I always thought it would be fun to have a font that would give you the PCL code colour in place of the letter. If only I was clever enough to create it...

*Sorry, that should say 'Saville inspired'

Interesting, OB.

I tried to enter something into their colour code but ..

.. it was all yellow.

Don't panic, everything's not lost. If you're having trouble, maybe you need a scientist.

I'm off to get back in my place.

I wouldn't call it a ripoff per se, but it is pretty darn cool.

It is not like Saville was the pioneer in using coded messages in the artwork for bands?

I like the generator!

It's very handy that S, U and X are all working. It lets me create my own Coldplay message indeed.

Coldplay doesn't suck...sorry to tell you...They have quite a huge following...can't say that about NewOrder nowadays...

oh lord. hitler had a huge following too. doesnt make him good. while i respect the fact that you like coldplay, i can only hope that isn't your only argument against the fact that they do, indeed, suck.

Agreed; that gets my vote too. Nice one, DC!

P.S. Remember, Rob, just because a band has a huge following, it doesn't mean they're actually any good.

Here's the official explanation of the colour code, courtesy of NME. And yes, Saville gets a mention.

Am I alone in saying that I'm sure I have seen a similar looking album cover colour scheme, (as opposed to actual design concept - lest people start being pedantic) a few years back from Simple Minds?:skeptic:

As well as the colour code, the font on the Coldplay album seems identical to that used on the Ceremony 12".

But Coldplay have always used that font for their logo across their previous albums - it's called FRIZ QUADRATA I believe.

Anyway - back to the colour scheme. I've found that Simple Minds album I was talking about courtesy of Google.

Squint your eyes at their sleeve so that all you see are blurred colours and then imagine the Coldplay one turned 90 degrees clockwise onto its side, and you have an uncanny likeness....

Interesting, eh????

Oh yeah!! Fancy forgetting that one! That's THREE covers that must have been inspired in one way or another by each other.

So, let's see, New Order get ripped off by Simple Minds who in turn get ripped off by Coldplay trying to rip off New Order. It turns full circle then! Thank god The Cure don't figure in this menage a trois otherwise it could get very messy indeed.:evil4:

Your logic is bullshit...Coldplay is sincerely talented and they are all truly good musicians. Martin is a fantastic piano player/guitarist/vocalist....

The "Hitler" analogy is bullshit...please don't compare an awesome band with a man that killed millions of jews otherwise you'll get a bagel shoved up your ass next time you mention that comparison.

Quality, not quantity.

try this one then.

macdonalds is the most popular food in the world, more people eat it than any other food. springbok is my favourite meat. not many people eat it.

tell me, is macdonalds better tasting than springbok?

quality over quantity. more fans/ sales etc does not equate to a better/more exciting/ innovative group.

the "hitler" analogy was just that--an analogy. i wasnt comparing the killing of jews to a band. that's stupid, and bullshit logic is, of course, what i was after. hitler had a popular following and he was bad. coldplay has a popular following. surely is does not necessarily follow that they are good because of it. you think of a better analogy. (if i had said stalin you wouldn't be so uppity about it, but somehow, that high horse isn't so high...) and if one cannot mention hitler without getting one's head torn off, we're not much better off. there are people out there who refuse to believe the holocaust ever happened, and that's no way to make sure it never happens again. in fact, hey, it's happening right now. and it's not because people talk about it. it's because they don't. if you want to have a go at sticking a bagel up my ass, be my guest, but put some cream cheese on it. i really don't think coldplay is worth the reaction, but i do like cream cheese.

When I heard about this it caused me to have a sudden rush of blood to the head. Initially I thought what the fX&Yk kind of Saville rip off is this!? But slowly I calmed down and realised how nice it is to have a PCL decoder; I eventually got so happy that I needed parachutes to come down safely.

Please. I suppose you never saw that interview with Barney where he said they were fans of Iggy so they wanted to write something that sounded like 'The Passenger.' A quote from him in this same interview is, "if you can't be original, you can be good' (something close to that, I'd have to dig the tape out).

WFTSC breaks no new ground and is still a fantastic record, same with Coldplay's X&Y. IMO, of course.

And for crying out loud, not everything is a damn ripoff. As a professional graphic designer and hobbyist musician, I would want my album covers to have a similar asthetic to Mr. Saville's NO covers. Not because I'm trying to rip off the style, but because those are the covers that I had the strongest reaction to and love to look at.
