Great news : New Order still makes new fans

I was just browsing the Belgian section of the fan club profiles and I was amazed to see a 20 year girl, member since last october and who's a fan since she heard... 'Crystal'.

I find it quite refreshing and I'm wondering if there's others like her (she's called Lélène).

And I think it's nice to see New Order don't only appeal to the old fans or with the old songs.

I beleive that is the natural way people become fans of certain bands that are established. Its always great following a band from their seminal beginning through to the end but with most people you hear a song, get the record and then find out, shit these guys have done all this material before this album, you check it out, bang your a fan! With NO there is so much material there that if someone takes the time to listen they will surely find something they like, love or will obsess about for the rest of their lives!

I've been trying to get a friend of mine into NO for years by getting her to listen to their old stuff but I couldn't do it. She didn't mind some songs but didn't like them overall. She had one listen to Get Ready, bought the CD the next day and now is going to the NO concert with me.

I am a relatively new NO fan.

See, I had heard their popular songs throughout the late 80's and whatnot but never knew who they were.

When I bought the 1st trainspotting soundtrack I got to hear Temptation and loved it, but when "Crystal" came along, I snapped up the single and got real interested.

I bought my first NO album today, Substance 2 CD set, I must say I like it very much, and a few songs I had heard before and never knew they were NO.

So that's my story. ;)

Thats similar to how I got into NO.

I walked into a music store in 1992 and they played BLT, Shellshock and True Faith. I loved these songs in the 80's but never new NO sang all three. I bought the album (substance), loved it then bought "the best of" which came out the year after then republic and eventually the rest of the albums plus videos plus a book. Then I discovered JD and am I the process of buying all their albums.

Holy shit, your first NO album was Substance too? Wow.

Yeah I was thinking ... hmm, do I buy "The Best of" or "2 CD Substance"?

I chose Substance thinking it was basically "The best of" minus Regret etc etc, and then found out "True Faith" is the original version.

It's ok though, I like the mellow True Faith alot also, I've only listened to disc 1 so far.

Oh and Ahmad, I really have to recommend Trainspotting vols 1 & 2, great great CD's with good songs from Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, etc etc. ;)

DISC TWO is even BETTER im not surprsed NO are still getting new fans i myself was brought up in a household that listend to NO and The Cure etc so i guess i was lucky

as far as them getting new fans it is no shock JD are bigger than ever with all the covers floating around by the likes of Smashing Pumpkins and Orgy people are of course wanting to hear the origianl and it has stuck

I think Crystal is brillant and am very happy with the Get Ready album and in Australia triple J are playing most of the album very reguraly and with the BDO tour apon us i can only see them

You know, substance is indeed one of the best ways to get to know New Order perfectly. This CD is quite a legend.

Actually it was my very first CD I ever bought (I did not even own a CD player at that time).

And regarding getting to know the Order... it's all about quality.

New Order makes such good music (as we all know) and they are not a product of a record company or of some producers who want to earn money in a short period of time.

And you know, quality will always be recognised.

For example, good friends of mine have a lot of children (some 7), to many of who I introduced music when they were in age between 11-18, and they really appreciated it.

The second-youngest son had his 19th birthday last year on 24 August, the first day that Get Ready was available in Holland. So I bought him this CD and he was super-super enthousiastic. So you see, if people have the opportunity to get to know NO music....

although i had heard and liked some of their material before Substance, it wasnt until one of my friends lent me substance when it first came out that i realised that they werent just "another band i thought were quite good" i was especially impressed by the b-sides and thought damn... if a band can make b-sides that are this good then i gotta start expanding my collection! and so a NewOrder fan was born!

I know people that got into NO from Regret, Through their side projects, even World In Motion!!! it doesnt matter when in their history you pick them up, its the fact that you have uncovered & appreciate their sustainable quality that counts :)

I got into them in 1994 when i heard the remix of true faith and recognised it from my brothers LP collection. I bought 'best of' and nicked my brothers substance video, confusion 12", thieves 12" and blue monday 12". I didn't realise how many of the songs they had done like world in motion until i got best of. Took me ages to work out who joy division were too... :)

It took me a while to appreciate the B side (although I loved Procession and 1963 immediatey). I think it was mainly due to the A side being so brilliant (I couldn't stop listening to it). But now I think songs like Mesh, Lonesome Tonight, Hurt, Shame of the Nation and the instumentals are great too.

