chuck out a tune worthy of their true genius, I'm content enough.

As for the set, there should be the predictables for the walk in clueless (BM, TF LWTUA etc) and a wider repetoire from which to draw the rest of the set. That way fools don't leave complaining they didn't know any songs, and fans get the sort of surprises that they'll remember forever (imagine your standin at glasto and Procession comes outta nowhere, assuming that moron can ovoid stating the obvious before hand....I think I prefered him when he ONLY spke to insult the audience.)

Elegia and IALP in one gig? Pass me the rope. That would kill off any neutrals in the audience for a start and lets face it, they're not doing this for the enjoyment of playing live otherwise we'd have a string of dates in intimate venues. They're in this for the money now and they can't sell Hyde Park under their own steam so they are having everything organised for them by festivals. Those festivals will expect a 'greatest hits' package to appeal to as wide an audience as possible and thats what we're stuck with.

Much as I would like to see a few different tracks, I would equally like to see them kill off BM, BLT and TF but if you're looking for them to play something different then that 'different' surely has to be realistic, require little programming and not much rehearsal?

Old Monkey suggested giving them his own personal MIDI files which no doubt have a fair chunk of the older stuff with them in a similar thread to this one. If it transpires that they took him up on the offer, I'd be hoping that they reward him with a few backstage passes, a healthy percentage of the rider at such events & mucho credit in the tour programs.

of course it's not been the inavailability of midi files that has prevented them doing the older material. even if they don't have access to any of their own old material in computer form. for a start they don't need midi files to play age of consent, lonesome tonight, run, leave me alone, procession etc just enthusiasm, rehearsal time and the confidence that the punters are going to give them an appreciative return on their musical investment. secondly many of the midi files have existed in fairly complete form on the internet for a good time now. TPK, confusion, vanishing point for example. however, the time saved programming these tracks would only have to be re-spent by the band finessing and updating the material and directly linking them to new order's own kit requirements and then recorded to their hard disk device for gigs. unless of course they just fancied using the general midi sounds through the xp80 - and for novelty value alone, that would be worth the £45 entrance to hyde park for me. I tend to think we're the vocal minority here...so perhaps it's only fair that if johnny punter pays the (top dollar) ticket price they get the bag of hits they expect. those who believe the setlist is out of date and feel that the band should drop a fair chunk of their most successful (ie popular) songs could perhaps follow the shareholders united approach and boycott gigs and merchandise until New Order revise it. unfortunately they don't play every week so it's us that would miss out. in the mean-time...I'm still feeling the sense I should be grateful for the opportunity of seeing the band on my home soil once or twice every 5 years or so

I know that this is part comedyDMB stock answer and part communal dream scenario. I too would like to see them do Hurt and material with the same sense (of snow). but would seeing their modern interpretations using those 'backing tracks' and with the fat dancing and autocue actually be as enjoyable as our memories of New Order in their pomp? I don't see how (barring the judicious use of a time machine) they could ever recreate the spirit of tracks like this and 586 - let alone the frenzy or gay abandon. it's not a judgement or a loaded question : would you rather see less spectacular versions of cherished material than (reasonably) honed versions of the core setlist? only being given the one option doesn't make the choice any easier for me.

It amuses and upsets me in equal measure, that when musica gear was all stroppy and insane plenty of people were willing to have a crack at it live. Over the years the equipment has become perfectly reliable (with the exception of PC based systems obviously, but New Order have money and can read and write, they bought macs), and yet fewer and fewer people have made ANY attempt to use it. And now we have finally reached the point where New Order charge ticket money for a live gig, and then, in part, mime to tape ( call it HD if you like, it's tape in another form).

I mean if I go and see the Orb, I KNOW i'm going to see guys with a 24track HD, some fx, some decks and not a lot else. But New order are a BAND, not glorified DJ's And one COULD very eaily argue that the likes of the Orb are superior since they actually utilize the HD machine as an instrument. New order on the other hand, simply press play.

Sorry to rant, but I feel very strongly about this. New Order's attitude towards live performace is a large part of what made me pay more attention to them than other bands.....no miming, no silly "hey let's rock and roll" shite, and no lightshow/dancing/pyros.

The point of all that is that there is nothing whatsoever preventing them from firing up the ARP and DR%) and doing EGG or Hurt, except that they are pussies, and they are on a major label, and such labels do not tolerate unpredictable music, and reccordings with (GASP) circuit hum (DA DA DAAAAAAAA) on them. ARSE TO IT!!!!!!!!!

yep, might be a bit early in the bank holiday weekend for a rant, but I agree. it's about a change in attitude - as to be expected considering external and internal influences. it can't be a technological or musical restriction. if we (re: order) a bunch of amatuer/hobbyist musicians with full time jobs and families who get to rehearse once a week at most using a live set up of eclectic sequences and outboard gear and with a fraction of the budget and time of New Order can get these songs to a performable and appreciable state. albeit "a little bit shaky" (hooky) they are true and more live than any of the HD stuff. then it can only be because they choose not to do that material and do it that way. which means that it's the hardest thing to resolve if they don't want to play these songs anymore, and the easiest if they do.

I think the explanation is simple. They are some of laziest fuckers ever. Thats what makes them new order, they dont give a fuck, and dont take themselves seriously.

*You'll be delighted to know I have all those songs on bootlegs. One is called Technique and features TWO of those songs! But I have the others as well. I can record these songs for you. Technique is very rare, you know, all unreleased stuff. 50 quid and it's yours.

I think it's a referrence to the "play ceremony" campaign??

As for not wanting to play, I was gonna mention that.

Anthony H. ( that's H for cunt) Wilson, once said that what made JD different was that they were not on the stage cos they wanted to be rock stars, they were up there because this music was inside them and HAD to get out.

And right there is the simple truth, they don't NEED to let anything out anymore ( except hooky, who it seems just adores playing live), there's nothing left to let out, not much angst in a song about what legal is doing to your far east territory revenue. They play now to get some cash to live on for when they can play no more, it's all become work to them. I do not begrudge them it, they have brought me years of pleasure, and continue to do so, even if their modern selves are not QUITE so morally superior as their ancient versions. When they were making the best music in the world ( they still are I suppose, it's just world standards have dropped :) ), they were broke. BM was soaring and they earned less than a brickie. Fair play to them if they stock the coffers now that a bunch of kids think they are something new.

Just so long as they remain a little but new order and always make the rest of their vacuous and disgusting industry very very nervous.....they're OK with me.

BUT NO MORE FUCKING MIMING.

I can see it now..... "play Hurt or Barney gets it" and the rest of them looking innocent and saying.. "well we'd like to but we forgot it, bye Bernard"

This is where the arguement breaks down though, isn't it?! None of the six you've listed make it into my personal favourites and if I had to ask for six tracks which they ain't been playing live for a while, but which I'd want back, I'd go for -

Sunrise Age of Consent Dreams Never End Face Up Perfect Kiss ... and then I'd really like the ORIGINAL version of BLT back, please.

They're just trying to please the masses, aren't they?!

The only way you could influence NO to modify their playlist is to whip out your dick and tell Barney: "Hey, here it is for your pleasure, mate. Now play Rock the Shack!"

*I don't remember a "Play Ceremony" campaign, though I do remember English flags with "Ceremony" written, but I thought it was for the mailing list... I think theyn still enjoy playing live, though of course it's not as special as when they got back together in 1998. Back then I can guarantee they were enjoying it 100%, but the last time I saw them in 2002 they were still happy, it's just that they have a more conventional behaviour... but we've got always the whoops! :thumb:
