Alright, I read that infamous "Joy Division" thread, and I've seen this kind of problems before.

Mainly, this problem is the same that got on the Ceremony mailing list.

Sure, we can't always be on topic, and personally, this is my own opinion, this is not a place where you come to talk about New Order, but to meet other New Order fans.

You might not agree with it, but that's my opinion. So the off-topic is not a problem for me, because I skip a lot of threads that don't interest me.

One solution, if that is a problem, could be to do a "General Chat" forum, where people could chat about off-topic stuff, but the idea of having 2 forums to check might be a pain in the *** and since many people are lazy, they won't check both forums.

So what can be the idea? I have to get opinions about this, because this is the only constructive way we'll make this site better. I sure don't want everything to be a mess and sure hope it will get only better!

I sure hope we'll put all thsi behind us and go forward!

Let me know! And if you have to tell me something in private, do not hesitate to email me (if you don't like everyone to read your comment!)

Thanks for the reassuring words, Nicolas. I guess you've checked the "Webmasters read this" thread...

cant u have different folder icons - one for off-topics and one for neworder related topics? so at a glance we can see which ones are n'order related?

problem lies when a neworder topic goes off at a tangent.. then its really the responsibility of the poster to drag the people who want to keep the offtopic rolling into a new topic and allow the original neworder topic to run its merry course.

this make sense?

That's an idea.. when someone post a topic he could click a checkbox "New Order related" or not...

But then again, some people will not check those boxes I'm sure ;)

Nicolas, being off-topic is not remotely the problem. The problem is lack of consideration for others.

Good idea , but usually NOrelated topics often turn into off-topics after a few posts! This is a very difficult topic, isn't it!!

I think the problem lies with the fact that sometimes threads start out serious enough and turn silly (or the reverse, though that's rare). Like Patrick I don't see this as a problem. The lack of consdieration shown by certain unnamed posters towards others is the problem, and unfortunatly I can't think of a solution other than a word of warning to think about what you're gonna say before you say it. I try to keep my personnal details personnal and just come here to have fun, but if I chose to open up I would hope for support. Then again, you don't want to go around muzzling people who don't agree with you, so it's really a question of how to maintain peace without infringing on onliners' rights.

Patrick. I agree that on or off topic is not the reason of the problems that have come up the last weeks. After all, the two biggest uproars were in one on-topic and one off-topic thread. The nice thing about this forum is that it is a good mix between serious and less serious stuff, and also the fact that it is just the right ‘size’; it is not too small, so there is always something interesting to read (on NO but also other topics). And it’s not too big; so you can read everything if you want to. This is one of the reasons I come here nearly every day. Basically what I am saying is that the lay out should not be changed IMO, keep it as it is, and hopefully there will be a bit more tolerance.

I agree.

Off-topic Shmoff-topic. You have to go off-topic to deal with a topic. Seems to me 99% of the people that come on this ship are bonafide New Order and/or JD through and through. I find the restriction imposed mentally about going off-topic frustrating. You wouldn't ask Barney to keep off particular subjects when composing lyrics would you? (probably).

Let's just Leave it Alone and get on with things ... unless there is a possibility of a dedicated chat centre for light snacks.

I absolutely love talking about Joy Division and New Order, but you gotta admit, after a while you need a little laugh or so. If we just posted whenever we wanted to discuss JD/NO, this place would see a lot less traffic.

fucking right.

Life's too short to get hung up on whether something's "on topic" or "off". It's really the call of the poster who made the initial query/suggestion/whatever, and anytime my threads have gone off topic I've never felt offended or hurt. Maybe we should check our egos at the door before we try to interact with others, that's all I'm about baby! :guitar: :guitar: :D

However, I would respectfully request, if someone wants to start a thread about football, please label it clearly and don't introduce anything not about football.

I think if a thread is announced as being off-topic from the norm (ie the Monty Python thread) then that's okay, but it's hard to tell when a thread will start going off from the original intent.

I think the forum is fine as it is. As Nic The Blanc says, this is a place to meet fellow JD/NO fans and going 'off topic' is not a problem for most of us. All the stupidity of the last couple of weeks will settle down and fade away soon enough and i'm sure we'll ALL be good cyber buddies again and have a laugh about this sometime in the future.

Good to see you back to normal Huntsy baby. Did you get your 9 posts as 'mini you' added to your tally?

Patsy, snail me your addy again please, don't forget you were nominated to carry out the Brotherhood listening test. It's time to get it on!

Trevor...

if I'm posting in the thread...you can almost be assured that it's about to go off topic...I have this slight problem with paying attention...I think if I was a school aged one right now, they would diagnose me as ADD and load me up with chemicals...

Glad to see things are back to normal, and Nicolas thanks for bringing your views onto the Forum. Sorry to bring it back up , but what was up with yur partner in crime in the first place?

As regards the off topics - how could each member bring their own personality to the forum if we limited it to talking about only things NO? Sure occasionally it is irritating when threads go off on a tangent when the topic is of no interest to you (ie Paddy/Football, me/Monty Python, and dare I say it, light snacks), but if that is the case then click on anotherthread and have your say there

Those are all good arguments. Of course it's not fun when people write silly stuff in your topic.. so one thing I can do is give a status of "topic moderator" to the person who started a topic, and allow this person to delete messages in this topic..

But in some way, this might be too much..

Yeah, I'm not sure it would be such a good idea, Nicolas.

Imagine if some begin to delete posts that don't share their view.

Well, I know most of us would never do this but you can't trust every one.

Leave it as it is Nic. The only problems have been when people have purposely tried to wind others up - at which point everyone else gangs up on them anyway The only reason to ban someone should be if the'yre being really offensive, which inmy mind, no one has as yet

I think the number of replies and the joy brought to the world by my monty python thread shows that off topic is often a good thing.

And Thanks to the webmasters for a great web site!!

Off-topic: I like traffic lights too, and I know the red ones gives great buying opportunities :-)

Bye!

And the people here I would love to meet.....etc..no no I would not make a list yet again, finally realizing I should not ever try to net-communicate...the lust for socializing with folks with common interest in music via a computer... O.K. - I may have been offended here once by one or two, but as long as revenge leads to nothing than hostilities...., but anyway I still love Peter H's Revenge, but I guess that's just a bit nostalgic :)

Leave it as it is Nicolas. The site is busy anyway which indicates how popular it is. OK, it's primarily a NO site but it would get a wee bit tedious and quiet without any off-topic posts.

Unfortunately, I don't get to post as much as I would like but it sure is entertaining catching up on all the banter!

Dunno, if anybody uses the Football Rivals messageboards but they're a pretty good example of how to mix on and off topic messages. In true Blue Peter style, here's one I prepared earlier. Check this link out for Hibs fans talking about New Order!

ps - In no way are Hibs my team. The very opposite in fact. I give you this link for purely educational purposes.

Play "Behave yourself" by the Astronauts :-)

From a distance: Anyway, Me, I might think I know where it went wrong - I kept nagging about permission all the time, then you have so much respect that you lack courage for doing the slightest thing, that might can be offensive to the other
