Played this today for the first time in years.What a forgotten classic.The keyboard/Hooky starting at 1.26 and the finale starting at 2.50 are just simply genius.

This is the song that realy got me into NO after mearly liking BM and Confusion, has to be the best NO tune for me, if I had an MP3 player that could only play one tune, this would be it, I could listen to it forever,

definitely in my top three NO songs of all time....

the lyrics (all two verses) are quintessential NO.... I play this in my head sometimes to get to sleep

Totally underrated. Remember getting Thieves when it came out, putting it on the turntable, thinking that's OK, flipping over to Lonesome and playing it a dozen times on the bounce. Coming just after splitting up with my then girlfriend, it seemed that NO's timing was just flawless. A beautiful track which always reminds me of her...

Lonesome Tonight is on the set list for the Upcoming UK gigs aswell as AOC says Hooky :D This will really Blow the roof off,if the venues had roofs...these power tunes are making a long overdue return

Yeah, I never liked Thieves - the lyrics were so cringing & the tune is nothing special, I always found it to be a NEWorder embarasment; But, Lonesome Tonight is pure class - another of those typical moments where, if they had just flipped the record over & had it as the 'A' side - NO would have been so much bigger IMO

Almost the same reaction I had, though I played Lonesome first by mistake, and then played that several times in a row before I got to Thieves.

So, you're saying that Lonesome Tonight's actually going to be resurrected in the upcoming concerts???

I'll believe it, when I see it (or read about it after the fact).

But, if it's true, then - for me at least - that show would probably be their best since at least Republic.

For real man,for real A guy called Kamar who posts on here, did his maiden interview with hooky.And Hooky sussed Kamar was a Rookie early on and they chatted away after hooky put the lad(who was starstruck to be fair)at ease.Anyway,at one point Hooky said these words"We are going to dust off Lonesome Tonight,age of Consent and I can't remember the other one,for THE UK SHOWS"so he did Nice one eh

whoa. as much as I love Lonesome Tonight, DO NOT be hatin Thieves Like Us... they are two quite different tunes, but both are brilliant.... can't imagine cringing to Thieves... but then again I heard it first in 84 when it came out, so maybe it has dated? It is quintessential IQ POP. and good too....

by the way, it would have been great if they had done a locked groove at the end of the Lonesome Tonight vinyl, so you could just keep it repeating endlessly.... that ending riff is magnificent, regal, the best hooky.....

Thieves and Lonesome It does'nt get much better than this

Probably the best bona fide B-side of them all I reckon. It's class! For all the reasons everyone else has mentioned here....and then some. Perhaps the True Faith / 1963 coupling has been way too over-commercial/over-familiar in hindsight, but three years before we had arguably the finest one of them all: This song and it's slightly inferior (due to the lyrics) A-side....both tracks feature brilliant intros. The instrumental version of Thieves that is on the Murder 12" is totally boss though: for the way it starts - Barney sweetly intoning "come in!" as the track starts up - as if inviting us in to share their intimate moment of transcendence.....

What is undeniable is that New Order - when they were still their awkward surly selves - were capable of moments of pure sporadic brilliance like this, and yet when you fast forward 20 years and witness their middle aged contentment coming up with mostly mediocre retreads that don't seem to have much musical merit, you long for the days when they could just do stuff that seems so effortless.

well, you know, I am starting to realize it WAS 'effortless' in a way. For a variety of reasons.

I actually think they are overthinking the music these days. I wish they would just put out some 2 song cd with a couple mixes to make it 4 tracks total... just go in and hit record some weekend and kick it out.

I really worry Sumner is killing the new order mystique with his overconcern and overlording of the fine tuning...

He needs to remember his roots...