Substance was the first album I bought on CD too, although I had recently bought a CD player.

I think Substance instead of the 'Best Of' would be the best albuum to get people into NO. Not only does it contain most of their best songs, but the best versions of these songs, unlike the 'Best Of'

Im 18 and have been a new order fan since 98. The way i found out about new order was from a compilation cd i bought called The Big 80s, the Big Movies. It featured 80s music from 80s movies such as dont you forget about me from the breakfast club, oh yeah from ferris buellers day off (the reason i bought the disk) and bizzare love triangle from married to the mob. I remember thinking nothing much of this song at first but then i grew to really like it. i then went to the store to find some more cds by new order and the only one they had was the best of new order (I live in the US) so i bought that, then substance, then found technique and republic in used bins... and now they are my favorite group.

I agree with that. Substance is definately the best disk for value for money i believe. You get that excellent collection of singles that covers the early years of NO. Definately not a definative collection but one that will introduce a new person into the faithful. Substance was the first Album iheard back in 1990/91 when i was at my mates place goinf through his older brothers vinyl collection, and low and behold, there was Substance and the 12" True Faith. After a couple of turn on the record player i left humming Bizzare Love Triangle and a changed person!

While we're talking about Substance.... I remember back in 87 when the vinyl was released in Australia but the CD version was delayed by a few weeks perhaps even a few months, I think....Just imagine how anxious I was.....kept asking about the release at my local music store and luckily the chap behind the counter is a NO fan...and he told me there were problems in the CD plant with Substance....A pparently, at that time in the '80s, it was one of the few discs that were over 70 minutes in length...and there were problems, technology-wise. So, it wasn't surprising when you listen to the last track on CD1, True Faith, it sounded muffled with less resolution or quality.

I noticed when Blue Monday was released, I was living in Brisbane, listening to lots of 4ZZZ radio...but I became a fan when I heard Low-life..that CD was the first CD I bought, out of my current 3000+ collection.

Low-Life is their best album IMO. There are no bad tracks.

I got "Best of" today, and I've heard Regret before, I love this song!

Fuck, NO kicks ass, I've got so many CD's from so many good artists which all bring out many emotions, but NO are so "unique". ;)

You know, I feel really happy reading all these testimonies. Kluster's right about the ability NO has to make new fans every f***ing day, 'cause their music has no equivalent.

I would love to be a NO newbie again, to experience discovering all the great LPs and 12" they've done. :)

totally agree with you, Pitch. I've got the same feeling with my favorite books, films...

So do I. When I listened to Substance for the first time, all those songs seemed very strange to me: very long songs without a real chorus, based on a bass line rather than on the guitar, very special way of playing the guitar... now this magic has desappeared, it's become part of my daily life.

I would like New Order not to be my favourite band, but to become again this band that astonished me so much and that I learned to appreciate.

Yes, i'm one of those parents. Whenever they hear my stereo outloud they always ask: is that new order, daddy? Yes, my love , that is new order. And they also dance to it!!! The best has yet to come: i finally succeeded(?) in getting my brother a new order fan!Hurrah!! Took him to both Cologne gigs last year, and he is converted!!!! And,this might be of interest for Marco Pleil, he phoned me last night to tell me he had spotted a CD with only Arthur Baker productions on it!! Buy it, i screamed. And he did. Hope to recieve it tomorrow. You see , this world ain't so bad as it sometimes looks!

I played the Crystal single for my little sis a while back and she didn't much care for it, but when I played the first disc of Substance I was able to make her admit NO were pretty good. She also likes LWTUA, if only because she finds it amusing when Ian groans "again". Oh well, I'm working on it...
