I think Geldof is doing the right thing, as far as trying to so something to relieve the poverty in Africa.

But that lineup at Live 8 is crap. It will probably sell millions.

I agree that Geldof is right - people here are missing the point of this one, which is to show the G8 people that we aren't happy with the way that they are (not) dealing with the third world (political, mainly) problems. These concerts are FREE - they are not looking for our money, they want our suppourt for an ideal - they have mine!

& I'd love to see NO play at one of these 5 similtaneous concerts - actually, if they were to play at all 5 - & be their usual dodgy live selves at all 5 - then I would love it!! If you could put the Pernod (etc.) into the mix - imagine how they would sound by the 5th concert:dead:

Geldof is the one missing the point. Debt relief, foreign aid, and "awareness" will amount to jack shit as long as the tribal "Big Man" system is in place throughout Africa. But A-ha will get some good press and Robert Mugabe will likely get a couple more Mercedes out of the deal and Africa will be as #$(#*ed as it was 20 years ago.

I'm part of the way with Gnu on this one, shouting at G8 ain't going to make a difference, the problems are more systemic. I still think more money will be generated for bands than Africa in the long term - shame on Muse and Kaiser Chiefs for involving themselves in this - expect their profile to rocket internationally.

I noticed GetOff has managed to get himself on the bill again - expect another Bullshit Rats greatest hits soon then.

Requiring the poorest of the poor to continue to continue to cope with the outrageous debt payments isn't going to solve the dictatorship problem... More likely, the crushing poverty will keep the dictators in power. Be honest here; if you've paid any attention at all to what Geldof's been doing, you know that he's had his run-ins with an African tinpot or two. It's intellectually dishonest to characterize Geldof as being as naive as you paint him.

Nevertheless, Geldof and Bono both recognize the role the G8 nations play in the downward spiral of Africa; whether or not Geldof et al. can do anything about Mugabe, Kabila, and the rest, there is something they can do to influence G8 economic policies towards Africa. Unless somebody's got a better idea, and is actually getting up off their ass and doing something about their better idea, I say hats off to Geldof and Bono for putting as much energy as they do into it.

Yes, a decent hairdo would certainly be a step in the right direction towards alleviating poverty in Africa. By the way, along those lines, you'll be happy to know that the Spice Girls are reforming for Live 8.

AFAIK it is true -& I applaud Geldof for his stance. Whatever you say about the man, he hasn't given up. 20 years ago he was promoting Live Aid, now people are saying 'here we go again' - but Geldof (& others incl. Bono) has been working on the same problem for ALL THAT TIME. He's not doing this for self-promotion (although some of the bands will be), he's actually trying to do some good - unlike the rest of us.

The bands on the Hyde Park line-up aren't that bad (then again, I'm a Cure fan), but the list for Philadelphia, my home town, is pretty dull. Heck, even the Killers are playing in the UK rather than over here.
